In this video, I draw a portrait of a woman in charcoal. I start with a rough sketch of the big masses. My aim is to block in the big shapes of the head and shoulders quickly using dark and light tones. I focus on the size and composition of the head in the beginning as they are crucial to the drawing. I spend as much time as possible in this stage to make sure the drawing is somewhat correct. I use warm grey-toned paper, which I can use as a skin tone. The big part of the light shape is also an important aspect of the drawing.
