Alright, now at 10, a deadly shooting
in the subway system in the middle of the day.
A man is shot and killed, and tonight the gunman is still on the run.
Plus, you see Pope Leo here.
He is back at the Vatican ahead of schedule after lung cancer surgery.
We've got how soon he's already planning to be getting back to work.
It might surprise you.
But first, grab that heavy jacket and a hat.
Maybe even look for your gloves.
After days of rain, we have clear skies,
but also have a big drop in temperatures.
Good evening. I'm Arthur Chien.
and welcome to the 10 o'clock news.
It's a classic crisp autumn weekend. Some might say
refreshing and taking a live look outside.
The cold is apparently settling in. How low
is the temperature going to get?
Well, it's already pretty low. Lauren Kreidler is here now
with our first look at the weather. Hey, Lauren.
Hey, Arthur. This is the coldest air of the season
so far. In fact, actually the coldest air since April.
So we are feeling a chill across the
tri-state area. We're talking about 30s
and 40s across our area right now. Newark at 45 degrees,
Belmar 42 degrees, along the Hudson Valley
a little bit cooler there in the 30s. As we look
ahead though, tonight we are having a freeze warning
in effect for a portion of our area
until tomorrow morning.
So keep that in mind as we are heading into tomorrow morning. Those
temperatures going to continue to drop until we're in the upper 20s
and 30s across our area.
Some spots like Central Park staying around 40 degrees,
but for the most part, across the Tri-State area,
Long Island, seeing those temperatures even in the upper 30s.
So your weather headlines for today,
the coolest air since April is on the way.
You're going to feel it in the overnight hours tonight.
If you stepped outside this evening,
you know exactly what I'm talking about there.
We have that freeze warning for our inland locations.
Looking for your Sunday.
Finally, getting a Sunday that is rain-free,
not tracking any rain for this Sunday,
unlike the past Sundays,
about four past Sundays now we've been seeing rainfall.
So, you know, it's going to be nice.
At least we'll see blue skies and sunshine,
though those temperatures are only going
to be in the 50s as we head towards the afternoon hours.
But we are going to be gradually warming up
as we go throughout this week.
So the 60s, they do come back, Arthur.
I'll show you when in my full forecast coming up.
All right, Lauren, thank you very much.
Well, developing tonight, fear on a busy subway platform in Midtown,
a deadly shooting on the E train line,
and police tonight are still searching for the gunman.
Fox 5's Kelly Kennedy is live for us at the scene at 53rd Street
and 7th Avenue with the latest on the manhunt. Good evening, Kelly.
Good evening, Arthur.
Yeah, definitely a very scary situation here in Midtown this afternoon.
Now, as you can see, I'm now standing inside
the subway station on 53rd and 7th Avenue.
When we checked in with you guys at 6,
this was still shut down to the public.
It's since been reopened,
but that does not mean that this investigation is over.
As you mentioned, police are still searching for that suspect.
I do want to show you now some photos of what he looks like.
Take a good look at your screen.
As you can see, he was last seen wearing a red jumpsuit.
He had a black face mask on.
He was also carrying a black backpack.
Now, the NYPD tells us this all started
with an argument between two people on the E-train platform at the 53rd
and 7th Avenue subway station.
Cops telling us that argument then spilled onto the train
and then back onto the platform.
Now, we're told one of those men pulled out a gun
and shot the other man in the chest.
Now, police are still working to figure out whether
those shots were fired on the platform or on the train itself.
We're told that victim was rushed to the hospital,
and he sadly did not make it.
The suspect took off running down 7th Avenue.
Now, we spoke with some people who witnessed this crime,
and they're still shaken up,
and they tell us they're grateful to be alive.
Train came in, the doors opened,
and that's when you heard the pop, pop, pop.
People more or less know what gunshots is here in New York.
And it was like a stampede to leave.
In New York City, I was scared to death,
but, you know, I just started praying.
This was not a random act. Our detectives are the best in the world,
and make no mistake, we will find this person.
Now, despite that horrifying shooting,
you wouldn't even really know anything happened.
It's back to business as usual.
Lots of people moving through this subway train station right now.
Now, as for the victim goes, police have not yet released his name.
They're waiting to notify his family,
but they do tell us they believe he was in his 30s.
Now, again, police looking for any information on this suspect.
if you know anything, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers.
That's the latest now here in Midtown.
Arthur, I'll send it back to you. Kelly, thank you.
Well, tonight, one person is dead. Another
person is injured in stable condition after a fire in Hell's Kitchen.
Citizen video here shows
a scene on 49th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues on the west side.
FDNY crews got there just after
11 this morning. The situation was under control about an hour later.
So far, no word yet on how
that fire started. And a massive fire in Staten Island as well.
Let's show you how intense those
flames got as it tore through a large warehouse
on Highland Boulevard in Pleasant Plains. The FDNY
says they sent dozens of crews to battle the blaze,
nearly 80 fire and EMS units. That accounts
to almost 200 personnel on that response.
Firefighters also face water supply issues
as they work to contain those flames.
So far, the FDNY reports there are no injuries.
Pope Leo back at the Vatican tonight, much sooner than expected.
And this comes only four days after his lung cancer surgery.
And now he's already preparing to resume his duties.
Fox 5's Francis Wang joins us now with the latest on his recovery.
Good evening, Francis.
Hey, good evening, Arthur.
And the Pope appeared to be in good spirits
as he left the hospital earlier today,
waving to well-wishers, even stopping to greet patients.
His surgeon says his recovery has been so remarkable,
the Pope could be fully recovered
from the operation in about 10 more days.
Those words from the 71-year-old pontiff
as he left Rome's Gemelli Hospital today.
He underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove
the lower lobe of his right lung.
This was after doctors discovered early-stage lung cancer.
Now, the Pope had no symptoms,
and the cancer was actually discovered during a routine exam.
His surgeon says the Pope has needed very little medical assistance
and just two days after surgery
was even spotted rearranging chairs in the hospital chapel.
Before leaving, he also met with a 13-year-old
Ukrainian cancer survivor who gave him a homemade doll.
And now attention turns to his upcoming trip to South America.
The Pope is scheduled to visit Uruguay, Peru and Argentina next month,
a demanding journey involving about a dozen flights.
But a surgeon says at this point, there is no medical reason to cancel.
And while the Pope's recovery from surgery is going well so far,
doctors are still waiting on additional test results
to determine whether the Pope will need further treatment.
In the meantime, he's expected to deliver
his traditional Sunday blessing tomorrow from St. Peter's Square.
Arthur.
Thank you very much, Francis.
Well, first responders and military members hitting the ice today
in New Jersey for bragging rights and also for a great cause.
It is the fourth annual Heroes Cup hockey tournament benefiting
the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
The inaugural event had just four teams from the FDNY,
NYPD, and the U.S. Coast Guard,
but now it has grown into a 16-team tournament spanning the East Coast.
Over the past three years, the Heroes Cup has raised nearly half
a million dollars for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
For like a fashion,
taking over the East Village from Knicks superfans to mini Michael
Jacksons.
You will not believe some of these Halloween costumes
and the hundreds of dogs the parade
brought out today.
