A Valley man is facing murder charges tonight after
a wrong-way crash that killed a little girl
and left her mother in extremely critical condition.
It happened this week near downtown Phoenix,
and the violent crash was caught on security camera.
Fox 10's Brian Webb is live tonight with more. Brian.
The crash happened here at the corner of 18th Street and Washington.
This is a semi-tricky one-way stretch of road behind me,
along with those light rail tracks and trains to contend with.
But authorities say the cause of this crash
is much more simple, drunk driving.
Wednesday, October 14th,
11 a.m. at the intersection of 18th Street and Washington in Phoenix.
And a crash caught on camera so violent, we can't show it here.
This is video showing the aftermath.
Police say the pickup truck was speeding
and going the wrong way on Washington Street.
Then the driver runs a red light and T-bones a Nissan Sentra,
killing a 10-year-old girl and critically injuring her mother,
who is not expected to survive.
All right, sir, could you please give me
your full name and date of birth?
Richard Blackstar, 731-67.
This is 59-year-old Richard Blackstar in court.
Authorities say he admitted drinking that morning.
Police say they found a tall can of hard seltzer in the truck.
His blood alcohol level was .181, twice the legal limit.
The allegations that you were driving the wrong way,
ran a red light at a high rate of speed.
the fact that there are multiple alleged victims,
both of whom are deceased as a result of your
alleged actions. Given all of that,
the court considers your actions and you to be a danger
to the safety of this community.
Records show Blackstar is a veteran with a lengthy criminal
record mostly tied to Flagstaff.
He was not seriously injured in the crash.
