New details in the deadly shooting of a man
at a vigil in Prince George's County.
The victim's parents speaking out tonight.
Fox 5's Bob Barnard outside the courthouse
in Upper Marlborough with the latest.
This is still an open investigation.
Prince George's County police telling us they
are still looking for information about the shooting.
Now, according to court documents, the suspect
in custody being held without bond is not facing a murder charge
just for being a felon in possession of a firearm
and for firing into a crowd that night
at the vigil now more than two years ago.
Now, the suspect, this is his mugshot.
He's 26-year-old Jamal Speaks, facing first and second degree assault,
reckless endangerment, and other gun charges,
all related to the fatal shooting of Shahid Omar Jr.
Omar was 24 years old.
The shooting happened in the front parking lot
at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro
the night of July 12, 2024.
At the end of a vigil for three of his friends,
former Wise High School football players.
They'd been killed in a high-speed crash the week before.
Now, according to court documents,
a witness has told investigators Speak said he fired his gun that night,
but only into the air because others in the crowd came at him first.
Police say two handguns were used
in the shooting that ended up in Omar's killing.
We spoke to his parents a short time ago.
It's difficult not having that exact murder charge, but him
being charged in general after two and a half years does help.
And every detective that I spoke with,
Jamal Speaks was the only name that was discussed the entire time.
And some days it hits you harder than others
that he's not here. He's no longer here.
he did leave us with two beautiful grandchildren
one is one
and then the other one is five years old
and just seeing themselves
and him or seeing him and them
is a joy but at the same
token you deal with a five year old that
still questions and breaks down
and cries and says I want my daddy back
so how do you deal with that?
Now Jamal Speaks has a criminal history
pleading guilty several years ago to
involuntary manslaughter
the shooting death when he was 19
of his then 18-year-old girlfriend in Fort Washington.
He said it was an accident.
In the new court documents,
detectives say witness testimony and cell phone tracking data
places Speaks at Wise High School the night of that shooting,
helping to make their case.
What the motive is behind the shooting,
why that happened at such a somber occasion,
we just don't know.
A woman who was there was shot and wounded that night.
His parents say Omar was friends with all three
of those classmates for who the vigil was being held.
