And tonight, people here in the valley in North Phoenix,
they're still cleaning up from yesterday's hailstorm.
And a mother and daughter caught in the middle
of it captured the terrifying moments hailstones
were pounding the windshield of their car.
Fox 10's Jacob Luthi spoke with them tonight.
He joins us live now with more. Jacob.
Yeah, and you look, not just them, right?
A lot of people throughout North Phoenix here,
you just see a lot of damage.
You see the cracked windshields,
you see the dented cars, and you see this.
homes with windows boarded up
because of how strong the hail hit these homes and we spoke
to some residents who say this storm
was one like they'd never seen before. Santa Velasquez and her
daughter Alessandra had just returned
from a doctor's appointment Wednesday. I noticed the
big old lump of ice on the floor.
They were waiting for the rain to pass before heading inside
when the storm took a turn.
Both Santa and Alessandra could be heard screaming as golf
ball-sized hail pounded their car,
denting the body and cracking the windshield. And every time
it hit, it just cracked, just cracked really bad.
At times, they feared the glass would shatter.
As I thought it was going to fall down too,
I put my legs up and I was like a little scared, but
yeah, it was definitely scary seeing it just crack all over
and over each time it hit and
just hearing all the thumps.
Across North Phoenix Thursday, the damage was widespread.
All of a sudden, I'm just hearing, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
I thought Jesus was, like, throwing baseballs at us.
Richard Stevenson's car was also pummeled by the hail,
and like his neighbors, he's now dealing with the damage.
Shattered windows, dented cars, and days of repairs ahead.
I thought windows were going to break.
I'm thinking the ceiling was going to fall in.
It was crazy. I ain't never experienced nothing like it.
Sansa says she's grateful they weren't driving when the hail hit.
Repairs lie ahead, but her biggest relief,
she and her daughter are safe this is material like
my mom says you know every negative comes
with the positive so i know there's
a positive i just don't know what it is yet but there is a
positive with these storms also comes some scams
as well if you're looking to get your car repaired
or your house repaired to the Arizona Register
of contractors as to seek referrals from neighbors
or trusted friends. Make sure that you're
also getting several estimates and also making sure
to be extra careful to check the license
of the person that will be coming out and repairing.
And the good news for Santa, she tells me
that this morning she was able to get
her windshield replaced.
