Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen | Full Length Audiobook | Read by Karen Savage | Chapters 1-61

"Pride and Prejudice" is a novel written by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. It tells the story of the Bennet family, particularly the second eldest daughter, Elizabeth, as she navigates the social norms and expectations of Georgian-era England.
The novel begins with the arrival of a wealthy gentleman, Mr. Bingley, in the Bennet's neighborhood, and his subsequent courtship of Elizabeth's older sister, Jane. Along with Mr. Bingley comes his friend, the proud and aloof Mr. Darcy, who immediately clashes with Elizabeth due to his condescending attitude.
As the story progresses, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's relationship becomes increasingly complicated, with misunderstandings and miscommunications on both sides. Meanwhile, the Bennet family struggles with financial instability and the pressures of marriage and social status.
Throughout the novel, Austen satirizes the societal norms and conventions of her time, particularly the emphasis on wealth and social standing in determining a person's worth. She also explores themes of love, marriage, and individual agency, as Elizabeth fights against the societal expectations placed upon her and seeks to make her own decisions about her life and future.
In the end, after many twists and turns, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy overcome their pride and prejudice towards each other and come together in marriage, while Jane and Mr. Bingley also find happiness together. The novel concludes with a message about the importance of recognizing one's own flaws and prejudices and striving to overcome them in order to find true love and happiness.
Pride and Prejudice is the most famous of Jane Austen’s novels, and its opening is one of the most famous lines in English literature - “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Its manuscript was first written between 1796 and 1797, and was initially called First Impressions, but was never published under that title. Following revisions it was published on 28 January 1813 by the same Mr. Egerton of the Military Library, Whitehall, who had brought out Sense and Sensibility. Like both its predecessor and Northanger Abbey, it was written at Steventon Rectory. (Summary from Wikipedia)
