Lauterbrunnen Valley and Yungfrau Region High Altitud e Hike. Switzerland Day 6

Yesterday was our first full day in Wengen and we were very excited to get to see the Alpabzug, or in English the Cow Descent.

An Alpabzug is the traditional Swiss-German autumn event where farmers bring their cows and livestock down from high-altitude mountain pastures to their winter barns in the valleys.

The cows wear massive decorative bells and large flower crowns on their heads. The farmers guide them down the mountains in groups of 50 and as they make their way through the towns and villages, people line to streets to watch. You can hear the cowbells ringing miles away!

After the Cow Parade, we headed to explore the Lauterbrunnen Valley, a town that is at the bottom of a huge valley between massive mountain walls. Lauterbrunnen means "many springs", referring to all of the waterfalls that cascade down the valley walls.

After Lauterbrunnen, we headed back to Wengen and boarded a cable car up to the top of the mountain over looking the village where we took a 3.5 hour hike through the mountains. We were blessed with amazing views of the three mountains that tower over the Yungfrau region. The three mountains are the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau.

The area was also full of cows, so the symphony of cowbells played to our enjoyment as we huffed and huffed through this high altitude hike.
