We will want to begin in Gwinnett County
with that deputy facing some very serious
allegations this afternoon after a mother claims
that a gun was pointed at her eight-year-old
daughter during a warrant execution.
The mother says deputies were at the wrong home and chased
the frightened child onto her property.
Let's get out to Angelique Proctor following up on
this story live in Gwinnett for us this afternoon.
Angelique. Good afternoon to you, Tom. Yeah,
this Norcross family just traumatized
and really disgusted by what they say happened to them and
really this eight-year-old daughter
and granddaughter of theirs as she was at home
playing in her own front yard.
Now, the deputies did have a warrant for her uncle, it turns out,
but what they say happened to this little girl,
they say, is terribly unacceptable. Now,
According to the Poole and Jones families, the deputies swarmed
their property on Langley Drive in Norcross Monday afternoon about 5:40.
They say they got a few surveillance pictures of the officers
in the aftermath of everything that happened.
Now, the family says the eight-year-old little girl
was playing outside in the front yard
when deputies arrived with that warrant for her uncle.
She immediately started scurrying.
She was frightened and ran, ran,
ran right next door, which is where she lives.
Her grandmother is in one house.
Her mom and dad are in the house next door.
Now, Grandma Amy Poole says she was just looking out of her window
and couldn't believe what she saw.
All of a sudden, I see my granddaughter run,
and I saw an officer chase after her with a loaded weapon.
A loaded weapon.
What was your reaction?
Of course, I sprung from my bed and ran out the front door.
And I'm yelling at him, she's a child. Stop.
What did he say?
He just proceeded.
By then, I saw that he had my son.
And my son, he was like, what are you reaching for?
And my son said, it's a phone. It's a phone in my pocket.
I couldn't believe what I was actually witnessing.
My grandkids are always out here playing.
How does an 8-year-old look like a 31-year-old man?
We are traumatized.
My granddaughter is having nightmares.
I'm having nightmares.
I'm having a hard time sleeping.
What grandmother should have to even witness that?
A loaded gun pointing at a child
that has done absolutely nothing wrong?
She can't even play in her own yard
or her grandmother's yard and feel safe?
She hasn't been outside since.
My daughter came running inside, and she was screaming,
the police are after me, they're chasing me.
And she was crying, she was shaking, she was crying.
Both me and her father were like, what do you mean?
We didn't even give her a chance to
finish, I'm not even going to hold you.
We didn't even give her a chance to explain.
We ran outside to see what she meant and what was going on.
He's like, hey, no, who pointed a gun at my child?
Who did that?
and you know he's asking one by one each
of the deputies that are that are out here and they're
like he's like i didn't do it i didn't i didn't point
a gun at your child okay but somebody did
another deputy did so who did it they didn't want
to answer that question they didn't want to answer
that question they told us that we needed
to calm down how you tell a parent to calm down when you
just chase my eight-year-old with a gun she's eight she's
a little girl she's afraid she's
crying she's scared this is her father
and i'm her mother and behind them behind our kids
we have to advocate for them
so no i'm not going to calm down i'm not yelling at you i'm not cursing
at you we're coming at you we just want answers
these are very very serious allegations we reached
out to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's office to get
their side of this story we have yet to hear back
from them as for this family they say they
are so traumatized the entire family plans to get some
kind of counseling or therapy. Tom?
You can hear the emotion in that family's voice. They
want some answers as to how all of this happened.
Is it too early to talk about any kind of lawsuit
against the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office
or any sort of legal venue for that family for
culpability and, you know, bringing this child into this conflict?
Well, the first thing they
did, Tom, was reported to Internal Affairs.
And so the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office needs to
sort of investigate themselves.
And then we will find out what they come up with.
They certainly have come to the media.
They are not sure about an attorney. Right now,
they say really what they want is for that officer
to be held accountable. They want the
officer to receive some kind of punishment.
They said they even think he should lose his job. So
they're kind of taking it internally right now
and haven't talked yet about hiring an attorney,
but they are very, very upset. You can understand why.
And we're just glad that child is okay this
afternoon. Angelique Proctor, live for us in Gwinnett County.
Angelique, thanks so much.
