It also covers political protests, the installation of USC's new president, entertainment updates, and a shift toward cooler, rainy weather in Southern California.
Good evening. I'm Laura Diaz in for Susan Hirasuna.
Tragedy in Whittier. Police are
investigating a single vehicle crash
that left two people dead this morning. Authorities say
a vehicle slammed into a tree along the 5800 block
of Norwalk Boulevard. It happened just
before 9 a.m. Both the driver
and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic
investigators closed Norwalk Boulevard between Orange Drive
and Orchard Avenue as they worked
to figure out what caused that crash.
Tonight, evacuation orders have been lifted for the Norte
fire in South Orange County. 570 acres burned.
Containment now at 60 percent, but fire crews
still have a lot of work ahead.
Fox 11's Rachel Aragon reports from San Juan Capistrano. Containment
of the Norte fire continues to grow,
but crews will be busy for the next several days, not only
putting out hot spots to make sure the fire is completely out,
but also working on fire suppression
repair to prevent further erosion right now
the fire is holding at 570 acres as it has been for
the last day or so over the last 48 hours first
responders making big progress containing the
norte fire out of the corner of my eye saw a puff of smoke
and i'm like oh my god the blaze breaking
out friday and damaging and destroying several homes
and forcing evacuations in parts of san
clemente and san juan capistrano
but now all evacuation orders related to the norte fire
have been lifted. The Orange County Fire Authority says
at its peak there were about 800 people from
multiple agencies fighting this fire.
Now it's close to about half that number. We had many
resources you know pre-positioned
and we deployed a very very robust response. For the next few days
Greg Barta with the Orange County Fire Authority
says crews will continue to mop up hot spots
to make sure the fire is completely out.
But on top of all that they'll also be doing some fire
suppression repair. We mix up the ground out there.
We change the natural layout as part of
our firefighting effort. So now we go
and try to do as much reversal of that as we can because we
want to reduce the risk of erosion.
Barta says with El Nino and more storms expected to come our
way, erosion prevention is critical.
We're trying to put the dirt back in its normal layouts. If we
can, any type of vegetation that's been adjusted,
if we can kind of get it back to its normal spot,
But it's pretty much trying to get the natural lay of the land back
to what it originally was before the fire occurred.
And the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
And while things could change, fire officials tell me the weather,
though, seems to be in their favor,
with the winds here dying down
and rain looking to be in the forecast this coming week.
Reporting in San Juan Capistrano, I'm Rachel Aragon, Fox 11 News.
Planet Fitness is offering free showers, Wi-Fi, and a place
to rest for people affected by the Norte Fire in Orange County.
Three locations in Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest,
and Foothill Ranch are open to residents and first responders.
No membership is required.
And only on Fox 11 tonight, another fire and new concerns about what's
happening inside of downtown L.A.'s abandoned Hope Street buildings.
One property cleared last week,
but then right next door, another one catches fire.
Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf has the exclusive.
neighbors have been complaining about the issues
on this block for months the fires that keep
continuing the crime look at this window busted out
of that car another fire at another abandoned
building and now a body found at one of downtown
LA's troubled Hope Street properties, police
confirming the death to Fox 11, they pulled
a dead body out of the porta potty, it's like this
I think it's about
to catch on fire.
Fox 11 has been exclusively reporting on the repeated fires
and violent crimes surrounding
the abandoned properties.
After our reports, the city declares some
of the building's public nuisances, metal
barriers went up, a police surveillance tower moved in,
but people have still been breaking
inside.
Like all the homeless are just like going in and out of there,
making up their little
home. Recycle guys try to go in there,
try to scrape some metals, scrap some
metals. So it was a pain in the butt
to walk Charlie or for me and my girl to
even walk outside. The property owner here cleared
this lot after several
repeated fires. But before they even finished
the building right next door
also caught fire. I mean this is happening all over downtown. Uh these
are really important to us because they're surrounded by by residential
areas. But you know, the Fashion District also has a bunch of abandoned
buildings and everything's catching on fire.
Well, that shows just how secure it is.
Doors wide open, locks cut
and boarded entrances busted through where the most recent fire
took place.
But a homeless woman in another building next
to there that I'm worried that that
could get burned down because she's not supposed to be in there either.
Two months ago, residents worried
the building would go up in flames and it did.
Shouldn't take fire after fire to have some sort of action happen.
No, it shouldn't.
I mean, these residents have been great.
They're a very organized group.
We've called for streamlining the process to make it easier,
quicker to get properties declared a nuisance and get real teeth to it.
A spokesperson for Mayor Karen Bass tells Fox 11 they continue to work
with residents, business owners, LAPD, LAFD, and LADBS to secure
the buildings along Hope Street and minimize any public safety issues.
Even tonight, one of the buildings that's supposed to be secure,
you can see the door is wide open.
We reached out to Councilmember Isabel Jurado's
office multiple times and so far tonight.
we have her back. Reporting in downtown LA,
Matthew Seedorf, Fox 11 News. Thank you, Matthew.
And another fire in the Fashion District of downtown LA tonight,
a blaze burning through
the roof of a row of commercial buildings.
The LAFD says the buildings on East Pico Boulevard
house a commercial packing business.
Now, this video is from the Citizens app.
No injuries reported there.
It's been a bit of a rough week for LA sports fans. Many of us still
blew over the Dodgers loss
and unfortunately things didn't get any better today with the Rams
and the Chargers. Our Gerard Moncuray joins us now with more.
Gerard? Laura, thank you. Definitely
one of the uglier sports weeks I can remember in recent times for sure.
Rams in need of a bounce
back victory. After that overtime loss to the Bills
on Monday Night Football, this was supposed
to be the week their schedule got easier facing
the lonely Arizona Cardinals, but former Rams
offensive coordinator and current Redbirds head
coach Mike LaFleur had other plans. Quarterback
Matthew Stafford under constant pressure all afternoon,
long blitz after blitz, and the
offense struggled to move the ball most of the game.
They found the end zone on their last drive
but left too much time on the clock,
allowing Arizona's Chad Ryland to drop the 43-yard field
goal as time expired.
The preseason Super Bowl champs, or pardon me, preseason Super Bowl
favorites lose it 18-16 dropping to a stunning two
and four on the season there's nothing positive
that i can say about today um you know i do love
the group uh i appreciate the way that they
continue to battle thought we had a chance to be able
to you know come away with the result that
we hunted up it was pretty cool to be able
to see ethan punch in the extra point and stetson to be
able to hold and um unfortunately on the very first play
of the two minute you know they we
give up a big play, and then they tack on the 15.
So that was kind of, you know, good humbling day.
This is the challenging part of sports.
That's for the Chargers.
Their abysmal offense once again
falling flat, this time in Kansas City.
Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III led the Chiefs early
with two rushing touchdowns in the first half
and nearly 140 yards from scrimmage on the afternoon.
Chargers failed to find the end zone and lose it 22-6.
With that, the Bolts are now 0-6.
It's their worst start since the 2000 season.
I was in that locker room after the Rams game.
A lot of question marks, a lot of stunned faces.
We will have reaction from both the Chargers
and the Rams coming up a little bit later on in sports.
Laura?
Look forward to that. Thank you, Gerard.
Well, demonstrators in Westwood rallied today in support of Ukraine
as tensions grow between President Trump
and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The protests taking place outside of the federal building,
Zelensky has criticized recent U.S. actions,
such as limiting Ukraine's access to satellite internet
and waiving sanctions on Russian diesel to help lower U.S. fuel prices.
White House administration saying that it's in national interest.
I have a question as well, as many supporters.
Is this in national interest or it's in Putin's interest?
And we're here to remind the administration
to act within the interest of the American people
and stop appeasing Putin.
There's voice concerns over President
Trump's seemingly cozy relationship
with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Meantime, tensions in the Trump-Zelensky
relationship are raising questions
about ongoing U.S. military support
for Ukraine as its war with Russia continues.
Protesters from various faiths rallied today outside
of L.A.'s Museum of Tolerance,
accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, a claim Israel denies.
Jewish peace activist Rick Schurtoff criticized Israel's actions
as starvation tactics,
while actor David Clennon
and attorneys for UCLA students joined that event.
Those students say that they were attacked during
the 2024 pro-Palestine demonstrations
and are now suing the university.
UCLA defends its handling of the chaos.
Model and actress Kaya Gerber is sharing a moving tribute
to her older brother Presley, who died last month at just 27 years old.
In an emotional Instagram post, Kaya reflects on their lifelong bond,
sharing childhood video
and memories of the brother she calls her protector and best friend.
Gerber also wrote a long tribute on her Instagram page, saying in part,
My best buddy, my great protector,
the hardest I've ever laughed, and the one true love of my life.
You lit all of my candles and took all of my monsters away.
And his mother, model Cindy Crawford,
commented publicly for the first time about the death of her son,
saying on Instagram,
We are beyond heartbroken to lose our beloved son and brother.
We feel so blessed to have had Presley in our lives for 27 years.
He is a sweet, beautiful soul who loved and is loved now and forever.
We'll be right back.

of colors oh i love that sweet face and
speaking of pumpkins Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills hosted
a heartwarming Halloween themed
reunion for children
who at one time were premature babies in their neonatal intensive
care unit now five years later you see right there
those little pumpkins return dressed in
costumes to celebrate life health and hope with the doctors
and nurses who help them thrive good
night LA weather is sponsored by the law offices
of Larry H Parker well the difference of day
rings especially when we talk about
our weather headlines yesterday we were dealing with some
red flag warning issues,
which did include very drastically low humidity, but also some of those
very dangerous winds ripping through Southern California.
Those red flag warnings did lift
yesterday. So today we got left with a set
of calmer weather conditions, but also we also got
left with some cooler temperatures as well.
Some areas got close to 10 degrees cooler than what we
saw yesterday and we can expect more changes heading
into this work week. I do want to show
you our alert system because we did get rid
of those high wind warnings as well as our wind
advisory some heat advisories
and of course that red flag warning yesterday. As of now moving into
the start of our week we do have a rip current risk.
This is going to be for a beach statement
stretching from the Ventura County area through Orange County
which will include some of our
Los Angeles County beaches as well
so not just those dangerous rip currents we're also looking
at the potential for some breaking waves
and yes that elevated surf of three to six feet so this
will be in place to start our work week
at least through Tuesday otherwise our headlines include
the fact that as we roll over into tomorrow we'll start off
the day with some clouds by the time we
get to the afternoon we'll have plenty of sunshine
but we are also looking ahead to a major cool
off coming this week. Temperatures dropping down
into the 60s as well as the 70s. So a lot of fall
like weather finally arriving for us here across Southern California.
But it does come with the
chance for some rain and thunderstorm activity moving across the area.
Most of us looking at
our window for that wet weather as early as Tuesday
and for some of us likely to stretch
into Thursday as well. Now let's focus on these temperatures.
We're at 72 degrees right now in
Burbank down in Corona. Temperatures at 66.
A lot cooler in our mountains at 40. And as you take a
look along the coast we have areas like Long Beach
but also Huntington Beach in the lower 70s. Our
sustained winds a lot calmer than yesterday as well.
Currently moving up to five miles per hour
over in Victorville. Those winds pushing at about seven miles per hour.
Now our temperatures tonight
under beautiful skies we should have mostly clear skies across some
of the area but we are also
going to see our temperatures dropping down close
to their normal for some areas that does land us
in the upper 50s to low 60s now as we make our way
into tomorrow we are also looking at those
temperatures still slightly above our normal
but cooler than what we did see over the weekend so
by the afternoon we're expecting downtown to top off
in the lower 80s we will have some upper 80s
on the map most of those numbers will be the further east you go
and then we got to talk about
this wet weather we are looking at an upper level low
this system is going to be cut off from our
jet stream so it wants to be a little bit unpredictable
but what i can tell you as early
as tuesday moving into our wednesday
but also thursday we are looking at the shot of some pretty
widespread and yet measurable rain i'll be back
with more details on this including your seven
day forecast after this.

Here's a look at some of today's top stories.
Gas prices across Southern California continue to ease with the average
price in Los Angeles County dropping to $6.23 a gallon.
The recent decline follows the early rollout
of cheaper winter blend fuel, providing local drivers much-needed
relief after weeks of record-setting surges at the pump.
Though California gas prices still remain the highest in the nation.
Tomorrow night's Powerball drawing offers another shot
at a life-changing payout
with the estimated jackpot climbing
to $607 million after no one won last night's drawing.
Players have until 7 p.m. to buy
their tickets before the numbers are drawn.
The cash option for tomorrow's jackpot is valued at over $255 million.
And tonight, someone in Anaheim could be $64 million richer.
this weekend's winning Super Lotto Plus ticket
was sold at the 7-Eleven on South Magnolia.
The winning numbers? 3, 25, 27, 29, 37.
The mega number is 17. The winner hasn't been identified
yet. The jackpot now resets to $7 million
for the next drawing on Wednesday. And when USC was
searching for a new president, they didn't have to look far.
It's usually a nationwide search,
but this one ended on campus.
Byung-Soo Kim had been at USC since 2020, serving as senior vice
president and general counsel until July of last year,
when he was named interim president. This
week, he was officially installed as USC's 13th president.
Fox 11's Glenn Walker got the chance
to sit down with the new Trojans president.
Congratulations, President Kim. Byung-Soo Kim's
academic credentials, impeccable.
He's a graduate of Harvard Law School and the London School of
Economics, but at the end of the day, he's that local boy made good.
Grew up in Woodland Hills,
a graduate of Calabasas High School.
Did you ever envision where you'd be today? Absolutely not,
but I've been absolutely loving it.
So grew up in the valley, was a valley boy, and my parents
went to USC though.
So I always grew up understanding how special this place was.
Kim's previous post as USC's VP
and general counsel may well have prepared him
for the challenges of a university president.
While serving as interim president, Kim was
staring at a $200 million deficit,
which led to the layoff of 900 USC employees.
The layoffs that we had to do last year
were extraordinarily painful for members
of our community and at the same time, they had to be done.
I did something like 40 plus town halls
and I said this is the situation, let's lean into
this challenge together.
And what we did is we turned that budget deficit around,
wiped it out, and we're going to be
ending this last fiscal year that ended in June,
tens of million dollars in the positive.
we're going to keep building on that in the years to come.
Kim is also well aware of USC's reputation
as a private school with a large number of students
and alumni coming from wealth and a
campus sitting on the edge of a low-income neighborhood.
Kim says under his stewardship,
USC will continue to expand on reaching out
with opportunities for disadvantaged students.
How do you give those folks better access to the university as students
and also helping out in
community. Yeah, that is so important to me.
We don't just exist in Los Angeles. We're part of
the city. We're an anchor institution.
And one of the programs that I'm most proud of is the
McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative.
That program has had extraordinary success.
They, almost all of them, go to college.
From political viewpoints to race and other issues,
Kim, like any other modern-day university president,
supports campus diversity.
We may not agree on everything, and that's healthy.
That's part of what it means to be in a university.
That's how you learn, and frankly,
that's what it means to be in a democracy.
But when we disagree, we have to do it in a civil way.
It's not appropriate to take a disagreement into vandalism
or into any kind of violence.
And we have absolutely no tolerance when it crosses that line.
When things have gotten out of control,
you've had to bring in local law enforcement outside of campus police.
What is your policy on that?
When people break the law, they need to be held accountable.
And we have an obligation to make sure that this campus remains
a safe place for all of our students, for all of our community members.
and that is not in any way inconsistent with giving everyone
the freedom of speech that they're entitled to.
Think about AI.
As for USC's true mission, academics,
Kim believes future curriculum must include artificial intelligence.
USC has an incredible opportunity to lead the country
in developing a general ed undergraduate program
that not only equips students with the AI skills that they need,
but also with the human qualities.
Those skills, I think, are going
to become even more valuable in this AI age.
Of course, you can't talk about USC without discussing athletics,
especially Trojans football,
and dealing with issues like NIL and conference realignment.
Athletics are a core part of USC
and what makes us love this university so much.
But we've got to do it all.
And we are going to do it all in terms of the educational leadership,
in terms of the research.
Would I love to win a national football championship? Absolutely.
Would I love to solve and cure Alzheimer's disease at USC?
Absolutely. Fight on.
Pope Leo XIV is back at the Vatican after lung cancer surgery.
He appeared before thousands in St. Peter's Square earlier today,
thanking people for their prayers.
The Pope says he'll gradually resume his duties as he recovers.
And goodbye to the heat and hello to the rain.
We're going to go to Star Harvey now
to talk about the change in the weather.
Star.
Yes, that's right.
We are expecting to see those changes, Laura, and they're expected
to arrive for us as early as the middle of this week.
Now, we did get some cooler conditions today compared to yesterday.
We also got rid of the red flag warning, those advisories along
the coast for our heat, but also we got rid of those wind alerts.
Now, what we do still have in place is a beach hazard statement.
This is letting us know stretching from the Oxnard area all
the way through L.A. County into portions of Orange County as well.
We could still see the potential for dangerous rip current risk,
the likelihood of breaking waves.
And yes, that elevated surf reaching anywhere
from about three to six feet.
So we are going to see that in place until Tuesday morning.
Otherwise, I want to take a look at these temperatures.
A lot of us saw our temperatures drop from yesterday,
in some cases, nearly eight to
ten degrees.
Today, downtown came in at eighty nine.
You can see we're still well above our normal of seventy eight.
I can tell you at some point this week,
by the middle of the week, we are expecting to
drop below that 78 degrees.
And then throughout most of the other portions of this week, our
temperatures should be around that number.
Here's a look at how impressive some of the other areas
did as well today.
So not just 80s across downtown, we had 80s along the coast. So
through Long Beach into Anaheim, the San Fernando Valley,
the Santa Clarita Valley, into portions of
the Inland Empire. We also saw some 90 degree temperatures,
some 80s. And yes, we also had
our mountains dropping down to the 60s
so still a little bit of a cooler conditions there but much
more of it as we head into this week
and we do have our eyes pointed towards this low pressure
system here that system sliding down closer
to us as we move towards the middle of this week
so by tuesday we could notice a pop
of some rain entering into the forecast more of our
precipitation due to arrive for us moving in not just on Wednesday
but also into Thursday. It will
not be until we get to Friday that we really start
to see this system shifting out. Now this
low pressure system it is an upper low cut off from the jet stream
so it does have the likelihood
to unfold multiple ways creating its own little pattern there
and so with that being said we're
also watching the tropics we do have Hurricane Trudy
this is going to be near the Baja area
now with that system that low pressure system sitting closer
to us there is the potential
that Hurricane Trudy could bring in some moisture
so that system really sucking in the potential to
allow for more precipitation across our area
so that is going to determine how our rain
accumulation essentially plays out.
We are looking at two situations here where we have some models
indicating locally we could see anywhere from about
a quarter of an inch to a half of an inch
and then we have the other play out where we could
see about three quarters of an inch to about an
inch and a half. So as we get closer to that we'll have
those numbers kind of dialed in. Otherwise
we're going for the 80s tomorrow.
There's a look at some 70s but also 60s popping up in our
temperature department and the chance
for those umbrellas needed at least tuesday through thursday
we're going to go ahead and send things over to sports

to the buffalo bills an overtime defeat that saw
the team oust kicker harrison mevis in favor of
newcomer blake gruppi the preseason super bowl
favorites today playing host to the arizona
the Cardinals, a squad that won just three games last season.
However, former Rams offensive
coordinator Mike LaFleur, now the Cardinals head coach,
and that can make a huge difference in
terms of game planning. Pick this one up deep in the fourth.
Rams trailing 15-9, but in the red
zone, Matthew Stafford hits Kobe Parkinson on the outside.
He'll fight his way into the end zone for
the touchdown. That catch and stretch ties the game at 15 apiece.
So it's up to the punter,
Ethan Evans to take the lead after a PAT
because newly signed kicker Gruppi left the game earlier
with a leg injury. He will line it up and connect.
72,000 plus in the house on their feet going wild.
Rams take a 16-15 lead,
but the Cardinals with plenty of time for a final drive. Arizona on
their own 35, ensuing drive to Jacoby Brissett over the middle,
connecting with Jalen Brooks,
A gain of 21, and then the Rams get flagged
for an extra 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.
The Redbirds instantly in business.
Four plays later, Chad Ryland lining up the 43-yarder for the win,
and he boots it through.
Cardinals sneak away with an 18-16 victory as the Rams fall to 2-4,
finding themselves in last place in the NFC West.
When you look at it,
football is a game of execution when you boil things down to it.
Can you go out there and can you make the plays?
Can you, you know, do the right thing over and over and over again?
And that's what it boils down to in this league,
and we're just not doing that at a consistent enough basis right now.
Yeah, it's sickening.
That's what it is.
It's sickening.
It's, you know, got to go through a grieving process.
You know, we put so much work into this.
Nobody wants to come in here and lose.
We want to play our best ball.
We want to, you know, we want to perform.
We're in a situation where, you know,
we're sitting at 2-4, you know what I'm saying?
and what are you going to do when your back's against the wall?
You either, you know, fold and crumble and cry about it, or you work.
You know, you move forward, and that's
what this team is about, you know, work.
And so I know that's what we'll do.
I know, you know, we'll get back to work tomorrow,
and we'll get better, man.
We're going to get better.
Rams visit the Raiders next week in Vegas.
Winless Chargers heading to Kansas City facing
Patrick Mahomes and the undefeated Chiefs.
The Bolts hoping to avoid an 0-6 start,
which would be their worst start
since losing their first 11 games back in the 2000 season.
Last time any winless NFL team beat a 4-0 squad,
you've got to go back to 2002.
The Chiefs' Kenneth Walker III putting

Casey leading 3-0 in the first.
He bursts through the hole, and he's off

They'd missed the extra point, but lead it 9-0.
Turnovers, of course, have been a huge problem for the Bolts.
Today was no different, now trailing 9-3 in the second.
