Video Summary
AI GeneratedA 13-year-old boy was shot while sleeping in his bed at the Capitol Vignera Apartments in southeast Atlanta. This marks the second time the victim has been shot at the same apartment complex within 13 months. Despite the recurring violence, the Atlanta Police Department has not made any arrests in either the recent incident or the previous shooting from September 2023.
We understand a 13 year old has been shot for a second time
at the same apartment complex in southeast Atlanta.
Hernan Gutierrez has been digging into this story,
working to get new information and joins us live.
Hernan, what are you learning this afternoon?
Hey, Ariel, and I'm right outside of APD headquarters
where they haven't really given us much in that day.
I actually just heard from them.
I saw that they sent me an email right as we were about to go live.
But from what I was able to read in that
preview, they didn't really have any more
information about any arrests that might have
been made in the shooting on Sunday morning or any possible motives.
Let's take you to that scene,
some video from later in that morning from that shooting.
It happened at the Capitol Vignera
Apartments. That's just off of Hank Aaron Drive,
about 900 block of Hank Aaron Drive. It happened
at four in the morning.
And from what we're understanding, this 13-year-old boy, he was
in bed when he was shot his family does tell us
that he is uh okay he was released from the
hospital yesterday and is recovering uh
but we do understand that as you mentioned that this is
actually the second time that he was shot
at those very same apartments part of that email that i
that i had with APD was asking if they made any arrests
in that first shooting as far as we're
aware that first shooting again happened
at that same apartment complex on september 18th 2023
So last September, so pretty much within 13 months,
this 13-year-old boy was shot twice.
We know in that first shooting,
there were four or three other people who were shot.
It was three teenagers.
The boy who was shot yesterday, we haven't been able to confirm
his name, but he was actually 12 at the time of that shooting.
Again, APD just confirming that they don't think
that they've made any arrests in that shooting either.
Again, this was at the Capitol Venera Apartments.
We actually had a chance to speak with yesterday's shooting's victim.
His brother was also shot in that shooting last year.
His name is Jaden Battle.
Take a listen of what he had to say after he was shot last year.
They started shooting at us,
and then while the brother got hit, I got shot in the leg,
and my friend got shot in the leg two times.
So some witnesses on the scene there told Fox 5, again,
this was the shooting last year and you're looking at video or should
be looking at video from that scene last year, that there was some kind
of argument over a watch which led to that first shooting.
Again, that one was last year.
As for this year's shooting, the one that happened on Sunday,
again, APD really hasn't been releasing any additional updates.
We do know that the boy at this time,
that 13-year-old boy, he's now 13, is okay.
he's recovering and out of the hospital,
but they haven't made an arrest in this second shooting at
that apartment complex.
I did reach out to management at that apartment complex, the
Capitol Ventura Apartments, but I haven't heard back.
We did try asking some neighbors in the
area too, if they heard or saw anything over the weekend,
but we were actually told to leave the
apartments. And that's
when I was prompted to email the management to see if they had any
information that they could share with us. Got it.
Hernan, thanks so much for the update. You
know, this brings to mind a few questions,
just the idea of, is this random if the same apartment
complex or the same person has been shot within the span of a year
or so, and it's the same person?
I mean, how on earth did that boy sleeping
in his bed happens to be the one shot? You know,
I mean, you have to know if it were targeted,
where they stay, and all of those details.
Are you getting a sense from speaking with family
or just some of the investigative work that you've been able to do,
do you get a sense that this is targeted or intentional or not?
I really haven't been able to tell,
kind of, you know, asking around neighbors.
A lot of them were a little standoffish with us.
I personally haven't actually been able to get
in touch with any of the family members.
I know that our APD did speak with them yesterday at the scene,
but again, it's really hard to tell at this point
if this was targeted and intentional.
I do know that first shooting that happened, again,
that one that happened last year, the boy and his brothers
were actually outside on the sidewalk when it happened.
But this first one, again, happened overnight,
and he was in bed, as you say, so definitely a scary situation.
And we know from what the family tells us at the scene
that they're actually not staying at those apartments anymore
because they don't feel safe there.
Okay, important clarification.
Ron, thanks so much for letting us know what you know so far.
Hopefully when we see you again later this evening, police will
let you know a little bit more as to what they're looking into.
But thank you so much for the update.
I'll let you get back to gathering information.
