Welcome back.
Getting stronger after 40, it is about more than just fitness.
It is about confidence, consistency, and making yourself a priority.
Wellness content creator and fitness enthusiast,
Marquita Lucky, joining us this morning.
And she recently celebrated one year
of training with her fitness coach.
She's sharing more on her journey,
encouraging other women to get started as well.
Marquita, glad to have you here with us.
Thank you.
Talk to us a little bit about what
inspired you with your fitness journey.
And congratulations as well as one year of consistency.
So what has inspired me is taking my health as a priority.
So I've always, you know, been into health and wellness.
And I made a promise to myself that I will commit one year.
I worked two days.
I worked out two days a week consistently for one year.
And that was a promise that I made to myself.
And I said I was not going to give up.
And I was doing this for myself.
So this is self-care for myself.
I love that.
And what have you found in this past year of consistency when it comes
to this and your fitness well-being, your mental well-being overall?
How are you feeling?
I feel great.
Again, it motivates me every day the way,
I mean, I get a lot of compliments.
People are saying, look like you're a fitness trainer.
Yeah, I thought you were.
So it was just that commitment to myself
and just how I feel overall for my mental.
So it wasn't necessarily where I wanted to lose weight, but it
was just a promise that I made to myself that I wanted to stick with.
staying strong over 40 yeah
and that goes a long way for people out there who are uh older than 40
you know sometimes they find themselves whether it's
the day in and day out of the job family
whatever it may be finding excuses to not get into the gym
or whatever the fitness options may be for
them so how do you find routine when it comes to your consistency
so for me again i do two days a
week i literally go to the gym right after work i keep
my gym bag in the car so i don't have no
excuses and I have a schedule
so again I'm working out from 5 30 to 6 30 Wednesday and Friday those
are the days that I work out and so I'm committed
and I'm sticking to that and nothing gets in the
way of that and again this is for me no one else
but for me yeah so yeah I love that uh what about
the motivation right because there's so many times
when you get to the gym or before there you're
like you know what maybe just today I'm gonna skip it
and then that just kind of sometimes
snowballs and accumulates, doesn't it? Yes.
So having a personal trainer has actually helped me
with this journey, guys.
I mean, again, like I said, I have a schedule for 530, 630, Wednesday
and Friday, I'm at the gym and he holds me accountable.
So I've never said, look, I'm going
to be late. I'm not going to make it.
This was something that I made a commitment to myself.
So for anybody that wants to start this journey,
you have to make sure that you're going to be
able to commit yourself to something. Start small.
Start small and just take baby steps. And then
it's okay to start, you know, at the beginning.
And don't compare yourself to other people. And
that's the thing. People compare themselves to other people.
But remember, you're doing this
for yourself. Yeah. What have you found
when it comes to conversations with other people that
you've spoken to, people that are over the age of 40,
about your influence on them and how they've
seen what you're doing and the inspiration that you are?
Well, you know, the stories they say,
like girl you are committed you are doing
this thing like how do you do it and I keep explaining
to them this is for me yeah since COVID
and when the gyms had shut down this was stuff that I was
doing at home you know I had my kettlebell I had
my jump rope I had my sliders and again this was
self-care for myself for the mental
so it starts with the mental first and then the physical
do you find that when you're doing some
of your workouts looking back from a year ago you've seen
that strength and that uh you know commitment
that you've put in yourself and you see the numbers
grow on the scale when it comes to what you know being able
to lift heavier being able to run
longer whatever it may be and that in itself
is a pretty big achievement yes and actually i was
talking with my trainer yesterday
and we did a video where i've actually increased my weight i
was doing i think 26 pounds i couldn't forget it i couldn't believe it
but i had 15 right here so
as you're going through the journey it's going
to increase the progression and you look back and
You're like, wow, I remember I couldn't even lift that.
Or I remember I couldn't even do that exercise.
So, again, you just have to take baby steps.
Don't be hard on yourself.
So that was one big thing is just taking it one day at a time.
Absolutely.
So what do you normally do?
Is it more of a home routine type situation?
So what I do, first I start off with a warm-up.
I do my jump rope.
I may start off when at the gym I'm doing 300 jumps with my warm-up,
but I know for the sake of time we may do 100.
And then I have my sliders and I have my kettlebell.
So different exercises I may do with the kettlebell.
so some of the you know 15 pounds here we might
do some swing throughs you know with this and
this is a 15 pounds so actually it's pretty
light yeah what i'm used to that i may do
the roundabout you know um so making it look easy
i know uh lastly uh where can people follow you
