Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe speakers and guest Billy Mance analyze *You Can See Everything*, a commercially successful A24 documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheimer. The film explores the psyche of Elizabeth Holmes, blending meta-drama with unsettling interviews to portray her delusional confidence and refusal to admit wrongdoing regarding the Theranos fraud.
Yesterday, right after doing the show,
I texted my daughter because I knew she was like doing
business over here on this side of the Mulholland in the valley.
And I said, want to go see a movie
with your old man? And she was like,
you can see everything, the Elizabeth Holmes movie.
And I'm like, absolutely. So we go.
My daughter, Mary, and I went. It was unbelievable. It was
two hours and 54 minutes. Okay. It's a long movie.
Amanda Seyfried did this very weird
interview over the weekend and that now it's becoming clear to me.
Harry, do we have the
interview Amanda Seyfried did with the Hollywood Reporter?
Okay. Roll that in please. How's your
life? It's interesting. Yeah. It's interesting.
It's really hard to do interviews right now.
Yeah. But for a good reason. Like, I don't know.
I think everything that's happening is meant to happen.
Everything, everyone that's in your life is meant to be in your life.
That's just kind of, it's, and I'm here tonight,
and I'm meant to be here, and I get to go home tomorrow,
and I get to go home, and so on and so forth, and then some.
Does it make party conversations difficult?
Only, only of late.
For people who are going to approach you over the next couple
of days, tell them what's the best way to engage.
What's the best way to engage with me?
Talk about besides things you can't talk about
because we know that there's things you can't talk about.
I like to talk about, you know, the emus.
I like to talk about the emus.
And I like to talk about Halloween.
And if you can engage with me if you want
to talk about all things having to do with...
Yeah. Hmm.
Apple pie and, like, olives and...
Bah, bah, bah. Okay.
You know, really good hard ciders.
how's your life interesting uh-huh uh-huh yeah okay i don't want
to look spoiler alert i guess
a little i would never give away the whole thing
but i gotta talk about this and i think i can do
it in a way that it's going to be helpful you know what i have
a wonderful guest he and i will dance
around this together um uh first by the way i thought
that was amanda seyfried you know just
trying to skip around her divorce.
She filed for divorce or separation a month ago.
She and Thomas Sadowski announced
that they're splitting after nine years of marriage. They have
two kids. They said they'd been separated
for a while before going public, so it wasn't really
new to them. We'll always love each other, blah, blah, blah.
But then I realized, having seen
You Can See Everything,
you remember Amanda Seyfried famously in the Hulu series played
elizabeth holmes
the dropout unbelievably great series uh anyway she she gets involved
nathan fielder and lance oppenheimer the directors
um it generated 15 million dollars in sales it's
it's the biggest north american documentary
opening since michael moore's fahrenheit 9 1 9 11
um 15 million it only costs 7 million i think to make
which a24 the production companies become
brilliant at spending little
and making a lot uh their margins are crazy wired magazine described
it as a singularly astonishing film uh
and i will say this amanda seyfried in there is in there for
the a long time she's not just
a little cameo it's art imitating life life becomes art half doc
half reenactment drama i don't know um i
also have a crazy thing to tell you and that is that
billy evans who is the father of elizabeth holmes kids basically
her husband although i don't think
they're married i'm friends with his father
and i didn't realize it we became friends at the Can
film festival years ago in fact my guest right now
who i'm going to welcome at this moment
movie mance scott movie mance who is the greatest
and the greatest film aficionado i've ever known
oh you were you were part of the group that got to see this movie
when it was sprung at the Tell
Telluride film festival was it Telluride Tell
Telluride Billy First of all it's great to
see you my brother i'm so happy to be talking with you
so here's the thing so yes i was part
of that crowd at the Telluride film festival
and the thing that made it so special is this was a
secret screening none of the people
who were sitting in the theater knew what we were going
to see until the director of the festival Julie Huntzinger came
to the microphone at the podium
and said this is the movie you're seeing you can
see everything directed by Lance Oppenheim and
Nathan Fielder like i've been to Telluride 12 times i've
been to Sundance 23 times Toronto 18
times all these film festivals i've never had
an experience like this and of course you know the
movie blew me away and then after the film
the two directors did a Q&A that was moderated by Emma
Stone Emma Stone who worked with Nathan Fielder
on that tv show The Curse but anyway uh i was
blown away by the film a lot of takeaways from this movie
or maybe not starting with the fact
that i was really impressed
that this was not a typical documentary you know what i mean it did not
go back yeah it didn't go back
and rehash everything like a documentary and show old
footage and everything if you're watching
the film it's like if you know you know we're not
going to go back there
and for the first half of the movie you know nathan fielder you know
who was just going to just have uh elizabeth holmes you know talk
to her but he wasn't going
to be on camera but then he he had to put himself in the film
because you know here's a guy with the
rehearsal his tv show the rehearsal
who was like kind of pranking the people that he was interviewing
right who knows he's an odd duck man i mean you
don't know what he's really doing um he has met
his match in elizabeth holmes
because they both are people that linger in a moment a little too
long you know what i mean like yep elizabeth holmes
so when they're just kind of sitting there
i think these are two people
who like a moth to a flame go to an awkward pause
and and and you just like you feel it all over
you it's very odd oh man billy it was awkward
awkward is a word and a half for the feeling
that you get during the duration of this interview now
what people have to know is that the interview
with holmes only takes place for the first half
of the movie right you know
then she goes to serve her her uh you know prison sentence jail yeah at
jail and then for the rest of the film um you know it turns
into something else turns into something
very meta um you know i don't want to spoil it
because you know the movie just opened and there's
a lot of people who haven't seen it yet, well since we don't have access
to her, i think it's okay to
say we get access to someone that can represent
her right, the aforementioned put it together now
there's a couple things i have to, i have
to complain about, okay i don't think it's like
there's some, first of all you need to tell all
your people in the movie world stop making three
hour films, it's too long for people
and i hope your person at Telluride said we have a very
special surprise for you, now go take a leak, everyone go pee right now
because i had to piss
in them, excuse my language, i had to pee
in the middle, i'm a 55 year old man, i don't sit for
three hours ever under any circumstances and i
also have a problem with seeing Billy Evans' penis
and i'm gonna say it right now, i'm sorry that's
a spoiler alert, you need to know you're gonna get
an unnecessary schwanz shot, a schwanz close-up
that nobody wanted and nobody needed and had
nothing to do with the movie, all right Billy, first
of all you're right, the movies are too long
but this film you can see everything, i
was so caught up, wait hang on, i was so caught up in it
and i was so like where is this going, where
is this going, where is this going, that the three
hours to me, okay, and i see a lot of movies
the three hours flew by, it really by because again
you know you're watching this film
and you're getting such an awkward feeling that sustains
itself for so long because you're you're still
not sure during the Elizabeth Holmes part is she
really that like out there where she doesn't see
that she did something wrong she is my takeaway
way okay is that Elizabeth Holmes is cuckoo
for coco puffs you know she's uh not operating with
a full deck here and i still think that she's i still think
that she's in on the joke if you will
because you know Nathan Fielder lived with Billy
and Elizabeth Holmes during the last 44 days
leading up to her incarceration in prison
and like she was on her guard the whole time and then i
didn't even know who Billy Evans was until i saw the movie
and boy did i get more than i bargained
for with him um and he is also
in on this i i mean i didn't think for a minute like when when
when Fielder asks Elizabeth Holmes have you ever lied before
and she goes no i don't think so
i don't believe that for a minute
but i will say that watching this documentary hang on yeah right
with those wide eyes i will say that watching
the film i could a see how Holmes was able to
dupe all those investors
and b she's again she's she's totally off her rocker yeah that's the
question is they get down to this big question about some how
the how they're you know they're
making this documentary and when you make
a documentary it needs to be authentic which
means you need to be clean as a subject
and so they get to this debate in there as uh you know
we're making we're giving you access
to our lives you're going to make a probably a lot of money
off of this she hasn't spoken in nine years you know billy gets
a little business like and is
like how do we participate and she elizabeth pretends
and you don't know whether she knows
and she's leaving it to billy to be good cop bad cop
or does she literally not know and it
becomes your bellwether i guess to figure out it like how
this applied to when she was at
theranos like did she knowingly know or was she
because she still maintains that she did nothing
wrong she maintains the technology
of theranos works yeah um that that was just iteration
1.0 that when 2.0
comes you know we're really
going to see this through they're still in business
they're still trying to do Theranos
yeah yeah they're still trying to do it
I was like are you kidding me just let it go
let it go like like just
do something else open up a restaurant
or open up an ice cream store but
yeah let the whole Theranos thing go
but it was just you know what you
were saying at the top of this conversation before I
jumped on here about 824
this movie was in
production no one knew about it all the people you know
for the four days that i was a tell
your ride before the movie even started we knew
that there was a secret screening we were all
all the other journalists
and all the other critics you know i know all these people who
at Telluride we're all in this little bubble here
and we're all trying to figure out
what's the movie what's the movie
for a little bit we thought it was going to be Digger the Tom
Cruise movie but then we found out it's a Nathan Fielder film
and then it started to turn the conversation
start to turn that it's the Holmes documentary
which i didn't know really anything about until
i got to Telluride boy Digger took
a digger i mean yeah there's nothing worse than when you
actually write a film's fate as the title of the film
but billy billy here's the thing you can see
everything made 15 million dollars in its opening weekend
that is twice what digger opened with
Digger cost about $180 million to make,
and you can see everything costs seven.
Is Nathan Fielder the new Tom Cruise?
Is that even a figure?
That's the question that the old entertainment news shows
that we used to work for would ask.
Yes.
Is Nathan Fielder?
Are you kidding me?
Jesus Christ.
This guy's a very odd duck.
Nathan, I've texted him.
I'm trying to get him on.
He is as odd as they come, but he's perfect for this.
Do you think it's a little self-indulgent,
um well i i you know i thought
that for a minute like what is he doing putting himself
in the film he's in a lot i mean it's really about him
but but i think it works because of
that reason otherwise you don't get much
of her right yeah otherwise you would have just
it just would have been her and billy evans
and that would have been it but you know by putting
himself in the film and then you know
the second half turns into what the second half turns into
something very very meta um and it works
but you know here's a film it's a phenomenon it's the
who would have thought that the must-see movie event
of the year was not the odyssey uh or not
digger but a movie a documentary about elizabeth holmes
and this is a film brace yourself billy
this movie is going to get nominated
for best picture oh yeah best directors maybe uh i mean
Don't say best actor for Nathan Fielder.
They can't.
That's not possible.
Director, though, he is a director.
He and Lance directed it together, so maybe they'll –
and by the way, I think that is – this is novel.
This is – at least, you know, we see everything.
You can see everything.
Yeah, this is new.
This is something you have not – this is an idea.
It's true creativity.
It's wicked genius.
it's swinging for the fences on something
and whether it connects or not i always admire those
who swing for the fence
and this one does connect i mean there's no question they pulled it off
amanda cypher now there's a couple of them there's
the I mean I don't know if Amanda Seyfried like she
she pissed off half of people I would assume
with one political statement about Charlie Kirk which
came out I was like oh my god that's
in the movie why didn't they take that out Amanda Seyfried is
like don't you want people to just she's
a brilliant actress I think and you said any
gorgeous yep she won the Emmy
for playing Elizabeth Holmes she won the Emmy for Holmes
does she win the no she can't play
the Oscar it's it's it's it's too much of a we've already
seen that but boy she does I mean her Holmes
is her her wait a minute Billy I mean I feel like
with the cats out of the bag already
in this conversation here Elizabeth Holmes or rather
sorry Amanda Seyfried see what I did there I mean it's like man
the lines are so blurred
but Billy Amanda Seyfried was better as Elizabeth Holmes
and you can see everything that she was in
the Dropout and she won the time to work
on it yeah she had time to work on it oh how about the
moment when it's okay there's there's
and it's just it's very surreal at times when you have
Elizabeth Holmes so you're watching so and so be you
but watching you be them be you be it gets so
crazy at one moment yeah that it's actually
the brilliance is just is in there anyway this is a
movie that you will go see yeah uh it's two hours
and 54 minutes you guess oh i was coming out you
know who was barreling into the movie theater
um right after me with her husband to go see it
Elizabeth Banks
and her husband celebrity sighting she was buzzing right by i texted
her to see if she'll you know give me her thoughts on it
but you know make sure you
have time for a little shard
or a coffee afterwards with whomever you're going
because it's a talker it's something
to talk about you gotta see it you gotta see it to believe it
it is uh like again billy going back
to Telluride i remember uh you know uh you called me
when i was in my car driving back
to la from telluride i know i drive i know you're in the car
i was in the car and you were asking me about it
because everybody was talking about it
and again you know that screening
and it was completely full there were a lot of people who
did not get in so i was like felt really lucky that i did
but you know here you have all these
seasoned hardened you know jaded press people journalists
and as we're all walking out
we're all like what the heck did i just watch you know
and you know i've seen it again i went over
the you know over the weekend to see the movie again
and so just to wrap my head around it better
and it's uh i'm glad i saw it again
but for everybody watching uh hot mics here with billy
bush you've got to see this movie for yourself
and be part of this conversation you don't want
to miss out you don't want to feel the FOMO like what
are these people talking about true you're
comments down here there's
my you know there's uh karen she says elizabeth holmes tech is
impossible oh she had a question there before
um fire away your questions in the chat section
elizabeth holmes tech is impossible there's
no way you can run all those labs on a drop of blood
from her nano technology she says you absolutely
can she's going right back at it she said there
was nothing wrong i mean her denial
is crazy you're just gonna want to be like wait what
and then she's so good at it she plays innocent
so well you're like is she right no no that's the
thing billy that's the thing i'm watching
my line like she she is a narcissist she is a manipulator
she manipulated all those people who
who bought into her charm and you know she's a she's a uh
great she's a con artist i'm looking at my cat's name is karen
and uh that person wrote she's a con
artist she is a con artist she's one of the best
con artists to to you know of the 21st century
because of the uh all the money that she duped out of investors
and you know even when the thing
wasn't working you know she kept going
with it i mean it's incredible how people just bought into
you know even when it wasn't working she'd say
no george schultz you know jim mattis all these
great big men you know what's funny
is the men men just caved to this young blonde woman with a
deep voice who the white eyes i can't tell
so someone else from paulina buckles 2310 wrote
she's a sociopath uh i i mean a sociopath
and a narcissist i mean they i feel like they kind of
go hand in hand when trying to describe elizabeth
holmes i just you know my opinion my opinion after
watching this movie twice now is that she's off her rocker um but she's
also she's also really
smart and she knows what she's doing
and the question is if people want to believe her then
that just makes her all the smarter i'll say one thing
though for her yeah she has something she's
lost it all she's in jail she's lost everything
but she has something that everybody's searching
for in this life mance and that is what is a beautiful
because it comes around she has love
and this is crazy amanda seyfried plays
a valuable she is the messenger she's carrying
what every woman is going to feel about billy evans they're going
to this guy is disgusting
he's a spangali type of a guy he's got a grip over
her he's crazy he's got power of attorney
over her this is every woman's biggest nightmare
is an over-controlling guy that takes over your
life and bankruptly i mean
and and amanda is really good at communicating that and then in
the end there's a little thing where there's somebody out there
for all of us and these two
are two peas in a pod they have love
in the end billy you're just like well you're right you know
like there really is somebody out there
for everybody there's everyone's got someone out
there just got to find him
or or in between that is absolutely right movie mance right there guys
movie mance.com he's movie mance
that's m-a-n-t-z movie mance across the socials movie mance.com
get into his cabal nobody knows the movies more than him
or he's passionate about him this is a
man doing what he loves in life and his energy
and excitement is contagious and i love you buddy
thank you i love you back brother it's great
to see you thank you for having me on your show and

and by the way i can't wait
for all of that it's going to be exciting all
right buddy thanks for having me see you see
what a beautiful guy we love him um so um yeah
this is this is like the craziest thing i've ever seen
