James Calkman reports on increasing seismic activity in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. A recent 4.9 magnitude offshore earthquake is highlighted as a potential precursor to a much larger \"slip\" of the Juan de Fuca plate under the North American plate, which could trigger catastrophic earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions across the U.S. West Coast.
James Calkman will report today.
This gentleman,
the subduction zone and the cascades are giving us more problems.
We've been seeing more activity there for quite a few months,
and I'm afraid the slip joints are about to slip,
if you know what I mean.
So what do we have?
Most recently, a 4.9 magnitude, which is a big earthquake, come in.
They don't know the depth of it.
It doesn't have a big signature because it is offshore,
but it is right here.
And this is the Juan de Fuca plate that you see here.
It's being pushed under,
pushed under the North American plate here.
And what that does is that makes the magma push to the surface
in all the volcanoes on the west coast of the U.S.
And that's the exact mechanism that we're seeing here.
Most geologists think that the Juan de Fuca plate
is way overdue for a large slip under the North American plate
with so much pressure coming from the Pacific plate out here, okay?
And, well, we're talking about Mount Rainier,
places like Mount Adams, places like Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood.
There are a bunch of volcanoes, even Yellowstone,
that would be affected by a slip of the wonderful plate,
which is this plate right here, under the North American plate.
And they have some what they call slip boundaries.
And again, there's a lot of tension on those.
Geologists are expecting those to go at any moment.
A very quick artist's rendition of what we have going on here.
We have the Pacific Plate out here pushing
on the Juan de Fuca Ridge and Plate here.
It's going to be pushing it under, under the North American Plate here,
i.e. the subduction of the North American Plate,
which will force magma to the surface of the Cascades,
the volcanic range here.
Now, Olympic Mountain is a volcano,
and some of these in the Olympic Mountains are volcanoes,
but all of the Cascades are volcanoes.
As you make it further south, this can actually affect places
as far as Northern California and the Seven Sisters.
I did want to mention that Volcanoes
and Earthquakes.com are picking up two large quakes in that area.
Another one north here, a 2-9 here, a 4-1 here,
and a 4-9 here, which is pretty much big trouble.
So that is being pushed under the North American plate,
which will force that magma to the surface.
This is Yellowstone right here.
This is the Snake River Caldera here.
And these are the Cascades that run all the way into Lake Tahoe.
Volcano Discovery is calling it a major 4.9 magnitude earthquake here.
As you can see, right off the coast of Oregon here.
Not an enormous quake, as you can see here.
Earthquake details, there's no determined depth at 4.9.
It'll be closer to an 8 or 9
or maybe higher if that slip or that slip joint slips.
And it'll be a catastrophe with a tsunami on the west coast
of the U.S. from San Francisco north to Seattle.
Now here you can see that 4.9 and we had actually five actual reports
of this quake, most of them being mild to moderate.
So, again, nothing huge, but definitely
a precursor of what's about to come.
Why do I say about to come?
Because all of the slip joints around the globe are slipping.
The fact that it's on the west coast of the U.S.
and associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone
has nothing to do with all the pressure on the plates around the globe.
There is significant pressure on the plates around the globe.
Always scary when just the USGS is covering this.
A default depth of 10 kilometers of 4.9
and no other agencies are covering this.
Very, very strange.
A quick report before we go.
we just had a 5.0 pop off over during
the report biggest quake on the planet it's at 5.4 right
there going into the USA and to make it easier
for you guys to see wait a little well we won't
be turning the satellite it's
on the New Madrid right here i thought there were two but i just
C1, Tallapoosa, Missouri, on the New Madrid fault line,
fracking, fracking, fracking,
we have two in Yellowstone right here,
these are in the Caldera themselves, a 1.9 and a
1.0, and we'll jump over to the West Coast,
so we've been watching right there, but let's
go into the actual Cascades real
quickly and let's take a look
at Mount St. Helens, Mount St. Helens
and boy Washington they think
that will go off before any others, a 1.5 to 10 kilometers
a 1.1, 1.2 kilometers then off to the side
of point one, very very small, a little
But further to the north, a very small quake,
0.8 north of the caldera there.
So nothing to be worried about at this point.
But at this point, some of the anomaly is out.
That's it. God bless, guys.
