James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen, the biggest quake on the planet is where
the Juan de Fuco and Pacific plates are pushing on one another.
The Pacific plate is driving the Juan de Fuco plate under the North
American plate, under the Cascade Mountain Range, or Volcanic Range.
This is a dangerous situation that we've been keeping our eye on.
I want to show you the swarm that we're talking about here.
See, the biggest quake on Earth right now
is right there on that plate tectonic boundary.
We're going to zoom in and take a look here.
Looks like we have three quakes here.
These are seamounts, which are undercover volcanoes,
and there are quite a few in this area.
So it looks like we only have three.
We have a 5-5 right next to that, a 3-9, and a 3-4,
All centered around where the Pacific Plate is pushing the Juan
de Fuco Plate here under the North American Plate here,
forcing magma to the surface of the Cascades here.
This is Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams,
Mount Hood, and then the Seven Sisters work their way down.
Here's a great artist's rendition
of exactly what we're talking about here.
the Pacific Plate out here, the Juan
de Fuco Plate here being pushed under the North American Plate,
which is this North American Plate here,
and forcing the magma, as you can see here,
to the surface of the Cascade Volcanoes,
including Mount Rainier National Park.
Can't be any easier to see.
That's the mechanism that everyone's worried about.
Now, we'll zoom in here, but we might
be seeing a few more earthquakes in this area.
This is volcanoesandearthquakes.com instead of the USGS.
I'll try to zoom in there and see what we have.
Looks like we still have our three and maybe two additional quakes
where the Juan de Fuco, North American, and Pacific plate meet here.
so we have our 5.5 our 3.9 our 3.4 and then we have a 2.9
and a 2.3 here let's go with our 5.5
here looks like they have a 5.5 looks like Germany's backing that up
and the Europeans
are backing that up and are they giving it
a depth let's see they're giving it a well a default depth
so they don't know how deep it is.
Let's get some detailed information about this.
All right, a strong 5.5 earthquake
right there off the coast of Bandon, Oregon.
It looks like we've got that 5.5 main source USGS.
The nearest volcano is that underwater
North Border Ridge volcano.
Probably one of the ones we just pointed out.
It's only generated 20% of one atomic bomb
or about 2,682 tons of TNT.
Regularly we don't follow quakes this small.
It's a very delicate and dangerous area.
And we'll quickly compare earthquake data from the different agencies.
The Australians come in at a 5.5 default depth.
We've got the French coming in at 5.02, give or take 0.33,
which is basically a 5.35.
default depth 10 kilometers we've got the Italians coming
in at a 5.5 and they've got a depth here
8.6 kilometers seems very shallow for where it's
at to me we've got the Europeans coming at a 5.5
default depth and the Germans coming in at a 5.5 default depth
and i believe finally the USGS
a 5.5 default depth we definitely see an uptick
in earthquake activity currently we have two
New Madrid earthquakes that 2.0 there
and a 3.5 even larger right on the New Madrid there
this is a hazard over here that we often see hit we're going
to keep an eye on this area because
obviously there is some movement there
and that is well a dangerous situation so that said folks
please give us a thumbs up please share if you will
and subscribe if you haven't
and remember that anything's possible bizarro world
