I recently created an alla prima portrait in oil, stepping outside my usual style by mixing colors directly on the panel. It was a liberating experience, and I highly recommend it!
I started with red oxide for dark shapes and titanium white for highlights, laying a strong foundation that I plan to refine later. Blocking in large shadow shapes and incorporating midtones early on helped establish the light and shadow effectively.
Focus on getting the drawing and values right, especially around the eyes, mouth, and lips, which require precision. For hair and the background, keep larger shapes but add darker accents for depth.

I mix ivory black and white for cool tones and use yellow ochre with cadmium red for flesh tones. Beginners should practice sketching before adding color, using reference photos with clear contrasts to guide them. Emulating the old masters can be a valuable learning experience.
I added a cooler background value to enhance the warm tones of the portrait.
