A fast-moving wildfire is tearing through Southern California,
forcing thousands of
residents to evacuate as towering flames threaten
homes near San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
The Norte Fire erupted on October 16 near San Clemente,
rapidly spreading across dry
hillsides as powerful Santa Ana winds pushed
flames toward residential neighborhoods.
By early October 17, the fire had burned approximately 465 acres
with zero percent containment, according
to the latest figures provided.
Earlier reports put the fire's size even higher
at around 570 acres.
At least six homes have been damaged or destroyed,
while thousands more remain threatened.
Dramatic footage from the area shows a massive wall
of fire stretching across hillsides,
with thick smoke rising behind residential streets.
Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation
orders across designated zones in San Clemente
and San Juan Capistrano.
The evacuation areas cover thousands of homes,
with estimates suggesting that around 16,000
people could be affected.
Hundreds of firefighters are battling the blaze,
supported by aircraft dropping fire retardant
and helicopters working to slow its advance.
Crews has also been focusing on protecting homes
and containing flames near residential areas.
At least one firefighter has reportedly been injured,
with some reports indicating multiple firefighter injuries.
No civilian fatalities or injuries had been reported
in the updates provided.
Strong winds, dry vegetation, low humidity,
and steep terrain are making firefighting operations
especially challenging.
Despite overnight efforts to knock down flames
in some areas, the fire remains uncontained
and conditions could change rapidly.
Emergency officials are urging residents
in evacuation zones to follow official instructions
and leave immediately when ordered.
Authorities continue to monitor the fire
as crews work to protect communities
from further
destruction.
