Starship Flight 15 is finally Making a Ship Catch Possible
Flight 14 is over, but Starship is entering its next phase.
Now that we've seen what worked and what didn't, two questions matter:
When can Flight 15 happen, and is SpaceX ready to catch the Ship?
Let's find out on today's episode of Great SpaceX.
Before Flight 14, one question kept coming up:
Could Flight 15 be the flight where SpaceX finally catches the Ship?
Elon Musk had said that if Flight 14 produced favorable results, SpaceX could attempt a Ship catch on Flight 15.
His estimated probability was around 50 to 60 percent.
A booster catch wasn't specifically mentioned...
But it wasn't completely off the table either.
Then there was the schedule.
Starship Flight 15 is finally Making a Ship Catch Possible
A leaked FAA slide listed October 19th for Flight 15...
And October 31st for Flight 16, which was expected to involve the Florida launch site.
Even at the time, that schedule looked extremely aggressive.
I thought Flight 15 could still happen in October...
But October 19th seemed like a stretch.
Now Flight 14 is over.
So...
Did anything change?
And are those opportunities still realistic?
Let's start with what Flight 14 actually gave SpaceX.
The launch went well.
The Ship separated successfully.
Super Heavy completed its boostback and made a much more controlled splashdown than the previous two boosters.
And despite losing engines, the booster remained controllable through the critical phases of its return.
