5 Powerful Foods for Gut Health, Inflammation & a Healthy Gut-Brain Axis

Better choice for your health

Your gut health plays an important role in digestion, metabolism, immunity, and communication between the gut and brain. A healthy gut is not built through medicines alone—your everyday food choices, physical activity, sleep, hydration, and stress management all matter.
In this video, I discuss 5 powerful foods that can support better gut health, healthy digestion, and overall well-being.
1. Yogurt – A Natural Source of Probiotics
Yogurt can provide beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, depending on the product and cultures used. These probiotics may help support a balanced gut microbiome and healthy digestion. Yogurt is also an excellent source of protein and important nutrients. If you do not enjoy plain yogurt, unsweetened lassi can be another convenient option.
2. Flaxseeds – Fiber + Plant Omega-3s
Flaxseeds are packed with dietary fiber, lignans, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Regular flaxseed intake can support bowel regularity, cardiovascular health, and a healthier gut environment. Ground flaxseed can easily be mixed into yogurt, oats, or other meals.
3. Desi Ghee – Use in Moderation
Desi ghee is a traditional cooking fat containing fat-soluble nutrients and small amounts of short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. It can be included as part of a balanced diet, but because it is rich in saturated fat and calories, portion size matters—especially for people with high LDL cholesterol or cardiovascular risk.
4. Guava – A Fiber & Vitamin C Powerhouse
Guava is an excellent source of dietary fiber and vitamin C. Fiber supports regular bowel movements and provides nourishment for the gut microbiome, while vitamin C contributes to normal immune function and antioxidant protection. When guava is in season, it can be a great addition to a balanced diet.
5. Oats – Powerful Beta-Glucan Fiber
Oats contain beta-glucan, a soluble fiber known for supporting healthy cholesterol levels and metabolic health. This fiber is also fermented by gut bacteria and can contribute to a healthier intestinal environment. Oats can therefore be an excellent breakfast option alongside yogurt, seeds, nuts, or fruit.
But remember: gut health is not about one “miracle” food. A healthy lifestyle works as a complete package. Stay physically active, exercise regularly, drink enough water, eat plenty of fiber-rich whole foods, maintain good sleep habits, and manage chronic stress. If tea or coffee worsens your digestive symptoms, a simple fennel-based herbal drink may be an alternative.
Mental and spiritual well-being also matter. Prayer, gratitude, forgiveness, relaxation, and meaningful social connection can be valuable parts of a healthy stress-management routine.
Build healthier habits every day, take care of your gut, and give your body the nutrition, movement, rest, and peace it needs.
