Hi everybody, I'm Dr. Sarah Gordon of the PhD Journey Unplugged podcast. I have the absolute
honor and privilege to welcome Sherry Kalbaum to my show today. Sherry, welcome. Thank you,
it's an honor to be on your show. I'm excited about our topic because it's a hot one right now.
I am too. And you, just to let my listeners know, you bring decades of knowledge
and experience in nutrition and being a health promotion leader. And you have had
so many opportunities to educate people across the globe. From what I understand,
you've written dozens of books. 36. You're known as the juice lady. We're going to talk about that,
what that means. Yes, go ahead. And you had a very successful book called Juicing for Life.
And that was one of your original books, I believe. It was my first, really, my first
nutrition book and it sold over 2 million copies. And I know it did because it's practical. It's a
practical guide. 50 different ailments are covered and I researched the nutrients, the vegetables
highest in those nutrients, and then created recipes around that. So each section from acne
to cancer to diabetes to heart disease and wound healing, all of this is based on research and
then a few traditional remedies thrown in. But it wasn't just my good ideas or thinking this
could work. And I know that's why it took off because people use it as a reference and
people have used it year after year. People have shown me their tattered books that are just
falling apart and earmarked and chapters flagged because you can look up a headache or a cold or
whatever is ailing you that day and find your program and your plan for that condition.
Yeah. And I like to explain to my listeners, I always have a phone call with my guests ahead
of time just to get to know them, make sure it feels like a good fit for both of us. And
what you, what impressed me about our conversation is when we're going to talk, we're going to really
dig into this throughout our conversation. But, you know, there's an impression when we talk
about juicing, there's a lot of sugar in it and it's fruit juices. But what you had explained to
me is an 80-20 kind of a philosophy where it's 80% vegetable, vegetables. So that when we talk
about juicing, I just want to say this off the bat, like, you know, right from the beginning,
we're really talking mostly about vegetables. We are. And many health professionals, many doctors
say, oh, don't juice. It's got way too much sugar. But they're thinking about a glass of like
orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, and so forth, just all fruit. And yes, that for many
people is way too much sugar. Not everybody. There's people that are fine with drinking a
big glass of orange juice, but a lot of people are not. And even carrot juice all by itself can be
too much sugar because it's a high sugar vegetable. And so when you get 80% veggies, 20% fruit,
now you've got a much better balance that's not going to trigger these blood sugar issues
of spikes and dips and pre-diabetes and diabetes. People really need to be cognizant of that. And so
some people are even so sugar-sensitive, they have to go more 90-10. You know, maybe half an apple
and green apple at that, which is lower in sugar, and then all the rest vegetables
and include a lot more greens than you do the others.
Just like what you just said, I have so many questions, but I just kind of, I'm going to try
to keep myself to, you know, organized so I don't throw all these kinds of things at you. But
just to continue to introduce you, I know you've been on thousands of radio shows,
you've been on live TV, been on the major broadcast networks. So, you know, your voice
is a very well-respected voice. And I just want my listeners to understand the caliber of an
individual that you are in terms of your influence in the nutrition space. And so really honored to
have you today, quite frankly. Thank you so much. Great to be here. I also want to mention that you
have a new book out, and we're going to talk about this as well, about seed oils. It's called
The Truth About Seed Oils. There it is. And I, you know, when we were on the phone call together,
I mean, it was quite clear to me the research that you've, you know, brought into the book
and understanding it and teaching and educating people. And I feel like you might be pushing
against maybe some mainstream thinking. And so I'm okay with you sharing your perspective if
you want to challenge what people think about industrial oils and seed oils and to just to
educate us, because this platform is really to help people live their best lives. I always say,
you know, emotionally, mentally, physically, or nutrition. So we're just going to have an honest
conversation and learn from you. Thank you. Oh, that is great. And you're right. There are two
sides to this argument or this coin, whatever you want to say right now. So I want to just start
with a premise, always follow the money. I had a professor say that early on when I started working
on my graduate degree, follow the money, because it influences studies, it influences what is
promoted in the media. Seed oil industry is a big business. It is projected to be 80 billion,
no, 600 billion, excuse me, by 2031. So that's a lot of money and a lot of money to fight over.
And so you're going to hear the opposite side, because it is a hot topic. And a lot of people
are saying avoid those toxic seed oils, which are used everywhere. And I should name them. Soy,
corn, and canola are the top three that you're going to see in so many places from fast food
restaurants, your local restaurant down the street, to packaged food, all sorts of packaged foods.
And so then the others, some of them call them the hateful eight plus one, but the others are
safflower and sunflower, grapeseed oil, rice bran, cottonseed, and peanut oil. Those are the ones to
avoid. And here are the good ones, because we always want to know, oh, I can't have that. What
can I have? Olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil. Those are your good oils. Also ghee. Some
people call it oil of butter. It's clarified butter. And then some of the animal fats that
we were told were so bad for us are actually good. And beef tallow is one with a high smoke point.
That's something to remember, because if it's high, there aren't too many oils or fats that
are high. If it isn't, and you're doing deep fat frying or just frying higher heat, it's going to
denature very quickly and turn toxic. So beef tallow is being used now by a few restaurants
like Steak and Shake. Just last year switched out their frying oil and went to beef tallow.
And there are numerous other restaurants that are following in their footsteps and doing the same.
So now you'll see more often popping up, like at even Costco and other big box stores,
chips cooked in beef tallow, or maybe beef tallow used for something else. Or you're seeing more
avocado oil. I was just at Costco the other day, and I saw avocado oil chips and popcorn
in crackers and mayonnaise or avocado oil being used for those products. So look for that when
you shop. It's so easy. And usually it's no more money these days, because I'm comparing prices,
and it's no more money than getting the other inferior product. But let me go into why it's
so toxic, because people do have questions like, why? Why is it considered toxic? So there are
two reasons. First of all, it's how it's manufactured at high heat, very high heat,
like about 500 degrees is where they start, with these little fragile seeds that are composed
primarily of polyunsaturated fatty acid or linoleic acid, and heat destroys them. It creates
toxic byproduct just with the heat alone, but it doesn't stop there. They put in hexane, which is a
very toxic chemical, to extract more oil. And then they use deodorizers, neutralizers, bleaching
agents, other chemicals. Sometimes maybe a dozen or more chemicals are going in there. And then
finally, out pours a clear, odorless, tasteless oil that people take home to cook their food in,
like canola oil is a very popular one, because for a long time, you know, we were told it was
healthy. That was the other one. I know. And grape seed oil. That was the other one. And in fact,
I even promoted grape seed oil for a number of years before I knew any better, because we were
all told that was an excellent oil, or we were told safflower or sunflower were excellent oils.
If these oils were processed in the old-fashioned way, more of the pressing like they do olive
or the flesh of avocado, it would be a whole lot better for us. But it's not. It's industrially,
industrial processing. And so that is creating things like aldehydes and lipid peroxides,
which are very toxic and damage cells. And so we're starting off with very toxic, rancid,
often people refer to them as rancid oils, but they're so processed, you don't smell it. But
sometimes you do. Sometimes you smell or taste, boy, it's really old then. But then there's
another reason. Because these oils are high in linoleic acid, and this is what the other side
of the coin is saying, oh, you need linoleic acid. It's very good for you. It's an essential
oil. It's true. It is, but not in the amount, not the form or the amount that we're getting it.
So it should not be in a toxic form. And it should not be in the huge abundance that Americans are
eating this omega-6 oil. So why are we eating so much breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a lot of
people? It's in baked goods, breads, the bagels, even alternative plant milk. Some of them have
these seed oils like oat milk or almond milk, not all of them, but some. And then from lunch and
dinner, from salad dressings to pizza to burgers to fries that are cooked in these bad oils,
oftentimes people are eating out for their lunch. And then dinner, same thing, a lot of seed oils,
whether they're popping something in the microwave or you've got a takeout, oftentimes it will be
loaded with seed oils. And so we're getting them in a ratio that's way out of range,
like tipped like this, 20 or 30 to one omega-3 fatty acid. We should be on a scale of four to
one maximum. And so we're way, way out of range. And a lot of people now are getting tested for
their omega-6 to omega-3 ratios because a lot of alternative health professionals,
integrative medicine doctors are testing people and finding they're hugely out of range,
20 to 30 to one. And so what does that do? That also creates inflammation. And I didn't say it
earlier, but these toxic oils, just from how they're manufactured, create inflammation.
And then too much omega-6, too much linoleic acid, which is the omega-6, is creating inflammation.
So we have a double whammy and people are inflamed.
I hear that often about inflammation. And I'm so glad we kind of just dived. I mean,
I was going to wait a little bit to get to seed oils, but it's fine because I think it's important.
You're passionate about it and we'll come back to it again. But I mean, there's so much information
coming at us from so many different directions. And honestly, I never really thought about all
the oil and everything because sometimes you trust the marketing on the product.
And so let's just start with seed oils now since you started talking about that. But I just want
to make sure because I don't want to miss this little detail about you, okay? Did you work along
George Foreman and the George Foreman Grill? Yes, I did. I was his nutritionist and the other
spokesperson for the grills. So I was in the first three infomercials and then on QVC for 13
years with the grill representing it there. I just felt like I just wanted to slip that in before we
keep going on because I thought that was really a fun piece of information. And then I also noticed
when I was kind of studying your background and your experience that you practiced as a
clinical nutritionist at St. Luke's Medical Center in Bellevue, Washington? I did. And that's
where I first did my internship and practiced there for a while until I went to work with the
Juiceman company as their nutritionist and spokesperson for the Juiceman juicer. And
that just took me out on the road a lot and doing big seminars. So that was a very fun time.
And I think it's important to just kind of put those in right now because as we continue to
talk about nutrition and learn from you, I just want my audience to understand like you really
know what you're talking about. Now it's up to each individual to make the choices for their own lives
and to go out there and to research and to study and you know learn for themselves. But I
just want them to understand that we have like you know truly an expert on the show. So thank you.
You're welcome. Okay, so let's do this before we actually before we go a little bit deeper into
if it's okay. I would like to back up and talk about your life because we I know a little bit
about it from our phone call and your mom getting sick and your journey through your your health
and all these moments in your life that kind of set this path for you I believe right to where
you are today. So if you're comfortable I would really appreciate you sharing with our audience
because I think when we are vulnerable and we share our stories because I've done it on past
episodes in terms of my my story in terms of overcoming hard things in my life then people
we realize we're more alike than not and then I truly believe we're able to help each other.
I think that we all are hopefully trying to live our best lives and so let's learn from each other
learn from our experiences and learn from the knowledge that we pick up along the journeys.
So go ahead and feel free to share as far back as you would like and as much as you would like.
Oh well thank you. I love sharing my story and I have a number of stories that I share from time
to time. I do that for many reasons. First of all it gives people hope because when I know for me
when I hear someone's story that's similar to something I've experienced in their way ahead
they're there on the other side they they have overcome you know and they have now come to a
place of living a good life of the best life the best life now. I think there's a show or a book
by that title but my story is one of redemption and it started with my mother dying of cancer
when I was six years old and that was a tragic event and I lived with my grandparents and my
father. My grandfather died when I was nine and that was another tragedy and and on it went and
until I got into my 20s and I got really sick. I had chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
so badly that I couldn't work. I had to move home. I slept about 12 hours a day and wake up tired
and ache all over and I always felt like I had the flu. I had a low-grade fever all the time which
is just horrible when it never goes away. It's like a nightmare and I was so hopeless because
no doctor knew what to do to help me and they still don't about those conditions. They manage
try to manage with drugs but people don't get better. So many people have talked to me they
don't get any better. They get worse year by year. So I was young, single, my whole life ahead and I
thought I've got to do something to get out of this hole because they're not going to help me
so I've got to help myself. I've got to find a way out of this and I prayed a lot, went to health
food stores, talked to some people there. They did have some answers and referred me to a couple
of old books that I read from cover to cover over and over again looking for answers but
I discovered that my diet was all wrong. I loved junk food and fast food. I was a sugar addict. I
hated vegetables. No wonder I was sick and then I had the emotional traumas of losses in my life
from early on and so I began a journey and I learned about juicing. I bought my first juicer. I
did a five-day vegetable juice fast. On day five my body expelled a tumor this size, the size of a
golf ball. It had blue blood vessels about four or five of them attached that looked like somebody
cut them and something had. You call it god scissors. There are some phytonutrients in numerous
vegetables that are shown in scientific studies to cut off angiogenesis which is the term for
the growth of blood vessels to tumors to feed them and I saw that before my very eyes. It was like
wow. I didn't know. It was like a lab experiment. Later you know a few years later I go back to
school and get my degree but at the time I didn't know what I was looking at but I know that I was
following in my mother's footsteps and I'm quite convinced I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't
pursued the path I did so I thought okay tomorrow I'm gonna wake up well right got rid of this thing
that's the western thinking you do this and this and you cure yourself and you get rid of whatever
and you go on with your life. Quick results. Yeah. Quick fix. Quick fix. I didn't wake up the next
morning feeling fabulous. I was on a journey and I encourage everyone who is not well but you've
embarked on your journey don't give up because the daylight is coming. The turn is coming but
oftentimes it takes a while because our cells are turning over. We're getting rid of toxins. We're
cleansing our body. We're renewing at the cellular level and so that's a turnover and this is a big
ship and we're trying to turn it and does not turn on a dime and so oftentimes though people
will tell me they're feeling better. They'll have good days and they'll get better and better.
Some people get a little worse before they get a little better. Whatever is going on with you
don't give up when you're doing the right thing. So I thought okay even though I didn't feel better
I'm going to keep with this program because I got some good results back here. So I kept juicing. I
included a plant-based diet. I do add some animal protein now into my diet but then I went plant
based mostly for that summer. One day I did wake up feeling brand new. It was like I got a new body
last night. I felt like jogging. I hadn't even felt like walking around the block before that
and so then I called that the best cure on earth. It was like wow this was amazing. I was ready to
go back. Went back to Southern California. My friends going back to school and I thought okay
I can just join in with them. They're going out for pizza or burgers cheeseburgers and fries or
fried chicken whatever and I realized I couldn't do this. My symptoms started coming back.
Wow. That's when it dawned on me oh this has got to be a way of life. So you've got to find a way
to make this work. Go out with friends and order something better than they're ordering but still
have fun and then how to plan out my daily living and so that's when I made the decision to go back
to school. Get a graduate degree in whole foods nutrition so I could be a credible source of
information and a teacher for those that do long for a better path and there is one out there.
Anybody that's listening if you're suffering there is a better path but your conventional
doctor may not tell you about it. Probably won't because they haven't been trained in nutrition.
Such a strong statement. So many strong statements.
Yeah so we are the master of our ship right? It's up to us to make the right choices or to
find the right path. Sometimes we have to do some digging but that's why I've written 36 books so
that I have lots of meal plans, lots of recipes, lots of tips and so there is a lot of great hope
and inspiration and practical guides. So even in my book The Truth About Seed Oils I've got
a lot of recipes. I've got a wise shopping guide in the back and information to get you going. I
how to even choose the best oils for different recipes, the smoke point chart, which oils are
best to cook, which types of food and which kind of heat you'll be using and then on my website
we ran out of room to fit it into our book. I've got the 21 day meal plan and it's on my landing
page the truthaboutseedoils.com and if you just sign up there you can get the meal plan which will
give you 21 days of ideas and recipes to get you going on your path to rejuvenation. Let me ask you
this question and at the end of this podcast episode we're going to share all your help that
people can reach out to you and and on the website you just referenced. So your mom had breast cancer
what 30 40 years ago? Yeah. Okay. I just yeah 50 50 and I just found out a friend of mine just a
few weeks ago has breast cancer and I hear people oh I just got a text earlier today my friend's
husband's cells growth again like why haven't we made more progress all those years we're still
struggling with these things is is this a big part of that conversation are you would you be
let me reframe this question let me let me just keep it open-ended let you answer it the way in
all your knowledge because I don't know that we're making I mean I know we're making strides
but we're still greatly impacted by these cancers we are and I am alarmed we're seeing
more and more people being diagnosed with cancer and they're calling them the turbo cancers they're
like suddenly appearing at a stage three or four it wasn't like you were at stage one or two and
you could you know just start doing something quickly and eradicate it or get it or have an
operation neither coming in at three or four stage and scaring the daylights out of people and
what is going on you're right and why haven't we cured cancer with all of our money and there's a
lot of money poured after it poured into it into research we're still at the big three
surgery radiation or chemotherapy the chemicals pretty much and for some it works for a lot it
doesn't and why haven't we gone beyond I go back to again one of my early days in school and a
professor wrote on the blackboard you won't see a cure for cancer probably in your lifetime
because more people are employed in the business than even have cancer and it's economically not
feasible our country would do a flip I mean economically it would crash wow I did not want
to hear that but I I do believe that there are cures for cancer we just don't know exactly what
they are I do want to talk about my husband's journey was it three years ago he was diagnosed
with a fast-growing aggressive little tumor in his bladder and prior to that he'd had some growths but
they called them nuisance they were low grade and just called nuisance and then we had to have our
kitchen totally redone because of a leak they gutted the whole thing out and we had to eat out
for five months and we did the best we could but I wasn't able to make all my juices and and and feed
him like I normally did I normally had organic meals for us and lots of juices and smoothies and
shakes and all sorts of good things and and I had no kitchen at all the only thing in it was a
refrigerator so we were trying to get juices occasionally from juice bars but eating out and
I'm just convinced that that's where this tumor cropped up as it did so I said okay we're going
to Mexico and we're going to Oasis of Hope Hospital which is a natural and lots of alternative
treatments and a great organic diet while you're there and everything was just what I believed
would be the ticket for him and sure enough it was in three months he was pronounced cancer-free
and tumor-free so I believe that there are alternatives that are powerful I met numerous
people there that had been through the program and were back for follow-ups and numerous ones
were cancer-free but they're they're on their journey and they're sticking with it and they're
going back you know every few months for additional treatments but they had been I want to say cured
and they were on their journey of maintaining and making sure their cancer didn't come back
so that was very encouraging even to meet those people there there are alternative treatments that
are not legal in the U.S. and that is really a sad part too because you have to pay out of pocket
and we did and it was not it was expensive but we said what are you worth what is what is your life
what is your health worth and so we were absolutely ready to make that investment
but not everybody can and so we need reforms for sure in this country sometimes I just have to let
it all set for a second because there's so much wisdom and everything that you just shared with
us so let's bring it back to then nutrition and juicing and everything you know about
juicing the 80-20 or 90-10 depending on person's needs the oils the seed oils like
let's just unpack it a little bit for our listeners like where do you start where do
you start with it all what's what's like one that first step right right because I don't want you
I don't want my listeners to be so overwhelmed you know we got these this ominous thing cancer
and that's just one one chronic illness there's lots of illnesses out there that we have to
try to overcome Alzheimer's and metabolic diseases and osteoarthritis and you know there's
Parkinson's there's just a neurodegenerative disorders there's just so much out there
right so it almost feels like we can never overcome it all but I think for me you know I
know physical activity I know when we talked on the phone you have a lap pool in your backyard
and you swim you swim daily I believe yeah physical activity is a huge part of your life
so let's let's just unpack it a little bit and give people like how do you start you know where
do you start taking that first step so many people ask that and I don't want anyone listening to feel
overwhelmed so you pick one place and you say where do I want to start do I want to start by juicing
um I would say that's an excellent place to start because it's the juices are broken down so well
that they're getting right into your system and helping you at the cellular level and so many
people tell me can I say one thing can I say one thing I love I love that you you've said it a
couple times and I just kind of I want I just want you to talk because you have so much knowledge
but and I've said it on my show in the past like Pete I want people understand like think
about your body on the cellular level you've said it a couple times if anything through my show
I always say strength for the journey within meaning that we have the power within us to make
these changes but it also means physiologically like to consider what's going on inside your body
and how we're making these changes on the cellular level and how we have some control over that by
what we put in our mouth how we exercise how we manage stress how we sleep all these good habits
so I just want to say like that I love that you understand that I get it happy cells happy life
it is at the cellular level and they make up us we are many many many many I don't know how many
cells in our bodies and we must feed them properly and help them to excrete toxins properly
so juicing can be a powerhouse in your life one glass of juice a day this is my motto can
change your life literally can you describe juice though what because I just want to make sure again
people understand you're not saying all fruit juices can you describe what that might look like
well I made a juice this morning so I had a one small bunch of celery this was for my husband and
I a chunk of ginger root ginger is an anti-inflammatory it's rich in zinc it's wonderful
to include in all of your juices and add some spice hopefully you like spice a little bit
I had part of a fennel bulb I just cut it in half and I had a small cucumber that I put in there
I'd used up all my carrots I use you usually use a couple of carrots two or three carrots
but I didn't have any today I had limes and lime juice is really lovely with your vegetable juices
or lemon juice it's surprising how much it perks up the juice and adds flavor I don't
add apple to mine I'm in a category even tighter than 90 10 I have to really watch my sugars and
I've learned that over years of experimenting so that was our juice this morning and I did
pour that juice then in a blender and added an avocado so we had a green a very green smoothie
this morning so I do different juices from at different times you can do carrot apple ginger
which is a lovely base delicious to that you can add some green leaves you can add a couple
ribs of celery a little chunk of fennel whatever you would like to do and change it up and do a
variety of things don't just get stuck on one thing because the more variety of nutrients we're
getting in our diet the better we are there is even a study I found on synergy talking about
nutrients working together how they combine how they link up how together they are so much more
effective in producing different reactions in our body that maybe a certain reaction can't take
place because we're missing something maybe you're missing magnesium for example so that's where
variety comes in and so I just encourage you to jump in and if you're looking for a juicer I
recommend the Nama J2 because you don't have to stand there in the notes you have one no I said
I'll put it in the notes for my audience you don't have to stand there with a plunger and pushing the
produce through you put your produce in the upper chamber and turn on the juicer and you can walk
away and clean your kitchen make food whatever you want to do it juices for you so it's a big
time saver it's easy to clean use my code juice lady and you get 10 off 60 off so that's very
helpful but it you know if you can't start there if you say oh I don't want a juice or I can't
afford a juice or whatever start with do you eat processed food and can you remove that you know
do you love the snack foods the junk foods do you eat out a lot could you switch that up and go with
more whole foods what are your snacks what are your go-to's do you have things in bags with
chemicals could you instead switch it up and make your own organic popcorn for a snack where you use
sea salt which is so much better than table salt which is considered toxic and you could drizzle
olive oil over it or I love a combo of melted coconut oil and butter and drizzle that over my
popcorn what kind of crackers do you buy do you buy organic do you buy crackers with seed oil in
them start looking at labels and switching up your oils what oil do you cook with that's an easy
switch up cleaning out your pantry do you have a jar of corn oil or canola oil on your shelf
maybe you could ditch that and go for olive oil or avocado oil or coconut oil so maybe start
looking at your oils and and then eating out do you choose fast food restaurant stuff fries that
are cooked in toxic oil which is so bad for the system so maybe eating out you can make different
choices I know that people love their burgers and fries but maybe you could switch that up
more often than not and choose things that are grilled or baked or a main course salad
you can also get the app from seed oil scout they have a free trial that's also on my landing page
you'll have that and download that app it'll show you restaurants around where you live
that are seed oil free use just avocado oil or olive oil or coconut oil or beef tallow
so that's another good one and you can start choosing if you eat out a lot
restaurants around you that are seed oil free just listening to you here's the thought that I have I
you know we became a fast food culture which taught us not to be very mindful about our
nutrition we became a convenience food man you know food manufacturers made it all about
convenience which made us not very mindful about what we were eating right we were on the
fast track like grab and go and microwave it and go through drive-through and all of that
it equals fast fast consumption efficiency and I know we're all busy I get it everybody's busy
everybody I know has a full plate I don't know anybody who doesn't say to me they have a full
plate you know if you're able to have a full plate I understand people have different challenges
but I think what you're saying and what we're trying to teach today and this is just for overall
health health promotion wellness living a quality life doing things in your life that you enjoy is
is to slow down and be mindful about the things that we are putting in our mouth the things that
we're watching on tv the activities that we're doing and just being much more intentional about
our lives now I talk about self-determination theory on this show a lot it's a theoretical
framework that my dissertation research was grounded in it's um the theoretical framework
that this podcast is is framed within and and what self-determination theory and if you don't
mind for me to just talk about it for a second what it teaches us is that when we have these
three basic psychological needs when we strive to meet them the need of autonomy
competence and relatedness autonomy is taking actions to take control of your health to take
control of your life to do things in your life that you enjoy to put things in your life that
help you live a healthy life okay to whatever it is we're all different in terms of what the
decisions we have to make in our lives but it's it's the it's the theory that we have some
internal some intrinsic motivation to make those decisions for our lives that we're not just
sitting there and other people telling us how to live so when you have that and you have competence
when you learn how to you learn things you're teaching us we're learning we can learn to be
more confident in our nutrition we can learn the value of seed oils and we can we can learn these
things and then social connections and relatedness we have all these things we we are more likely to
thrive and to live quality of life quality lives and that's the ultimate goal is to to have healthy
enjoyable and long lives so you are a very self-determined individual and i love to have
those types of people on my show to teach us all you know how to do that and so thank you for that
and i don't know if you knew that about yourself but now you do
that's the theory now you know i'm a theorist so there you go
thank you no but you are because you made the decision years ago that you wanted to feel better
and you saw you know what cancer did in terms of you know losing somebody you loved and so
you know we it there's so much about life that's random we cannot control and so if we can control
some of these things that you're teaching us about in terms of nutrition and and um and juicing
and and looking at labels and ingredients you know just slow down a little bit to understand it all
and i'm believe me i am i this is my weak link so i am learning from you you know i'm a grab and go
person and i i need to learn too so i i am not suggesting that i i know all this stuff so i'm
grateful to have you and to learn from you i do want to ask you this question i feel like
if you're list if somebody's listening to us and they know we're i want to go keep you too long
what what do you say to people who say to you well okay you put all those vegetables in your
juice this morning or your smoothie but you should be eating the real the dense the food
well you need to do both and that is the argument out there well they say juice has no fiber
oh well that's not true it has soluble fiber which is excellent for the gut the insoluble
is extracted so you need to have a high fiber diet on most days if you're doing a short juice fast
don't worry about it a few days no big deal but overall you need a high fiber diet and so that's
getting more vegetables in your diet maybe you have steamed broccoli that's a very high fiber
vegetable or cauliflower brussels sprouts those are really high fiber vegetables or maybe you do
a main course salad for dinner or or you eat whole grains that more of the ancient grains that are
high in fiber but make sure that you're thinking about fiber because it is very very important for
your gut your juice is not meant for fiber its goal is to give you all this complement of
nutrients vitamins minerals enzymes bio photons phytonutrients antioxidants the nutrients that
we are so deficient in many times it's going to help replenish our bodies and many of those
phytonutrients they're still discovering new names pop up every once in a while so there are
things in our vegetables and fruit that we don't even know yet what is all there it has not been
isolated you can't just pop a pill and get everything but you can drink a big glass of
juice and go wow i feel different out you know maybe 30 minutes after that i feel different
so it is excellent to add to your diet as a wonderful addition to a healthy choice and it
is fast it is a fast food you can juice it up as you're thinking that i was thinking because because
some of you know we do live fast but i think the challenge would be in planning and prepping
prepping and planning and having it ready in your refrigerator yes planning yes it is
for everything right be it a success prepare prepare today for for who you'll be tomorrow
what you'll have tomorrow definitely and so as you prepare your body today it's the body you'll have
tomorrow but you know i love what you said about grab and go do you know it started way back in the
50s with the tv dinners and women were told they were too busy to make dinner for their family and
most women were not working outside the home then but all this advertising came out and of course
tvs were just coming on the scene and and the ads were hitting the american family and women were
told you're you're too busy you don't have time to make a nice dinner for your family get these tv
dinners pop them in the oven and you'll have dinner all made for your family and america bought
into it women bought into it and they weren't that busy then compared to now um and it is said that if
it wasn't for julia child who had her cooking show come on the air then we probably would have just
been a lost generation today as far as making food but we're still fairly lost and we do want to just
rip open boxes and packages and pop it in the microwave and eat something instant or go through
the drive-through and this is not contributing at all to our health what if we put in our car
week by week inferior fuel what if you put in diesel into a regular tank you know what would
happen well we're putting inferior fuel right yeah it's gonna break down you have given us
a lot to think about i think the next best step for my audience who people who are truly interested
is to um go to your website and we're going to give the addresses again and and and learn and
read and read for yourself and learn for yourself and um there's plenty of people out there in all
different spaces that want to help other people so you know don't i always say there's um strength
in asking for help so you don't need to necessarily go at these things on your own
um if you feel like you need you know somebody to to kind of you know lay out the steps for you
um let's give them your go ahead and give them your your websites i think there's two right
i have two um deuce lady info info is my major dot com is my major website and then the landing
page for the seed oils is the truth about seed oils dot com but if you just get to the main one
you're you're there you're home free uh juice lady info dot com and i have a number of free
gifts there ebook the seven anti-inflammatory juices if you want to sign up for my newsletter
free ebook get my newsletter i send it out twice a week and i always have tips or events coming up
or recipes ideas that you can apply to make your life healthier i have a retreat a wellness retreat
juice and raw foods coming up next year in april i would love to have you join me so you can find
out more about that and follow me on social media at juice lady sherry c-h-e-r-i-e you have such a
i just don't want to keep you too long because i like i have so many questions and
it there's just so much to learn and i think the key is just to start with small steps like
and you gave us so many thank you for giving us so much you know complimentary information
i mean you said it like just make small changes you know look in your pantry look in your
refrigerator um and just and and start somewhere um let me ask you this one kind of final question
i believe or not we're coming up close to an hour already so well actually can i ask you too
because i have one signature question at the end okay so my first question would be
everything you know um there's so much information now and tiktok and social media
and there's people putting on information they're not qualified to put out information
and you have in your background is in nutrition you have a graduate education in it
and clinical nutrition i mean how do we how do we make sense of it all how do we sort through
it all i just feel like there's we're just in information overload so how would we sort through
it all really what would be maybe red flags maybe that's a good way to say it you know
yes and there there are red flags and you're right there there's uh competing points of view
like with the seed oils and this site's going to say oh don't worry about the seed oils they're
fine you need linoleic acid it's good for you and and the average person doesn't even have a
background in which to weigh all of this but maybe somewhere in your gut something's saying to you
this doesn't seem right or it doesn't seem true but if you can follow somebody that is a good
teacher and and even just tune in once in a while or or read a book that is going to give you some
foundation in this area you'll begin to understand uh these sound bites that are showing up all over
the place on instagram and tiktok 60 seconds 90 seconds and people are going ah you know this is
just so confusing and i don't know what to believe so um if you can read a little bit and delve in
yourself and get some foundation on which to weigh all this stuff uh it'll be very very helpful and
you'll benefit that's what i want i want you to benefit and your health to benefit
yeah and i also think it's important um to understand that and you said it in the very
beginning that you you really didn't succumb to peer pressure you kind of went into the situation
and said i want to make the healthiest decision i can regardless of what my friends are doing so
if you're like the first person in your family or in your friends and you you want to make these
changes like via trendsetter yes i love it via trendsetter and there may be good health
yes i have a good response for you because when i discovered that sugar is deadly for me it's
like poison i started seeing it as poison i haven't had dessert in decades um and people
would try to persuade me oh you know this party your birthday their birthday just have a few bites
a little piece of whatever and i finally had to say i'm allergic to that i can't eat it and people
understand allergy alone when you say that right they leave you alone so there you go whatever it
is that you don't want just say you're allergic to it because you know what you're not lying
you are if you get an adverse reaction you don't feel your greatest you're allergic to it on some
level uh it's not going to be an allergy that closes your airways and kills you but you're
allergic to it so you're not lying just tell them that and they'll leave you alone and then you can
just go and make your decisions that you are yourself great advice all right i have a signature
question i usually i i like to ask it a lot of times in terms of like um human performance in
terms of like athletics and endurance strength and endurance and multi-sport world i had a lot of
guests on my show in that world because that's really where my dissertation research was
focused but i think that i think you can answer it from your perspective and it'll be interesting
to hear you answer it and you can answer it in any way you would like literally figuratively
you know however you want okay okay ready sherry i hope so
all right sherry what are we training for oh i have chills when you say that because i am
training for something and we all are we're on this earth for a purpose each of us has a purpose
it's a reason our unique reason that we came to this earth and i am training to finish that purpose
that course that goal um and i want to run my race till the end and i want to die with my
running shoes on so to speak i used to say my high heels but i'll say my running shoes because
we're into sports these days but i don't want to be knocked off course and and out of commission
because i didn't do my part to care for the body i was given i get one for this journey of life
and it's my responsibility to care for it and to tend to it well and i want to complete my journey
and finish it well my husband and i talk a lot he's a psychotherapist and a priest and behavioral
medicine uh consultant and we talk a lot about finishing well that's what it's all about that's
our goal we keep it in mind every day it's it's part of our our mindset of we want to finish well
and we want to help everyone around us that we influence to finish well so that's the end game
that's the race i'm on we're all on it a lot of people just don't know they're on it a lot of
people are confused who am i what is my purpose that's a class that my husband teaches don't know
who they are don't know what their purpose is don't know why they're here and so it's easy easy
to get knocked off course when you don't know that and sit on your couch and eat you know cookies or
junk food whatever because you're just frustrated but it's important to know why are you here what
is your purpose what is my purpose it was so important for me to know that once i knew my
purpose i thought okay i'm going for it and i'm going to stay on track and fulfill my purpose
till i reach the end there you have it it was i knew this was going to be a great conversation
there's so much more i think i could ask you and uh so much more we can learn but you know what
now we need to do the work ourselves and go seek the information and the knowledge and to grow and
to learn and i really appreciate your time i appreciate that you are bold enough to say things
that maybe you know as far as i'm i'm at a little bit of a loss of how to say that um just saying
the truth about things you know in terms of you know pushing back against um you know mass
marketing and um and thinking for ourselves thinking for ourselves i always say strength
for the journey within so which means that we have the you know we have the control to make
the decisions for our lives each and every day thank you so much for being on the phd journey
unplugged podcast it absolutely is a journey and i'm grateful to have had you as part of that
journey with us i you're welcome to come back and continue to teach us and share with us
all the good things that you're doing out there in the world so thank you so much for all of that
thank you i love that i i'll be back i would love to come back we'll just dive into something new
yeah maybe we just unpack it and we just really like because i i kind of wanted to talk about like
how processing the oils are processed but you touched on it in the beginning
it's a lot of information i think it's most likely it's in the book um we can go and look
for ourselves and look it up um but i know there's differences between cold pressed and
hard pressed like i don't want to say that wrong but there's you know the industrial
how all this food is processed you know we need to think it's not you know the
the the outcome like the healthy juices that's the outcome but we have to think about the process
of how all this stuff is made to everything yes there's a lot to consider but once you get on the
path and you start learning then it's it's not so hard you know what choices to make and you get the
payoff when you get the payoff it's so worth it you want to keep going it's like oh i feel so much
better more energy i sleep better i think better it's like okay i'm gonna stick with this path
one step at a time everybody one day at a time live our best lives
thank you so much for joining us today bye-bye everybody
