Today's trade talks are picking up once again
as an interesting new report has dropped
surrounding the Jays' pursuit of a starting pitcher.
And while the Jays have lots of holes to fill this offseason,
there is one hole still remaining,
and that is a starting pitcher.
We're going to break down this new report,
discuss what it means going forward ahead
of a very interesting next few weeks
for this front office as well as a few other tidbits
of information you're going to want to stay tuned for.
But before we get into it all, and there is a lot
of very quick reminder to hit that subscribe
button, you guys are in peace with the support.
folks a lot of trade talks are starting to pick up one
of the reasons of that is trades are going
to be more likely to happen than you know free
agency signings this offseason in the sense of
obviously there's gonna be a lot of free agency
signings but the free agency class is a little
bit weaker so the trade market is going to be heating up
and a new report has dropped surrounding
Logan Gilbert and there was an interesting article
that dropped surrounding a Logan Gilbert trade and
i want to dive into it i actually think it's a move
that makes a lot of sense for this team right
now we can we can have the debate about whether
or not you know we think that the Steelers um i
know why i just said the Steelers watching
football today i guess um on whether or not
you think the Blue Jays are actually going to go out
and spend high amounts of assets for
a starting pitcher but Logan Gilbert 200 innings
pitched last year basically a 3.73 ERA he's as
reliable as it comes he's been good for an extremely long time
and Sports Illustrated
broke down an article basically saying how the Jays
are a perfect fit for Logan Gilbert but there
is one player who Toronto should consider trading
for and that is Logan Gilbert now i'll start with
obviously this article dives into an actual trade
we'll dive into a minute but i think just the
player itself and Logan Gilbert kind of a perfect fit for this team
and you know are the Mariners
actually going to go out and make this make this move it's tough
because obviously you know the
Jays are a bit of a rival and all
that but i don't necessarily think that it's completely out of the
ordinary especially if they get a good prospect up there in the deal
but it's interesting because
it would be a huge swing for this front office
and at the end of the day they're going to need
to make a pretty big move for a starting pitcher
and i don't think at this juncture that there's
going to be a massive massive free agency
starting pitching signing outside of maybe
Tarik Skubal if they get heavily involved there I think
their big swings are going to be for a
bat right whether that be Seiya Suzuki,
Teraki Sato etc but I like Gilbert a lot let's dive into
his stats before I dive into the return here you
can see he obviously has pitched his whole career
with Seattle and 3.73 ERA last year 3.44
the year before 3.23 the year before he's been steady he's
been absolutely steady he's a very very solid guy
is he an ace absolutely not but let's assume that
maybe they rematch Shane Bieber
on a one-year deal you're looking at a rotation of Dylan Cease
you have Trey Savage you have Logan Gilbert you have all
these guys Cody Ponce Shane Bieber like
that is a very solid rotation now the question will
be how much it will take to get Gilbert
because he's 29 years old he's kind
of in his prime right now he is consistently almost Jose
Barrio-esque going to give you between a 3.2
and a 3.7 ERA in 200 innings every year it's basically
what he does almost every season
and i think at this point it would be really really cool now the
one question mark for him is the one year left on his deal
so he'll be a free agent after this year
so i think that's where maybe you could get him
for a little bit cheaper compared to other options
but i do really really like um this i really like
this idea especially for a mariners team now that
is probably going to be open to potentially
trading guys just because they're in a bit of a
retool a bit of a rebuild if you want to call it
that i'm definitely not a rebuild a retool after
last year and you know they haven't really had
a ton of playoff success so there's been reports
about the front office over there potentially looking
to just kind of completely change it up
and maybe it ends up being a rebuild at this point
who really knows but let's uh let's dive
into the proposed return here in a minute
but let's first look at the starting pitchers and
how it worked out right cease gilbert you savage
obviously scherzer's gonna be gone corbin's gonna
be gone you throw bieber there you throw cody
pons they need some reliability now the proposed
return i'm not a huge fan of so they propose either nolan perry
or johnny king and another
top 15 prospect paired with you know utility guy
and josh smith or david schneider this is where
it's rough because it does take two to tango here
and at the end of the day the jays will have to
give up a very good prospect
and i want you guys to comment down below would you trade i'm not
trading Nolan Perry, but would you trade Nolan Perry
or Johnny King for Logan Gilbert and the
argument for it is you know he's very very good you'd hope
that one of Nolan Perry or Johnny King
could be as good as Logan Gilbert you haven't
for the next handful of years it's interesting i'm not
saying I necessarily would completely shut it down I find it hard
to want to trade Nolan Perry
at this point but maybe he's at his highest value
right I'd maybe consider Johnny King but also you
don't have control so would the Mariners be able
to give you know get that great of a return with
only one year left of free agency maybe if there's
an understanding they're going to extend him like
if this was a trade deadline move it would
definitely require one of those prospects but
you're in the offseason you have some time to work around
so that part I'm a little bit less
excited about giving up one of King
or Nolan Perry I think Johnny King is probably the one that would
go out in a deal like this and he does fit the timeline for the Jays
though there's absolutely
no doubt about it and I think they have
a really good like Ross Atkins said they have a good
starting point right now surrounding the starting rotation
but they need a lot of work done now if
you're unfamiliar with Logan Gilbert we can dive
into him a little bit in his arsenal here so he
primarily features a four seamer touches can touch upward
of 97 98 miles an hour has a great slider
a splitter a changeup a curveball a cutter
and I think if you're the Jays and you can get Pete
Walker to get his hands on him he would you could
probably make him even better I'm not saying he's
ever going to be an ace I just don't necessarily
see Logan Gilbert as an ace at this point and
they already have their ace in Dylan Cease
but I do think there's a lot of areas where you can go
ahead and actually improve the uh you know his arsenal
and at the end of the day depth is very
important here you have your core players you have
your Dylan Ceases of the world you have
your foundation Cease your Savage
and maybe Ponce depending on what he brings you'd be adding
another piece immediately right
and we can obviously look at some of the questions heading
the next year uh Pons and Francis maybe you know
returning Spencer Getty where do you guys view
him Spencer Miles could start they could bring
back Gosman i've had videos on that but at the
end of the day they're gonna need another big arm
and if you don't get Gosman back which i still
think is fairly likely you're gonna have to make a move
and i really really like Logan Gilbert
just as a foundation the problem will be always
in the trade like this the Mariners are not going
to want to at the end of the day the Mariners
are not going to want to trade him for pennies or
anything like that right because it's against an AL rival
and if you look at Seattle without Gilbert
they're not as good of course
but also again like i keep mentioning the Mariners are in a bit of a
weird spot right now to where they could probably they're
a bit more interested in trading assets
than in the past and yeah it's interesting if you're the Jays
though where do you kind of draw
the line here at the end of the day i don't know
if i give up a guy like Nolan Perry their number
two prospect especially with one year left
in the deal if you have an extension kind of in place
then it gets a bit easier because
who would you rather on your team next year Johnny King or Logan
Gilbert, the answer is Logan Gilbert. How long going
forward would you want that again? Logan Gilbert's
only 29 years old, he's gonna be entering
his age 30 season, he has a handful of years left, he has
been the most or one of the most consistent pitchers
in baseball and those do not grow on
trees by any means and I think at this point
if you are the Jays making a swing like this, makes
a ton of sense. The biggest question will be where
do the Jays actually end up in their starting
rotation spot because you know if Cody Ponce comes back
and give them some really good innings that
answers one of the big questions if you come back
and let's say you bring back Shane Bieber, there's
rumblings about maybe even then bringing back Max Scherzer
which I don't necessarily love, this will
all depend but the trade market is going
to be a lot hotter than previous years and keep in mind
reports are coming out that November is going
to be the hottest month instead of December because
the lockout starts December 1st
or whatever 6th whatever the lockout is, which I don't expect to
last crazy crazy long but not all the time moves
are gonna be happening in December because of
that, so folks let me know down below again
which prospect would you give up? Would it be somebody
else? I don't know if I'm giving up multiple top 10 prospects
or anything like that for Logan
Gilbert even though he's a very very good player
but at the end of the day here i am i'm very
interested folks your support's been unbelievable it's obviously
a very slow part of the offseason
hopefully you're enjoying the football enjoying the hockey
or the baseball of course that's still
ongoing and we'll keep you up to date every step
of the way nonetheless hopefully jays
make a pretty big move once off season i guess watching
