James Kaufman, World News Report, today.
Tonight's full moon is a special full moon.
There's a full moon tonight.
It has a special name, the strawberry moon.
Go outside at sunset to see it rising in the southeast.
The name strawberry moon comes from the Native American culture,
especially the Algonquin tribe used it to signal the start of June's
wild strawberry picking season.
It might even have a strawberry-ish color tonight.
This is the full moon closest to the summer solstice.
So, in the northern hemisphere, it will hang low in the sky,
lower than any other full moon of the year.
Because it will be shining through a lot of our atmosphere,
it will give the lunar disk a strong cold amber-orange tint,
especially during the first hour after moonrise.
This is going to happen just at dark.
In addition, the moon illusion will be exaggerated.
Its apparent size will look very large on the horizon.
Tonight, enjoy the strawberry moon.
And tomorrow, go pick some strawberries.
God bless.
Please give us a thumbs up.
And remember that anything is possible in Bizarro Worlds.
