Free for all plus on a Wednesday night, but it's Sam's Friday.
It is.
It is my Friday.
I'm happy about it.
Your weekend begins tomorrow.
It does.
A little bit of an extended weekend.
Yeah, I'm going to a concert tomorrow.
Well, good.
I know you're excited about that.
It's going to be really fun.
You want to tell people which one?
Carol G.
Okay.
Carol G.
She's performing at AT&T Stadium.
She's one of my favorites.
And Mike apparently is a fan now.
I'm going to become one.
Yeah.
After some of the videos you just showed me.
so uh well good we'll make the most
of our last night together here maybe my last night on the
air maybe i'll send a photo
or like a little vid from the from jerry world you know maybe maybe not
kevin sumlin joins us on the show in a few minutes
the former a&m coach now coaching in dallas yeah
coaching pro football we'll hear from the coach
in a moment let's begin with the cowboys preparations
underway for the Packers on the road Sunday night.
Practice today, team president Stephen Jones
visiting with coach Brian Schottenheimer
as practice was getting underway. Of course,
defensive coordinator Christian Parker's
in the spotlight given the fact that veteran defensive
assistant Mike Pettin has been added to the staff as an advisor.
Pettin was spotted at the start of
the day, but not on the field
when the media was allowed to watch practice. An interesting moment
from Schottenheimer today.
He defended Parker and then assured us that he still believes in the
young coordinator and schottenheimer contradicted
something jerry said just yesterday when the
cowboys owner announced on his radio show
that parker would be moving up into the booth to call
the shots from there during games shoddy says
not so fast my friend none of those decisions have
been finalized you know we've had great conversations
um you know throughout this
whole process you guys know last weekend was a busy weekend for us
and of course you know spent
hours with CP talking about different things
and options and with Jerry and Stephen going over the
game and things we need to do in all three phases quite honestly
to get better so as we work through
the week we'll figure out what's best
and we're going to do whatever we think gives us the best
chance to win I think there's benefits to both
by adding Mike Pettine we might not have to do that
you know again I think the biggest thing is what gives us
the best chance to communicate information
and to solve problems there's that's what we do we solve problems
and so um as we work through this
process you know we don't have to make
that decision today uh we're working through all
the different ways of okay what if we do this what
if we do that and uh again we're going to
use the time to our favor to to finalize that decision
but um there's a good chance that
Christian Parker is is on the field and Pettine is up
and we'll talk through those things as we
go and again at the end of the day we're going
to do what we think gives the best chance to play
well and win. Christian Parker's our defensive coordinator
and everything, all decisions will
run through him. We're supporting him. I support him.
I believe so strongly in the guy. I do. I
think the guy's an incredible football coach.
We have to coach better. We've got to play better.
I think, you know, our players will be the first ones to say,
you know, there's things that they
need to do better. There's things I need to do better.
And so no one is sitting here pointing
the fingers at Christian Parker.
But as the head coach, you have to make decisions that
you think helps you win games, and that's in all three phases.
I think it's absolutely a great sign
that Schottenheimer contradicts Jerry
today. Yeah, I think that gives him all sorts
of credibility with his football team,
certainly with his coaching staff.
Now, it's gonna be interesting now to see where Parker is
Sunday night, right? Yeah, that's gonna be one of the
storylines. I mean, this would happen a lot
with former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
every coach right every coach
so no and i i would expect coach schottenheimer to back christian
parker because coach shoddy chose parker as his defensive coordinator
so i think he wants this
to work and he feels that mike pettin will be a guy
that can just get in his ear a little bit more
and just offer a different perspective all right i got
a text from my my cousin steve ducey he's
my first cousin he's been with fox news channel
for 30 years he's on fox and friends as their
roving reporter now. And he tipped me off of the fact
that he would be interviewing Jerry Jones at
Jerry's home in Highland Park this morning.
I've never gotten that introduction or that invitation
myself. But anyway, we're gonna show you that now.
Steve Ducey, the network Ducey with Jerry
at home this morning on Fox and Friends.
I'm here in Jerry Jones's living room.
Jerry, good morning to you. Good morning, partner.
This is fancy. Well, I don't know about that,
But it's unique for us to be sitting here at this time of morning
and as though we were having cocktails in the afternoon.
Well, I'll be back.
Come on, let's go for a little walk through your house.
Now, Jerry told me that is the chair Kissinger sits in.
That's correct.
When he came, he was here.
And so I said, do you remind me a lot of Henry Kissinger, a diplomat?
That's my kind of gift of gab.
This house is stunning.
We've been here an hour.
But that couch right over there,
the settee loveseat, what do you call it?
Yes, they've got it right.
That thing is your prized possession.
Well, really, it's been here.
Come walk on over, take a look at that.
It's been here, but a lot of people are surprised to see
that I would spend that much attention, if you will, to a loveseat.
But that's easily the nicest thing that's in this house
as far as furniture is concerned, but it's fun to sit on.
It is fun to sit on.
You've got a lot of little, very delicate,
there's a Renoir right over there in the corner.
Do you let the grandkids just run loose?
Because I think I'd be yelling all day long.
Well, believe it or not, their parents have an appreciation
and keep an eye on them close.
But this thing's pretty childproof.
And that's the key thing.
We want to watch their safety more than we
do the value of something they might mess up.
You have a lovely foyer here.
We're going into, oh, right over there is the dining room,
and you had a little celebration there last night, right?
Well, we did, and it was kind of neat.
We played.
Literally, there were just a couple of us,
and we had some folks that we work with daily.
But we just sat on one end, and the other one sat on the other end
and had a little birthday celebration.
Happy 84.
Well, it's good to be here.
Of course, people hear 84, they think, okay, he's going to retire.
You're not going to retire, are you?
No, I'm not.
I was with President Clinton yesterday
and the day before on my birthday.
And we were talking about that.
And I paraphrased the great Toby Keith.
We're not going to let that old man in.
Or Red Solo Cup.
Did you have Red Solo Cups around there?
Well, not really.
But this is a fun area.
And when we have Christmas here, we fill that area up.
We fill this area up with family and makes a very festive time.
And your outdoors, all those trees all lit up,
it's absolutely stunning.
Well, those are crape myrtle.
They were there and planted about three
years before we actually built a house
in anticipation of having some growth
and having them here when we got ready to go.
Okay, now this is the Jerry Jones room.
This is the library?
Well, it is the library.
And actually a story, Jean, my wife,
had always dreamed it because she saw in My Fair Lady
this real beautiful tall library, narrow but tall.
Can we tilt up and take a look at this?
It's two stories.
The ceiling are the constellations,
and they really did lay on their back, like Michelangelo.
And they really did lay on their back and paint those constellations.
And those are where the stars are in February,
which represents her birthday.
That's perfect. And I see some photographs here.
There you are with President Trump.
Yes. There you are with President Bush.
Yeah. There you are with-
President Reagan. President Reagan.
And then there's a favorite of mine with, that's with Phil Knight. And
when we were celebrating, we were actually on the field in New York and
announcing that we had decided to come together
and it's quite a controversial time as well.
Let's come on over here. Here's the hardware.
Well, these are not only something that
we cherish. These are enlarged Super Bowl rings
that represent these three Super Bowls.
And of course, those are the Tiffany made Super Bowl trophies
and those are there.
They're here reminding you as you come through here,
where's the others and get some more with it. Where are the others?
Jerry, it's been 30 years.
I was talking to my cousin Mike Ducey, the sportscaster for Fox here
in Dallas. He was telling me about the defense,
you're worried about your defense.
Well, let's say this, we've changed everything
on the defense, not until
literally both teams have had more changes.
We've changed out the personnel dramatically,
we've changed out the coaching staff totally.
We've changed out the schemes involved.
That first year we won one game.
We're evolving, but it's probably a little more
time needed than I had anticipated
when we made these changes this year.
Slow and steady. Speaking of trophies,
down the street from you here in Highland Park,
the neighborhood in Dallas, Lamar Hunt was one of your neighbors.
And didn't you guys have a trophy
thing, a contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys?
We sure did, Lamar was known for his,
he's known his games by his sisters.
And he made this trophy that was called the Preston Road Trophy.
And he lived down the street and we lived on Preston Road.
The winner, when the Kansas City Chiefs play,
whether it's preseason or whether it's regular,
the winner gets that trophy.
That's great.
And one day, he had it, they had won.
And I had some friends and called
and I asked him if I could come by or get the trophy and
show them. And he said, no,
that wasn't the spirit of things that I'll put it in the window
and you can drive by and look at it.
But Lamar was great. I really admired him.
That's awesome. If you look in the window here,
that's a Norman Rockwell.
Yes. That is a special painting for you, isn't it?
Absolutely. I'd just been involved with the Cowboys about three months
and Ross Perot called
and I was just stunned
and just an honor to visit with him on the phone. He said, Jerry,
I'm sitting with some people.
I collect Norman Rockwell paintings,
the great artist, Saturday Evening Post illustrator.
And he said, the Cowboys should have that.
The provenance of it should be buying through the Cowboys.
And I said, Mr. Perot, if you could see me,
and I turned my pockets inside out.
And I said, I've spent everything I can and got on football.
I can't do it for a painting.
He said, I want to send it over anyway.
We ended up, that's called the toss.
And it's probably easily the most famous painting there is in sport,
in football sport.
And so I bought it, it hurt to buy it.
But it's appreciated more than the Cowboys in terms of percentages.
And there you've got Irvin, Emmitt Smith
and Aikman that picture right over there.
Yeah, I like to every time I walk to I realize
as a group as well as individually their contributions
to, certainly from my perspective,
one of the greatest times of my life.
Yeah, absolutely. Well, this has been a great tour,
Jerry. Can I call you Jerry?
Well, you certainly can. Thank you very much.
Absolutely. Okay, Steve, I think we can make it go.
This is a fun way to start
the morning. Steve Doocy, nice job.
Great job. I enjoyed that.
Jerry will probably be talking
to you about that the next time you see him.
I'm sure we'll be getting into that a little bit.
What a house, though. Let's get back to sports.
Let's do it. Blaming people.
Whose decisions do you trust more, Schottenheimer or Jerry?
The coach leads early.
Go to foxnews.com slash free-for-all.
Scan the code.
Coach Kevin Sumlin up next.
Right now,
we'd like to welcome in Kevin Sumlin,
new head coach of the Dallas Renegades.
Comes to Dallas, of course,
after coaching the Houston Gamblers of the UFL last season.
Coach, how does it feel to be in Dallas?
I know you're well acquainted with this area.
Yeah, it feels great.
You know, we're really excited.
Family's excited.
You know, I think our league's excited, obviously.
There's been some movement with some teams.
But for me, this is great.
I mean, being back in the state of Texas
and obviously being here in Dallas, you know, at the home headquarters
of the UFL is really exciting for us and really exciting for our team.
Coach, what do you like about coaching in this league?
You know, I was telling somebody the other day, you know, to me,
I probably view it a little bit differently than some guys.
Because it's more of a D or G league, like for the NBA.
Because I have this,
I talk to guys the first day of every meeting, I mean, every year.
But, you know, my goal
is to help them achieve what they want to achieve.
And what anybody wants to achieve, whether it's a coach or a player,
to be able to perform at the highest level, which is the NFL.
And so for whatever reason,
these guys are in between there, in between college, NFL.
And the more guys that we can help reach their dreams,
whether it's coaches and players, it's kind of fun to me.
Because in the summertime,
I was going around to different camps and seeing guys.
And I went out to LA, and we've got Amir Speed is here for the Cowboys.
And I'm looking over at the Saints,
and they've got a couple guys that are rostered and guys battling.
They're going on and off of rosters during this time of year.
So for me, that's the big deal for me.
I think to help these guys achieve what they really want to achieve
and, you know, to really help them on a day-to-day basis,
all right, here's where you are, right?
What coach one am I lacking?
How can I get to the next level?
And for me, that's exciting.
You've had such an impressive career
at the college level as a coach, a longtime assistant,
and then notably as a head coach, of course, at Houston.
Six years with A&M, Arizona as well.
um what do you think it would be like being
a head coach in college now as opposed to
during through most of your career
that's probably why i'm doing this right now
i'm gonna be honest with you would you
not want to deal with a lot it's just
it's completely different
and i think you know um i think you've heard uh coaches
that during that era the time Nick Saban being one
of them a couple different guys
Talk about the difference right now, right?
And what NIL has brought to the table
as far as not just the money.
That's not, the issue is not that.
It is the developmental player is becoming few and far between,
where you would sign a high school player and basically redshirt him,
put him on the shelf for three years,
so he would grow into an all-league player.
You don't have time for that anymore.
And I think it's just different for high school players too,
because now because of the situation
with transfer rules, NIL,
you're recruiting the power four conferences are recruiting players
from the G6 leagues.
And instead of a 17 or 18 year old who's never been away from home,
they're recruiting guys
that are already starting development, physically and mentally.
And I think it's kind of hard on high school football right now.
And so for me, I enjoyed recruiting,
I enjoyed relationships with players, getting to know
players, getting to know families,
watching them develop to grow as young men.
And right now, it's kind of hard
because you've got 95 free agents on your team every year.
So you've got to recruit your own players to stay
and then recruit other guys.
So it's twice as hard as it used to be.
And finally, you're one of the few people who can identify
with what Coach Elko is going through at A&M right now.
I'm not going to touch that right now.
They're struggling.
He's calling part of the fan base his best pool
and having to apologize for that.
What's it like to be in the middle
of that storm with a passionate fan base?
Mike's been doing a great job.
And I had a lot of respect
for Mike just last year with the CFP.
And there's going to be times like this.
And I listened to what he said and his apology yesterday.
I mean, that's part of it.
Look, after games, coaches get frustrated too.
Right, and so a lot of times, over time,
I can't tell you, there's plenty of things.
I said, boy, I shouldn't have said that.
And then by the time I get home-
Me too.
By the time I get home, I'm reminded by my kids and my wife.
And then pretty soon, I look up on TV and it's really bad.
So that's gonna happen.
You're frustrated, you wanna win.
um you know i think you know his apology yesterday really spoke
for itself and and uh he understands
and and obviously he knows what it takes to win
because they did last year and um and he'll get
the thing straightened out and get on the right track
and and you know like you said you know
sometimes there's there's things that you say
at the after a game that i've done it plenty of times
and and uh that you're like you know you didn't
really think about saying you just said what was
on your mind and and and you know that's
that's it's like anything else right you know they go
out and win they win this week you know get
a little bit better just like just like in Norman
three weeks ago where everybody was on brand right now he can't
do any wrong we love Brett now so
that's you know this as a coach
and and that's just part of how life really works i imagine
you're uh one thing that that your stress level
right now isn't anywhere as close as it would be
right? Are you enjoying that? I do enjoy it.
It's fun because I get to go to a lot of games
and I get to be a fan. And my wife laughed at me.
We went to maybe one of the first games I went to
after I was done,
went to the national championship in Miami. And I had never,
I mean, in 30 some years,
I didn't even know that they had digital tickets. I mean,
And I didn't know where the tickets, right?
I'm used to just walking, getting the bus,
going to the stadium and coming out.
Get your thing.
Yeah, here, put this on.
I didn't know what to do.
So it was kind of fun, but I've enjoyed it.
You know, I didn't realize how much fun people have tailgating either.
This is great, right?
I mean, it's just, you know, it's a completely different experience.
And I've got, you know, a son who's coaching.
I've got one who's still playing in college.
And so to be able to get around and see my friends,
and watch them be happy or sad, there's
no in between, right?
It's one or the other every week,
and that's part of it, but that's what makes it such
a fun job.
And I know some people say that makes no sense,
but it's a challenge every week, and it's
It's an emotional roller coaster, but like I said,
the growth that you see with young
people that come there as really young adults
and then they leave as men, that's really
what you're in it for.
And all those experiences, good and bad, I think help make you better.
And there's a lot of life lessons in football that are taught
and some of them are learned
the hard way too um and then you know there's
but all that i think helps helps people grow up
and uh deal with adversity because life's life's not always fun
and uh you know how to handle that
and and what it takes to to move on and make a mistake
and own it move on i think that's that's
one of the big lessons in in football well said
by Kevin Sumlin head coach of the Dallas Renegades
of the UFL. Season tickets on sale tomorrow,
ufl.com slash Dallas slash tickets. All the
best, coach. Thanks for all the time.
I appreciate it. Thanks for having me. Looking forward to it.
We're just talking
Mike's talking about a 11-minute throw
for the whole night, so that's fine.
What time is it? This is the last block, right?
We're going to do the poll and then say goodnight
to the folks for now. Looky there, Shotty, still throwing a shot out.
Yeah, we'll see how that changes throughout
the night. Make sure to vote.
We love voting. Which decision maker do you trust more, Shotty or Jerry?
We're back at 1030 with some of the same stuff you just saw,
plus the stars and the maps in action.
