Day 2 of our Canouan trip. We got a weather window light enough to check out Sail Rock off the east coast of Canouan, an incredible variety of reef fish around World's End reef, and a surprise bull shark while night fishing for yellowtail snapper. We ended up at Shenanigans at the Sandy Lane Yacht Club for an epic Caribbean feast with our local catch. This island should be a bucket list destination for all serious fishermen. Enjoy!
So we're taking the boat down, the Bajan boys going to the Grenadines.
We are going to Canouan.
Canouan is a beautiful island in the Grenadines chain just south of
St. Vincent, Mustique, Bequia.
We've got Sail Rock off to the windward side off the east about
four or five miles.
So Canouan we know the the local population
of the island is only about
1800 people full-time and that number goes up to about 3000
when there's workers and
i mean you've only got maybe five
or six guys that fish on the whole island to supply the island and
to sell fish so fishing is not the main thing
in their economy not like it is here in in Barbados
so it's an interesting island because people say that Mustique
which is the one to the north of
it which is the private island is the land
of the millionaires Canouan is the land of the billionaires
where the billionaires leave Mustique to get away
from the millionaires it is not a billionaire
island at all i don't know what the marketing team behind it
is saying but it is it is fully
a Caribbean island it is not a billionaire island they have
a great local population
they have villages they have a big Caribbean vibe
to it there's a few estates in the north
and the south that are pretty grand like on any island
but it is a very quiet peaceful friendly
i would say almost
unchanged part
of the Caribbean calm down
a little bit it's dropping
to about 11
knots right now so this is our window
to get to Sail Rock if we're gonna do it
and we're gonna be looking for those giant yellowtails last night was a
little disappointing we didn't get any
of the big ones that they got the first
night am I where
am I he does not like
the water very weird
for a crab oh these
guys killed the yellowtail here last
night I'm trying to catch a big one like
over six pounds so apparently this is the spot because they were really
chewing yesterday so we're gonna give it
a try we got a simple rig here like three ounces of
lead with a swivel at the top 50 pound fluor
are you on already yeah you're wrong jesus
that a boy four feet of fluoro a uh four odd circle hook
and a mixture of squid and
shark shark look at that jackie just let it go
let's see let's see it yeah maybe three seconds
we didn't even set that hook we just started reeling
because we're using a circle hook
so when the fish bites you just start reeling
and that's what hooks them right in the corner
of the jaw what do we got here look at that turn
to me baby bull baby reef shark we got no use for
him look at that look at the column
though look at all the fish in the column see that yeah cute
photo hand yeah all right buddy back you go how
are you getting them in the boat yesterday just
whipping them in yeah not gas nothing they
were gaffing them i don't know bro if you
walk down with your circle they are never coming off oh jack's on again
that fish yeah
a nice high wow
that's the last head
that's crazy 50
feet of water home
Katie got three
ounces of lead
on there so I
do about four feet of mono
and our four ought circle hook going down with our bait
mix of squid and baby tuna we just had a hell
of a strike on that bait right now
oh yeah little ponies got me in yeah
yeah yeah yeah there we go not huge
yo I caught a monster squirrel fish lovely let's
see it let's see it jack show it jack turn around
one of the spiniest fish in the ocean they
are so hard to take off the hook
without getting poked look at that i used
to think it was a baby beautiful isn't he yeah
got nice white tips on his dorsal spine there
beautiful dorsal pretty okay buddy do not bite
us again the lights finally i just got you just
gotta follow them there we go they're following
the jump there we go hopefully
our jump trails finally attracted them yeah yellowtail there we
Here we go, in the boat, beautiful, tiny one though, wow.
I got, bump.
Oh, oh, take this.
It's a trick.
It's a trick.
No, look, see when the yellow tail swallows it?
Yeah.
Pull the line like this, and you just chip it in the jaw.
See my yellow tail here?
Yeah.
Not a huge one, but now they're finally showing up,
so we're gonna try to get an absolute flag.
Wow, look at the pattern on this guy.
They're almost like whitish camo.
You got just thumped, didn't you, eh?
that all right that's what we came for just
a lot smaller yeah that's about it
that's a mother
for sure yeah still running yeah **** you mean if it's
I don't know if you were going to get up there.
What did I just ******* do?
Stop him, bro.
He has no intention of stopping.
Go bear.
Yo, that fish is...
Yo, what did you...
I don't know.
It was two little tiny bites like a coney,
and then all of a sudden it just...
Mate, I think you low-key have a shark.
Yeah.
Nah, bro.
It's just tail beats.
I'm thinking...
Bring your drag up a little bit.
No, no, no.
no yeah you're gonna have to it's gonna spool you
so you're gonna do it charlie's my god
i can't believe i turned this fish around
this fish won't i think it's a shark the reason i don't
think it's a shark is because it didn't do like the strong like
but he was doing he was doing
what a mahi does with the tail beats
and everything well maybe it's just a 30 pound
mahi i really doubted that fish ran
for two minutes straight it never stopped i had hard
We're lucky we got line on that thing.
Big rod! Big rod!
Shit!
Give me that one!
The big rod just had
a fish on it.
Yeah!
Don't reel us, Brennan.
He just got eaten
and now we're gonna get to it.
I don't have a tight knot rod.
It's not gonna hit.
It's a shark. I got it, I got it, I got it.
Small spool.
I don't know!
Shark totally just spooled that line.
We just got our snapper eaten off.
Here it comes!
Yo, what is that? That's not a shark.
What is it? A grouper?
YESSS!
Oh my god, that's a beast.
You needed your Gaffman for that one, Jack.
That's so funny.
Of course it's Jack's sacred fish.
That's funny!
Oh
my
god.
That hook went through, re-pierced itself,
and it took off for two and a half minutes straight.
This is bad.
That makes a lot of sense now.
Tell me. Tell me it's like a mutton.
Oh yeah, it's a mutton. I got it.
I can be happier.
Wow. Is there more squid?
Jesus, bro. That is actually a GT size, horse size.
Do we have more squid?
That horse ain't got to be 20 pounds.
You want to follow me?
I'm going to be happier. I'm feeling blessed with my big horse.
That shark was big. That just took us up.
Oh yeah. It wasn't stopping, bro.
You were losing all that.
Yeah, but the line was bent so, like...
Yeah.
Massive bro
Yeah monster bro, **** me, don't mess with me
Yo, that is actually a giant horse, yeah? Its dimensions of this
Mood with my horse
Big mood with my horse. I don't own my own horse. Oh my
My god, that is the biggest
I think it's full of chalk, bro.
PBs, PBs, non-stop.
Yo!
Ow!
God.
You idiot!
That looked like it hurt.
Keep in mind they're venomous.
He's bleeding.
Ow!
That was a perfect drop.
Oh my god, we're going in.
**** this.
No.
Adam, you're gonna be...
It's a croc, bro.
I know.
Trust, you're so good.
Okay, look at the size of this.
Can they give me a piece of bigger?
Oh my god.
Colossal. That is the biggest squirrel fish I've ever seen.
And you get to remember it by
slicing
your foot open. Wow.
He's a teeny, teeny yellowtail.
Keep in mind, these are actually a good size.
The hind is still alive.
Yeah, I know. It was trying to bite my foot.
He got you? Yes! I told you!
It's hard to get the spines with a buddy, too.
No wonder your knives are so ******* dull.
Do you guys actually use knives for this?
I don't need
any new beds.
Alright, let's see this operation, you ******* goomba.
Not playing to the camera at all.
Is this a plastic line? What are you using?
Is that a fish? Jack?
What do you got, Jack?
Jackie's on to a shark or something
On the hand line
This is
Whoa
What the ****
Dude look at what you did
Oh my god Jack
Why would you do this
Big move or big move
No
You're also standing in front of every shot
Jack
Dude that's good
You gotta scrub that off, why would you bleed all over the seat?
Just throw it behind.
Look at that, look at that.
Peace.
Look at that.
Oh my, Jesus Christ.
Yeah, let me get a photo of me and Charlie head up.
Come on, Charlie.
Yo, he's burping bro, wait for it.
You're gonna want to get a shot of whatever this is.
I want to record, oh.
No.
Yes.
You're not taking that shark in here, dude.
Yes.
No, I hear her, I tied him up for your rope.
Drag it.
Okay.
Bro, that would feed the fillet, bro.
They haven't left us for years.
Really?
Yeah, we're both sharp and big.
I'm here as a biggie.
Let's do it then.
How are you gonna kill it?
How am I going to kill it?
Yeah.
Well, shoot it.
He's gonna do it with a stick
like he did with that boar.
Jack told me a story about how he tried to hunt a wild boar
with a stick and a rock,
and he got his ass beaten,
and one of his buddies almost had to go to the hospital
because this boar
dumped him and his buddies so badly.
You lost a float, David?
Go ****, bro.
Lose it dude. I ain't losing this bro.
There's a lot of sharks here. Holy ----. Dude, not last night.
Just pull it pull it through here,
pull it through here, pull it through here.
No.
Bro, there's definitely a minute to go.
I'm telling you if you actually like look at it
I'm pretty sure you can get one easy.
400 pound line hooked behind the sole.
If you bring the camera over here we're about to see him.
I've heard that for the last 20 minutes.
Here he comes, here he comes. He's right here.
here and we gotta go this time we're going
to get a shark i see it here we go
holy he's big dude gapping this is just gonna piss him off
I don't want a bull shark dude.
It's full-blown bull shark. How are we bringing that in?
Don't Charlie you're just gonna piss it off you you need
a tail don't do that
He's a huge gap a bull shark, dude
You fight nine millimeters
You're out of your mind, why are we bringing that home?
Shark hang on let me get a video
that on my phone yeah massive bull 150 pound bull shark you want him
Let it go back, watch the knife, you guys just walk
the knife behind you, you're gonna step on it
Okay, you said let it go back, let it go.
Yeah, he said our village will eat it
Okay, so forget it
We got time to clean it though, me and Jack, sure okay.
I'll see you. I'll message you and we're on our way back
Okay
All right, give me some light, just grab his tail, go down
and grab himself in there, so big
Look at that ----, there is a light in the head, that's a ball dude
Watch your hands
Watch your hands
He's trying to eat me, bro.
Me too, man. Just cut the ******* line.
We don't need it.
I got it out.
Okay, now take off the tear wrap.
Look at that beautiful shark, dude.
Take the tear wrap off.
Get this release on film.
I am, yeah.
Did you get all
that on video, Taylor?
Yeah.
I got a good one on my phone, too.
Did you get me holding it and taking the line out of my hand?
Yeah.
Hard serve now. Hard serve.
As if you're turning.
Let the boat turn itself, though.
Get this one off
the floor before you break it.
Rod, don't
step on it.
Yes,
real
hard.
The rumors of the yellowtail on Sailrock are legendary.
So we've got about an eight mile run.
We're going to take it a little slow
because there's still some breakers out here.
As soon as we get there, we're going to troll around it,
mark out the bottom, map it out,
see what's there, see what kind
of structure there is, what's in the column.
Probably going to do some jigging around there
in the 200 to 250 foot range, and then we're
We're gonna anchor and chum up.
Chum up those big ones if we haven't hit any on the troll.
All right, let's get moving.
I bet you if we trolled the planer here in 100 feet,
cause you said it goes down to what, like 70?
Yeah, you'd actually get a grouper.
70, Missouri Diving 15, that puts us right at 90,
right near bottom.
Wind is still pretty rough here.
It's gonna be good.
We're gonna find a little sheltered spot around the island.
Curl or a
barracuda?
Marjac?
I caught two of these on jigs.
There it is, that's
good bait for tomorrow.
Sail Rock has some of the most intense currents
in the Caribbean, if not the world.
Apparently, there's just washing machine whirlwind,
whirlpool currents that rip through there
because you've got the windward, the Atlantic on one side,
and the leeward on the west side.
Look at that current.
Look at that washing machine current.
112 feet right off here.
Look at that, this is like Lord of the Rings.
but you've got the east side and the west side.
And when those two water systems meet,
they create a convection circular like whirlwind current
that rips around the island.
Absolutely insane.
What
was that?
I don't think you can ******* swim here.
It is very, very deep.
You cannot spear fish here if you wanted.
It's super dangerous.
People get stranded there all the time
and end up on Mairu or World's End Reef
or Shoe Reef stranded on rocks
waiting for someone to come pick them up, so.
Yeah, it's no joke out there,
but we're gonna take
it slow and be safe.
I just saw a bunch of fish on the screen and boom.
Yo, that's a good fish.
It looks like a yellowtail.
Yo, Tommy.
This is good sushi right here.
This is premium sushi.
Blue runner?
That is beautiful.
Yeah, little anchor right here.
All right, so we're here, hooked up on a rainbow runner.
Jack, here, come deal with this.
I got a drive.
Sushi fish.
I hope we don't lose it.
Yeah, it does.
Their mouths are very soft.
Nice rainbow runner.
That's a great little jump out of the water.
Whoa, look how pretty he is.
Let's hold him up.
Nice rainbow runner.
Really nice fish.
You don't see them too often, especially
in the trolling lures, but they're really good.
Sushi boy.
That's our bait.
Rainbow runner.
Look at that beautiful blue lateral line
it's got going down at the bottom of its top loin.
These fish are really good sushi,
they're really good on the grill,
and they're really good bait as well.
So we gotta see when we're gonna go deep dropping tomorrow.
That's just nerves going at the end there.
No worries, that's actually what you want.
That means the fish is dying quickly
and it's almost at the end.
And now we can dispatch this fish,
put him on ice, and enjoy it later this evening.
But I do think we might end up using this guy for bait
because they do make great deep drop bait,
especially if you cut the tail off, butterfly it.
Beautiful fish.
Bro, where are these logos at?
We got one.
Can you turn the live well switch on?
Here we are now, anchored on the leeward side of sail rock.
And it's calming down a bit.
Current is absolutely ripping around that corner there.
I've never seen a whirlwind washing machine like that
around just one rock, but wow.
Now we're in about 53, 55 feet of water.
No.
Trying to get some tabbies on the sabiki.
This current is ripping. This is like a four knot current
This is what it was like
That one night. Yeah. Well, that's when they bite.
So you sure it's a fish or I'm on the bottom right here
You're for sure on the bottom right there. Yeah
That
is so
sick
Yeah, I'm telling you you did something wrong yesterday.
You need to repent. I hope
you repented last night do some jigging now around
sail rock in 120 then like 75 on the west side of
it so we're gonna have to go back on the atlantic
that current is just too hard hard to have a jump
sling there's no tabbies
no we don't want that this one might
not be a tabby i hooked it right
on bottom well let's see oh grouper that is
gorgeous let me get this guy in the sun you
You gotta see the pattern on this one.
What is that?
Oh!
Charlie's got a nice hind, too.
Hitting him into the reef.
This little guy.
Oh my god, that is the prettiest coney I've ever seen.
What a gorgeous little coral grouper.
Wow, beautiful reddish body, blue spots,
almost like it's on fire.
That is gorgeous.
How should I get more?
See that?
Let's go back down.
All right, let's see this after the frame bogging, all right?
Jack's got one too there at the front.
This reef is active for sure.
We're getting shallower though, 98 feet now.
Yeah, right
under
the boat.
Good eating, they're just weird to catch for some reason.
Another dead weight fish, yeah.
I know what that's called.
Queen trigger fish.
Look at its air bladder just emptying there, yep.
Just, and look at the jaws, like a parrot fish.
And they're predatory, but they can crush shells,
crustaceans, anything else, just let her go.
Good karma.
Charlie's on!
Yo, a big shark, a huge shark!
Big shark there?
Unbelievable.
Yeah, we gotta cook one of those tonight.
Well, no, we'll do it both, both ways.
Rainbow runner.
Yeah!
Another tabby?
Or my jig flipped.
Yeah!
More tabbies?
Watching them out here.
This is so much fun.
Yeah.
Where are the pliers?
Should be right there.
They were in front of you just now.
Might have dropped.
So now we've pushed past Sail Rock.
We're just trolling the Azuris on our way to World's End
Reef, which is about a quarter of a mile in front of us here.
We're just going over these humps in the middle of this
reef patch here.
There is so much reef between Sail Rock and mainland
Can Juan, it's insane.
And we were doing some jigging around Sail Rock in about 100
feet, got some hinds and other little coral grouper, but not
a whole hell of a lot.
And to be honest, the current was just insane over there.
So we're taking these Azuris over to World's End Reef.
Still looking for that giant yellowtail.
I know he's out here somewhere.
There's an 8 to 10 pound somewhere here.
So we've got a couple more nights here.
We're not giving up until we get one.
Tomorrow will be good too.
But World's End Reef here is going to be sick.
Amazing snorkeling spot.
They shot Pirates of the Caribbean there.
One of them anyways.
Then we're going to go in and whip up some of these rainbow runners.
Shenanigans.
Let's see what's good for the evening.
That was a really good fish.
Yo, yo!
What?
It was just wrapped around the rod tip
and I got a fish and then it popped.
No!
Right there behind the boat.
No!
I look at the rod tip as soon as the line goes.
You lost it?
Yes, the line wrapped around the rod tip.
It's off.
It's off now?
Sometimes there's a piece in there, so keep ripping it.
That's
a good fish.
Let's see it, and then you're lying to me.
Oh no,
I got the tail.
Easy, easy.
There we go.
Easy, bud.
Give me some slack before you get hooked.
Decent size yellowtail.
Nice, this is a nice one to show.
Shit, we gotta get away from the rocks.
As that was happening, I had a red-nosed fish
right there.
I looked at the top.
There we go, trolling world's end.
Got a nice yellowtail, only about two or three pounds.
They get a lot bigger than this, but that's a good sign.
It's fighting on the Yazuri, on the fly lines trolling.
Beautiful fish though. Look at that yellow stripe down its side.
Nice lateral line, yellow spots, big yellow tail.
Pretty obvious why they call these guys what they do.
Dude, that's insane. That was crazy.
Let me do this one. Do you want to drive for a bit?
Sure. Yeah, you want to drive for a bit?
I mean if you want me to. Yeah, sure. Let's do it.
I want a fish.
Do not lose that footage.
Stay in this depth is pretty good.
Yeah, turn right a bit. Are you in a roll?
I'm really in a roll.
Just
stay
in one
of them,
boy.
Serena.
I don't know, but let's go before the sun goes down.
Right here, can you see the fish, like nicely?
Look at that.
All right, we got our nice rainbow runner,
our nice colorful coney,
almost in like tiger fire red orange,
yellow tail snapper, little strawberry grouper.
I'm calling this guy strawberry,
he doesn't look big enough to be a red hind yet.
So let's start with the rainbow runner.
We've never done a rainbow on this channel before.
So what you're gonna see is how beautiful this fish is
when it's cut up because the meat on it
is like halfway between a jack and a tuna.
It's a little reddish, of course the boys didn't bleed it,
so we've got that, but still beautiful looking filet.
Go back on the other side, straight down the backbone.
These fish are so soft, they're kind of like mackerel
in that they don't have tough scales.
Look at that, beautiful fillet.
Now, to skin one of these because their skin is so soft,
like any other jack, basically go straight down to the skin
and then make a 90 degree angle
and let the knife do all the work.
Do not put a lot of pressure on it
so it doesn't go through the back of the skin.
And look, yeah, great, we didn't get any skin,
but they do have one thick bloodline.
Look at that.
So we're gonna trim around that before we cook it.
Better to do that in the kitchen.
Look at that.
Now we got a coral grouper coney fillet.
45 degree angle, up into the head.
Do not go through the backbone.
As soon as we hit the backbone,
we turn our knife 90 degrees
and we go straight down the spine,
straight down the backbone, right out.
Boom.
Look at that.
So a good day to explore Sail Rock.
Actually it was our only day
because it's gonna get too rough the rest of the week,
but for a place none of us have ever fished before,
it was really cool to see.
We got to see a lot of those ripping cross currents
and washing machine-like waves
that are just around the island,
but we did get some good fish jigging.
Got a nice yellowtail, trolled World's End Reef.
Just as good as Grenada.
What do you see there?
A Jack Crevalle.
A Jack Crevalle?
Get it, bud.
That thing was at 20 pounds, bro.
You know, literally.
That's what I was trying to tell you.
Jacob, Jacob, Jacob, Jacob, Jacob.
Yeah, he's right on the bottom.
Drop the jig, bro.
Pass me the jig.
Like, the weight hits the bottom
and the thing floats in the middle of the column
and then it sinks down to the bottom.
It's okay, I don't know how we don't get
hooked in rocks every time.
It's not a jig,
it's a piece of bait.
It's a good size fella, bro.
Yo, I'm warning you, it's half a catfish.
Why?
I'm telling you, brother, all over the *******
catalytic rod
has so many
of them, so does
sail rod.
Okay, so they wouldn't let us into the kitchen here
at Shenanigans, but honestly, we don't really need to
Cause look at this, look at this here guys.
This is fantastic.
Look at the coney.
Look at how much meat we got off this little coney.
This is the coney.
This is why coney is one of my favorite fish.
So this is what you would look,
or this is what you would see as coral trout in Australia.
Basically the same thing.
That right there, beautiful coney.
Let's see.
Oh my God.
That's amazing.
Now, let me show you guys this.
This is the rainbow runner.
So see that?
Very steaky, steaky looking fish.
A lot thicker and firmer than grouper and snapper.
But you know what?
Not bad at all.
For a Jack, not bad at all.
That's in the sauce and the mash, oh my God.
Tastes just like a Jack.
We got a different sauce.
Yeah, they did it unreal here tonight.
Whatever this sauce is.
This is a creamy dill sauce apparently.
Oh, let's see.
With the potato.
Oh my God, all together.
Shenanigans, baby.
Right here, can one.
Fish is super fresh, just got this an hour ago.
Honestly, the red hind and the coney,
best fish on the island.
