Are Starship's heat shield problems finally solved?

Elon Musk says YES.

That's a bold claim, considering the heat shield has been one of Starship's biggest challenges for years.

Musk says Flight 13's data and visual inspections convinced him the problem is solved.

But I'm not ready to celebrate yet.

SpaceX is still making unusual upgrades to the thermal protection system.

So, what exactly did SpaceX fix?

Why are they still upgrading the heat shield?

It's fair to say that Starship's recent flights have shown major improvements.

The Ship has consistently survived ascent, reentry, and splashdown, giving SpaceX something incredibly valuable: real flight data on the heat shield.

The improvement is obvious.

Tile breakage has been dramatically reduced, and oxidation problems also appear to have been addressed.

That's why Elon Musk has become increasingly confident about the system.

Most recently, Musk said during a live webcast that he considers the heat shield problem solved.
