10-year-old boy finds rare 1-of-1 signed Tom Brady card | ChicagoLIVE Prime-Time

This is huge. If you don't know about this, card collecting has really been on the rise lately. So many folks are collecting various types of cards. Now, you might see a lot of folks collecting the Pokemon cards. Those machines are out there all over the place. But still, sporting cards, baseball cards, football cards, NHL cards, you name it, are still in high demand. And there are so many live streams out there of people buying decks of cards, opening them up live, and seeing what they get. Well, there's one young man in our backyard in Libertyville who recently was gifted a pack of cards. He opened it up, and what he pulled from there was an exciting jaw-dropper, to say the least. Let's bring in now my guest this evening, Mike Griffin and his son, Connor. Say hello to the fine folks who are watching Chicago Live Primetime tonight, guys. Hi, guys. How are you? Great to have you two joining me here tonight on the program. So let's talk about this. So I kind of gave the tease a little bit earlier. Connor pulled a very rare card. I don't know if I've heard of this guy before. Tom Brady is the card you came up with, Connor? Yes. Tell me about this. How did this happen? Give me the story. So my dad, he bought me like a jumbo box of football cards. And then we were opening the cards. Then we came across the Tom Brady 1/1 Auto. And then John Trapper. he he left out the best part though JD, what's the best part? we were we were sneaking the rip um as they say while mom and his sisters were out of the house so we had a little bit explaining to do when when they got home nothing wrong with that at all nothing wrong with that so what was the excitement then from mom when everything came back around to this when she heard what happened did she did she believe you guys or She's going, wait a minute, are you pulling on my leg here? Is this some kind of AI thing? We had to explain it to her. We just got into sports cards this year, so it's a little bit of a father-son thing that we've been doing. And I had to tell her, like, a one-of-one is a very rare card. Yeah. And it's potentially collectors out there really look for these things. Yeah, and that's the thing, too. So there's a couple different options that you could have done with this card. You could have easily just tucked it away and said, okay, let's see what happens. but you've decided to do something else with the card, right? Yeah, we put it up for auction, and right now it's about at $8,500. But we're hoping that there's other collectors out there that are interested in Tom Brady cards. We're Chicago fans, so we're hoping that we would build our collection around Caleb and Pete and some of the other local sports cards. Very smart. Matter of fact, I have the web listing right now. I can pull it up here. There's the current live auction of the card. I see 19 bids on it sitting at just over 8K. And there is the card right there on the left, folks, that you can see. This is a one of one. And what that means is there's only one of these cards. It is the one of one. It's got Tom's autograph on there. It's in pristine condition. This is for sure a collector's item for those who are, you know, Patriots fans, Tom Brady fans, you name it. Now, of course, Tom Brady has retired from football. He's actually joined our Fox family as a Fox sports commentator. So you can see him from time to time on Fox Chicago. We hope we see him more during Bears games and things like that. So there's a little bit of a Chicago connection there. So as you say, building out the collection, what are some other things that you're going to do with more cards? Are there certain places you go to, certain packs that you're interested in? How does this all work out? So a place we go to is called Jim and Steve's. it's in it's in Gurney okay um it's like an entire card shop it's got Pokemon it's got football it's got baseball it's got old cards it's got Michael Jordan stuff all the good stuff so did you tell them that you guys found this card and what was their reaction oh they were they were excited about it they uh they were giving us advice on what to do with it next and um and we listened and we talked to a lot of people about what to do with it so um and we ended up with with doing the auction okay now give me for people who don't know because i know you got to explain this to some folks how rare is it's a one of what card we get that but how how unique is it to find a card like this in all the packs and stacks and boxes of trading cards that are out there why i looked it up so um out of this particular set it's called Topps Flagship they made 450 million cards i think this year it was the first year that Topps had it and so each card like there's maybe like three or 400 cards in there um and so out of 450 million there's maybe um each player has its own like one of one and Tom only signs on certain cards and uh there were two Tom Brady one of ones out of 450 million so wow pretty rare i think so i'm just doing this at the top of my head in theory you might have had better odds of winning like a Powerball lottery or something like that than pulling a card like this don't tell him that he's gonna make me go and get him some tickets then after this but my point though is to find a card like this is is not easy it is very rare and to have it happen right here in our backyard in Libertyville is something amazing so it was crazy like he uh i he opened the pack and i was not totally paying attention and he started jumping up and down and said dad it's a one-of-one Brady and i was like what are you talking about oh um So it was pretty cool. I think it was a little bit shocking to us. And we were jumping around like fools, I think, in our living room. So hopefully no one videoed us. There's nothing wrong with that. Connor, I've got to ask you, did you go to school and tell your friends about this? And what was their reaction? Well, it was actually, we had our weekend first. So I shared it with my football teammates. And then at school, we shared it. there and what was their reaction what did they say did they believe you at the beginning they didn't but then they started he he's a little bit some of the kids came up to him on football fields and asked him if he was the kid that pulled the card so oh look at that that's a little bit there's it's word's gotten around town this is why don't you tell them what you're off oh sorry go ahead no you go right ahead what what do you need to tell me well i was going to say why don't you tell them what your halloween costume is going to be i'm going to be a tom brady um card ah look at that it writes itself i love it now i don't know if we can pull any strings i don't think it can happen but wouldn't it be amazing if maybe somehow some way tom reached out i mean i know i know you're bears fans but hey come on if brady was to say hey good pull kid wouldn't that be amazing um well the thing is we actually tried to give the card to him yeah but then he didn't want well if we couldn't totally get it to him so and we tried though we tried to meet him we were hoping that he'd come in town and call a bears game and we'd have a chance to yeah to go to his card shop that he has by wrigley field and um and maybe see him there that would be something amazing you never know there's still potentially time so as we wrap things up here tonight i gotta ask you this so i'm sure this has really kind of lit the fire for doing more card collecting do you think this is going to push you more to buy more cards or dad are you going okay you know we had a budget here we're going to stick to this we will get what we get or are you going you know what let's let's get a couple extra packs just in case well wink wink nudge you know but uh mom mom definitely is asking us to uh to put the the the limits on it so from here and there and especially if we get good grades and we do some good stuff you go uh we'll find a way to reward and open some packs so it's a fun thing to do that i did when i was a kid so i'm glad that he and i uh get a chance to do that what a great father-son bonding thing what a teachable thing in so many ways but how exciting is it though to have something unique and and rare like this so congratulations to you connor that's amazing wishing you the best for the for the auction for the card here and i hope you get a lot of candy dressed up as that card for halloween for sure thanks jd all right guys thank you so much for spending time with us here again mike and connor griffin from libertyville pulling that unique one-of-one tom brady card just some amazing stuff again thank you guys for joining us here tonight
