An exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in the suspect's death. No officers were injured.
My name is Chris Battenfield.
I'm the Chief of Police with the Humboldt Police Department.
This is Captain Jack Burt and Lieutenant Mike Nansel.
Just going to go over kind of what happened here today.
At approximately 12 15 p.m.
today,
Humboldt Police Department officers were notified
by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office of a potential theft
suspect believed to be entering the Humboldt City limits.
While searching the area, Humboldt officers located
the vehicle in the parking lot of the Humboldt
Academy Sports and Outdoors, located at 9470 West FM 1960.
That matched the
description provided
by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Officers made
contact with the suspect
and gunfire was exchanged during the encounter. The
suspect sustained gunshot wounds
and was transported to a local area hospital
for treatment. The suspect was subsequently pronounced deceased. No
officers were injured during this incident.
This incident remains in the
early stages of the investigation.
Additional information will be released
as it becomes available.
And as the investigation allows, the Humboldt Police
department will provide updates
to this press release with further details
confirmed and released the suspect.
He is deceased. Yes, I do not know that.
No, sir. I have no idea how many shots were fired.
Like I said, it's I do not
know that at this time.
That's still actively under investigation. There was
no pursuit. No, ma'am.
They found the vehicle based off the description given
to us from the neighboring agency.
Correct. That I am not sure. I do not
know if he ever entered academy or not.
I do not. I have no information on his
identifiers. Um, we would withhold
that anyway until next of kin. It's very
early. So
all I know is we were advised it
was coming in entering the city from the
north. Uh, I'm assuming
the Montgomery County area since Montgomery County
Sheriff's Office is the agency that notified.
I have no idea. Like I said,
it's a fresh scene. We kind of locked it down.
It's being processed right now
through our crime scene unit.
We will have those details probably at a later
time. No, ma'am.
There's no other victims, nobody else involved other
than my two officers
and the deceased that I am not 100% sure. I
think it's too early to say.
We will determine that through the course of
this investigation. So we can't say gunfire.
Well, there was gunfire. That's
a fact. I just can't can't determine,
you know, the first shots, who it was
and the amount fired.
So shot that that I'm not too sure. So we don't know if
it's too late. Gunfire at this point.
I'm not I'm not I'm not able to confirm
that right now.
It looks like that vehicle has
a gunshot hole.
Like I said, I haven't been over there,
but it's part of the crime scene.
Which was the suspect's vehicle? Was it this one?
Suspect vehicle was the pickup truck, the silver Nissan right there.
Correct. That's a patrol unit. Yes.
Yes, ma'am. The officers that were involved in this were in that unit.
Yes, ma'am.
I'm sorry. I can't. Okay, I couldn't tell you right now.
I just I just don't have that information. So yes, sir.
I do not know. I can tell you he's a male.
I don't really know anything other than that.
Like I said, it's been pretty fluid.
It's happened pretty quick. Pretty recent.
Like I said, this all kind of unfolded about 1215 this afternoon.
So I just don't have that information at this time.
So I don't know if we recovered it.
You can rest assured we'll be looking into that.
Right. We're going to get any available camera footage,
any evidence that we can from out here.
That just sometimes takes time.
But now, rest assured, we'll be we'll be looking into that.
So your officer. Yes, ma'am.
They do place on administrative leave.
Correct. Correct. Per our policy,
they'll be put automatically on a three day administrative leave.
That's common practice pending our investigation,
because there's a lot of things we have to to look into.
And we want to make sure that that we've covered all of our bases.
So I have not, no sir,
I have not spoke to them.
I can tell you one is a sergeant, he's got over 20 years experience.
The other is a detective and he's got at least 15 years experience.
So these are tenured officers that were involved.
