James Kaufman, World News Report Today. A huge, unnamed comet plunged into our sun yesterday, just before the X-Flare, just before yesterday's X-class solar flare. A comet plunged into the sun and disintegrated. NOAA's Core 1 chronograph on GOES-19 recorded the death dive. The comet was a member of the Kreutz family, a large fragment of a comet that broke up long ago. Named after a 19th century German astronomer who studied them in detail, Kreutz sun grazers are fragments from the breakup of a giant comet over 2,000 years ago. Several of these fragments are thought to pass by the sun every day and impact the sun every day. Most are too small to be seen, but occasionally a bigger fragment like this one attracts attention. Did the impact of this comet cause the X-class solar flare to occur just after it hit the sun and broke into pieces?
