We found out that this story stinks and we
can say it because we're not passing judgment
on it.
We're actually describing it.
People in the Sheepshead neighborhood
and beyond have for weeks said they smell something
and they're not even sure if it
is sometimes gas, if it's something else.
The owner of this small business here is somebody
that we talked to over here and let's walk over
to where you're going to hear him describe what it is that he found.
Now before we cut away to the next thing,
we want to show you what's behind, below this
grading that he's gonna refer
to and you'll notice a really slick surface on
to it looks like it could be oil
and he said that when people when it either
rains or if any water gets poured onto
it it disturbs it and that's what people
are smelling now having said that let's show you
the map tracker that we have
recorded here this is Brooklyn Gas Tracker and it is a map of South
Brooklyn and shared with us
by the local City Council member Vernikov and let's
show you some of the comments on there as well.
People have been reporting a very strong odor
to moderate odor. A lot of people complaining
that this has been an ongoing issue going back
to September and they're smelling it in all kinds of places,
not just by, you know, streets we're
talking about within their house.
Some smell it in the garage, some smell it in their basement,
some smell it in their bathroom.
Well, as we've dug deeper onto this story tonight,
we have learned that there are multiple agencies
that are investigating this mystery,
which may be emanating from manholes or sewers or both.
The DEP, we are told by the city, is investigating
and that the investigation itself is being led
by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
in coordination with two other agencies,
including the EPA and the FDNY.
They also tell us that this is an ongoing issue,
that they're going to remain in contact with community members
and that the DEP has already taken several actions to inspect
and flush sewers while conducting air sampling.
Speaking of air sampling, National Grid has
a statement that we want to show you.
They say, quote,
Our crews were notified of the odor and investigated,
testing multiple times to ensure there was no gas leak in the area.
All samples came back at zero percent.
If you smell gas or suspect a leak,
leave the area and call 911 or National Grid.
And the number is on there, 718-643-4050.
Now, we talked to people who say they have smelled things
in different parts and they
also have different theories that maybe there
are two things that people are smelling out
here.
Have a listen in.
I didn't see.
I didn't see.
Yeah.
But someone spoiled the gasoline here.
They smelled it and poured it?
Yes.
You see?
And that's what people have been smelling?
Yes.
This is what it's smelling.
If you pour some water in something here, it's more smelling.
Yes.
Yes.
East 22nd and Z.
The potholes.
A lot of gas.
would smell it it's gas 100 percent gas uh my dog would just go there
and then like he will roll on it
because he smells it and when we smell it it's a huge smell avenue z
and east 22nd it's very strong
and then i saw an article they said they don't
know where it's coming from apparently FDNY and
con edison said they don't know if it's um that there's no leaks
but i don't know i smell it
bottom line if you smell something get out
of the area call 9-1-1 and report it
We're live in Sheepshead Bay.
