AI GeneratedThe Detroit Lions are facing internal turmoil following a disappointing 41-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The team's defensive struggles have sparked discussions about potential coaching changes, specifically regarding Defensive Coordinator Calvin Shepard, as players and analysts call for immediate improvements before their next matchup.
Well, things are starting to get a little bit ugly in Detroit, and some seats in the
Lions locker room in the front office are starting to get a little bit hotter.
Big changes could be on the way for the Lions that could have some massive implications,
especially after that performance yesterday against the Buffalo Bills losing 41-31.
We're going to dive into all of that and a whole lot more on this edition of Lions Digest.

All right.
The game Thursday night, no two ways about it, ugly, especially on the defensive side
of the ball for the Lions.
I know they're short-handed.
I know it was a short week.
And I know Buffalo's loaded, but still, they had time to prep for this.
And the game plan obviously wasn't there for the Lions on the defensive side of the ball.
And the seat of Calvin Shepard, the defensive coordinator for the Lions, is probably a little
bit warmer now in Allen Park.
And things aren't quite so chummy and happy in that Lions locker room, especially after
the game yesterday.
Aidan Hutchinson, one of the leaders for the Lions, especially on the defensive side of
the ball.
You know, he was quoted in the locker room after the game, Dan and Shep, meaning Dan
Campbell and Calvin Shepard.
They will have to do what they've got to do.
The players, they know what they've got to do.
They've got to try to improve.
Things are bad right now.
Things have definitely got to change.
We've got to see some changes.
What does that entail?
Who knows?
Like he said, things are pretty bad, and that was bad yesterday for the Lions.
Now Jack Campbell, the captain of the Lions defense.
He took the brunt of it, as good captains do.
I like what he did, you know, taking the heat.
The running defense, we'll talk about it in a little bit, was putrid last night, or Thursday
night for the Lions against Buffalo.
He took the heat from it.
He said it's on him.
He's got to be better, and there's no other thing to do than look in the mirror and start
to get better.
Now I know the Lions got 10 days before the Jets to do that, but what kind of changes
are going to be made?
Some have to be made here for the Lions on the defensive side of the ball.
Look at Buffalo in the first half against the Lions yesterday.
10 plays, 65 yards touchdown.
8 plays, 79 yards.
You see it there.
9 plays.
4 plays.
I mean, they tore up the Lions defense in the first half.
Now it looked like they were reeling, still feeling the effects of what New Orleans did
in the second half of the first game, and that's unacceptable.
That again falls on the shoulders of Calvin Shepard, and Dan Campbell for that matter.
Look at the last 6 possessions for the Lions defense in that game against New Orleans.
Touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown.
And hey, if New Orleans would have had 10 more seconds with the ball against that Detroit
defense that looked gassed, you know, they had a 62-yard missed field goal.
Then, of course, the 10-play, 80-yard drive bore the Saints in that touchdown in overtime.
So the Lions, of course, dodged that bullet when the Saints went for 2 and didn't get it.
But it took a whole quarter for the Lions to snap out of it on the defensive side of
the ball, and they still gave up chunks of yardage against the run.
Now, we talked about it in our keys to the game.
The two keys, the major keys for the game contain Josh Allen, which they didn't do,
and contain the tight ends and the wideouts, which they didn't do.
So big changes need to be made.
And with that being said, going into the game yesterday, I knew that it was going to be
a high-scoring game.
And that's why I reminded everybody to trade yes on the total of the game being over 58-and-a-half,
and that's indeed what it was.
So if you did that and you followed my lead on the live pregame show, congratulations
if you traded yes on the over being 58-and-a-half.
And we did that with our brand-new partner here on Lions Digest, that being CalSheath.
Remember, you're trading directly against other users when you use CalSheath,
not the traditional sportsbook.
You're buying yes-or-no contracts on outcomes of events, games, politics, even the weather.
If you traded $25 in that over yesterday, you got back $52.50.
Why do you say $25?
Well, if you're interested in trying out CalSheath, use the link in the description and trade
$25 with the promo code DigestNFL, and you'll get $25 added to your account instantly.
The football games have started, and everything trades on CalSheath.
All right, I want to get back to what you think about.
Does Detroit need to make a change at defensive coordinator?
Am I pushing the panic button too early?
Yes, they need to make a change, just a flat-out no.
And relax, stop panicking.
It's only week two.
Well, I know they're not happy in the locker room, and that's a good thing.
And I know it's early.
I know it's just two weeks into the regular season.
I get it.
But really what alarms me, not only the pass defense.
Again, how they got gouged by that Buffalo rushing game.
And here's the stat right here that really stands out to me.
That is alarming.
James Cook had over 100 yards before contact, which means he got out into the open and got
100 yards before anybody in the defensive backfield or one of the linebackers touched him.
That means it started right up front.
Aiden Hutchinson played his heart out last night.
You could tell.
He gave everything out there.
He was gassed.
And I think Derek Barnes played halfway decent.
I think Campbell was a little bit too hard on himself.
But I'll tell you, Devin White, to me, was a no-show.
It was a borderline embarrassment out there.
And I thought Woonam got beat really bad on the defensive line.
And that's the alarming thing because that, to me, was the strong point of the Lions defense
coming into this one.
But Kirk Herbstreit said it best.
They got blown away on both sides, the offensive line and the defensive line.
And we can get into Larry Boreham, how badly he played as a replacement for Blake Miller.
And it makes me miss Blake Miller even more.
So hopefully he'll be back for that Jets game.
And like we said in the pregame yesterday, that you can catch a replay of it, by the
way, along with the postgame, which was very spirited.
I love the participation.
If this game would have been played on Sunday, I think Blake Miller would have played.
But he doesn't play defense.
And look at this rushing offense for Buffalo.
How about 36 carries, 203 yards.
James Cook averaged 6 point yards a pop.
21 rushes, 135 yards, 6 point yards, 6.4 yards an attempt.
And Josh Allen, 14 carries, 69 yards, 4.9.
So they rush for over five and a half yards a game against this Lions defense.
That's got to change.
You're not going to win too many games doing that.
Now, again, I understand it.
It's Josh Allen.
It's Buffalo.
They're loaded.
And we may look at this in about 10 weeks and say, wow, they are definitely head and
shoulders above everybody else.
And it's a tough turnaround in four days.
I get it.
Now, on the injury front, Evante Maddox was seen walking after the game on crutches.
Don't know what the injury status is with him.
To me, it looked like that was the only major injury.
Now, if you want a silver lining and you want some good news, Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch,
with it being week three starting next week, they're eligible to start practicing for the
Lions at the facility or whatever.
Take that for what it's worth.
And so that'll be nice to see them.
We'll be able to see the progress, see if either one of them can be available for week
five, along with Cade Mays on the offensive line.
That's huge news for the Lions.
You know, I kept saying maybe they'll wait until after the bye week before they come
back.
The way this defense is looking right now, we're going to especially need Kirby Joseph
and Brian Branch if they're healthy to get back in the lineup for that week five game
against the Arizona Cardinals.
No doubt about it.
All right, real quick.
Let's get back to our question.
Do you think the Lions need to make a change at D coordinator?
Yes or no?
Is it too early to tell?
Am I panicking?
Relax, whatever.
Let me know in the comments.
I would love to see it.
So again, take a deep breath.
The defense looked rough.
Changes have got to be made for the Lions.
There's just no getting there's just no two ways about it.
We'll see if those changes are made within the next 10 days.
Maybe a phone call.
Joey Porter Jr. in Pittsburgh.
Let's see if Brad Holmes can make that happen.
All right, that's going to do it for this edition of Lions Digest.
Again, a reminder to everybody.
If you haven't done it yet, we would love to have you hit that subscribe button and

Real quick, I want to thank everybody who participated in our post game show last night
after the game.
It was a therapy session event session.
We're going to do that after the next game against the New York Jets next Sunday.
Approximately what 445 five o'clock half hour show to let everybody vent their feelings
on the game.
Hopefully we can cheer a Lions victory.
But thank you to those that stayed up after the game and hopped on the response.
The viewership was amazing.
It was so much fun.
It helped me a little bit.
That's for sure.
All right, everybody.
That's going to do it.
Thank you again for taking time out to be with us.
However, you watched us around the world here on Lions Digest.
Until next time, Captain Lou saying keep your heads up.
Keep your sticks down.
Keep your feet moving.
And as always, keep your minds open.
So long.
