So much happening today,
St. Paul City leaders will announce a new plan to address homelessness.
This comes as the city continues to face backlash over
an encampment closure from this past summer.
Our Bill Keller is live in St. Paul with more
on what the city is planning. Bill, good morning.
Good morning. Well, this afternoon, Tom and Kelly,
the St. Paul City Council expected to adopt a resolution
for a new approach to address homelessness in St. Paul.
The three-part plan will reportedly include
a 60-day strategic investment period,
A temporary indoor low barrier shelter.
Now that would operate for six months during the winter.
Then a permanent low barrier shelter based
on the indoor village model would be put in place.
That includes turning warehouses into housing.
Back in August, the city cleared the encampment at Pig's Eye Park,
but officials say really it was unsuccessful.
They tried to help as many as 200 residents find more stable housing,
but they say that many simply moved to other encampments,
including the one on Randolph Avenue,
which has led to a spike in police calls in that area.
The city had a timeline to clear some of the other encampments,
but those plans have since been put on hold.
The city's resolution does not say how much this plan is going to cost,
as St. Paul currently does face a $26 million budget deficit.
But Tom and Kelly, the announcement
is scheduled for 3 o'clock this afternoon,
just before the city council is expected
to adopt that resolution back to you guys right
all right thank you Bill Keller, live for us this morning, thanks Bill
