Brazil's presidential election is heading for a nail-biting finish,
with a new poll giving right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro
a narrow lead over incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
But here's the catch.
The gap is just two percentage points,
and that could make Brazil's October 25th runoff far too close to call.
According to a Quest poll released on Thursday,
Bolsonaro has 46% support, compared with Lula's 44%.
And while Bolsonaro is currently ahead,
the difference falls within the poll's
two percentage point margin of error.
So what does this tell us about Brazil's political mood?
Let's look at how the race reached this point.
In the first round of voting on October 4,
Bolsonaro outperformed expectations,
finishing ahead of Lula by less than two percentage points.
That result came despite several polls
suggesting that Lula was on track
for a narrow first-round victory,
but neither candidate secured the majority
needed to win outright,
setting up a decisive second round on October 25th.
And the latest numbers suggest Bolsonaro
has managed to maintain his momentum.
A separate Datafola poll also puts him ahead of Lula.
However, his lead has narrowed significantly
over the past week.
Bolsonaro's support fell from 49% to 47%,
while Lula's rose to 45%.
That means the gap has shrunk
from four percentage points to just two.
And with election day approaching,
even a small shift in voter support could prove crucial.
But Bolsonaro is not the only candidate
trying to change the narrative.
Lula has been rallying supporters following his first-round setback,
holding large demonstrations
and focusing his campaign on social reforms and the cost of living.
One major issue is workers' rights.
Brazil's Senate has approved
a constitutional amendment reducing the maximum work week from
44 hours to 40 hours without cutting pay.
The change is a key policy priority for Lula,
who has presented it as a major victory for
workers and their families.
He has also proposed a constitutional amendment
to guarantee free public transportation in
Brazilian cities on weekends,
aiming to ease everyday expenses for working-class households.
Meanwhile, Bolsonaro is working to strengthen
his position among conservative voters.
The son of former far-right President Jair
Bolsonaro has secured endorsements from right-wing
and center-right parties
while seeking to build a coalition that appeals to businesses and
investors. However, analysts point out that he has
not gained as much support from eliminated
conservative candidates as some expected after the first round.
And that could become a critical
factor in the final stretch of the campaign.
Will conservative voters unite behind Bolsonaro?
Can Lula's social and economic promises
bring more voters back to his side?
For now, the polls show a tight contest,
with Bolsonaro narrowly ahead but Lula still within
striking distance. And the margin falling within the polling error,
the numbers do not guarantee
a victory for either candidate.
On October 25th, Brazil will return to the ballot box to decide
who leads Latin America's largest country.
The stakes are high, and the final outcome could
shape Brazil's economic priorities,
social policies and political direction for years to come.
