What Penn State coach Matt Campbell is continuing to learn about his team
Sep 16, 2026
You look at our team on Saturday and, you know, special teams, offense and defense,
really that first quarter kind of got exposed in the not doing your job, right? And I think
sometimes when you're trying to make plays, you're trying to make things happen, you can get caught
up in not doing your job. And when we're playing really good in six of eight quarters, I'd say
we played really good football, that, man, we're just doing our job and what we're being asked to
do. And I think that's hard sometimes. Sometimes you got guys that are trying to do too much and,
man, it gets your hair off and it can't happen. And so, you know, who are those guys that are
disciplined enough to continue to do their job? I think, you know, I almost feel like every position
group's got some question marks of, man, where, who's separating themselves? How's it going to
continue to separate itself? Some guys are coming back from injury. Well, how do they help separate
themselves from the pack? I still think we're a team that's each week you're going to see guys
step up, maybe that weren't playing a lot or maybe make plays. And I just feel like almost
every position group, I mean, you can go across the board, you know, you're getting guys back,
you know, it's like, you know, I think you talked about the D-line, the rotation on that interior
D-line. I still think there's a lot of guys we still haven't seen Armstrong and Elijah
Carnell. And, you know, you talk about, you know, Dallas is kind of like Carson, you know, was injured
through the majority of camp and just kind of coming back into his own. At linebacker, you got
Tash coming back, you know, and, you know, we didn't get Cam Smith last week, so he was out last
week and he's questionable for this week if we can get him back, but he was playing great football.
Well, how's he come back? You know, I think when you look at the receiver room, you know, I still
think that room, you know, there's guys in that room that we think can help us, but how, when,
how much playing time do they get? What do they earn during the week of practice? The depth on
the O-line, I still think is a major question mark, in my opinion, you know, who's going to
emerge, who can help us as we continue to go forward? So, again, I said this about our team,
and I think that's part of just being a new team, right, is just you're going to have to work through
some of that early part of the season and kind of continue to see who shows up. And I think what I
was proudest of in the game, and I know I said it after the game, is our A players, the guys that are
proven to be great players. When our back was against the wall a little bit, it got kind of
dicey there for a second, they stepped up and made A plays. And that is, to me, I think when you're
seeing a team start to really grow forward, and then, you know, it's what gives you confidence
that, as I've said before, we're going to, man, we're going to play back quarter, we're going to
play a bad half, it's going to happen. And how you respond to that is indicative of the team
you become. So, you know, the negative is we had it, the positive is we responded to it, and now
how do you grow forward to understand those things can't happen again. So, that's a challenge to the
coaches and our, and obviously our players.
