Pedestrian fatally struck by tractor-trailer while trying to cross Routes 1 & 9 in Elizabeth

Tragedy in Union County after a man is hit and killed by a tractor trailer. It happened in Elizabeth last night. News 12's Tony Caputo is at the scene this morning. And Tony, do we know how this accident happened? Well, we know that he was apparently trying to cross the roadway is the best I can tell you right now. That's according to a witness who told Elizabeth police, who in turn let us know that the victim here was trying to cross this roadway. Now, 1 and 9 is certainly known for these incidents, unfortunately, with many of them happening over the years. But apparently he was just trying to cross this very busy roadway at about 9:30 last night when he was struck by a tractor trailer. When police arrived, they found the victim's body in the roadway, and the driver of the tractor trailer was still on scene from what we understand. Again, a witness told Elizabeth Police the man was attempting to cross when the trailer struck him. No word on what the situation was at the time, whether he was crossing and the light was green or red or what have you, if the tractor-trailer was moving too quickly. We don't know any of that just yet. Elizabeth Police Traffic Division, as well as Union County Crash Investigation Team, they are investigating. The man's name has not been released. No word yet if the truck driver will face any charges. But again, this stretch of Roadway 1 and 9, we've covered many fatalities over the years. I mean, five of them dating back to December of 2023. And I believe there was one just recently in September of this year. So, again, as we get more information on this fatality, we'll certainly pass it along. But a man struck and killed by a tractor trailer out here. Important to note, this happened about 9.30 last night in this area. Northbound was blocked for quite some time.
