First of all, take a look over my shoulder because you can see
this is the front of the Capital One Bank here at 86th
and 2nd Avenue on the Upper East Side.
This is supposed to be glass. It is all now plywood.
That's because somebody at some point this morning stopped here
and just demolished, shattered all of this glass here.
Go ahead, take a look at the video
because we do have some video of what it looked like earlier today.
The NYPD now investigating this as a possible hate crime.
That's because the name of a pro-Palestinian group was spray-painted
on the front of the bank, along with the vandalism.
It was spray-painted in red paint, and the NYPD believing that,
obviously, that the bank was absolutely targeted.
Now, Capital One is part of a banking group
that provides financing to Israel's largest weapons manufacturer.
And then take a look at this video here, because now for the second
time in about two weeks, this video has gone viral again.
This happened in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Vandals using drills to destroy the Omni tap-and-go readers
at the Church Avenue subway station.
We are being told that the Omni readers have been replaced because,
again, this video happened last week.
But here again in this situation,
another political message from the vandals.
They were protesting multiple issues,
one being the affordability issue with commuting costs.
In addition, Omni is operated by a company
that apparently supplies military equipment parts to Israel.
Well, City Council Speaker Julie Menin speaking out about what happened
today here at the bank on the Upper East Side where we are right now.
I also spoke with a retired NYPD detective about
the growing number of anti-Semitic attacks.
Go ahead. Take a listen to what they had to say.
It's completely unacceptable. I mean, this is vandalism.
Now it's being investigated as a hate crime.
The windows were all shattered. It's completely unacceptable
that this is happening in our city. It just has to stop.
The atmosphere is so toxic that we have to understand that this won't
end unless prosecutions to the fullest extent by the district
attorney's offices that deal with these crimes have to be done.
And if they're not doing it, the arrests don't mean anything.
Now, the person who you just heard from right there,
he is a retired NYPD detective, Dave Sarney.
He also said the other issue that the NYPD is looking
into with all of these types of crimes, copycat crimes.
Because you see this stuff, they post it on social media,
and then suddenly someone else is doing the same thing.
Now, at this particular point,
the NYPD does not know if both of these cases are connected.
But I did reach out to the NYPD, and I am waiting to hear back.
For now, that's the very latest from here.
