The French Resistance: Underground Warfare in 1944 | Rare Original Footage

This remarkable archival film documents the liberation of France in September 1944 through the eyes of the French Resistance (Résistance), the French Forces of the Interior (FFI), and the advancing Allied armies. Filmed during the final months of the German occupation, it captures the determination of those who fought to restore France's freedom.
The film begins at a devastated railway station, where the destruction left behind by the retreating German forces is still visible. It then takes viewers inside a former prison, where investigators uncover evidence of atrocities committed during the occupation. The prison cells still bear the handprints of former prisoners, while demonstrations reveal the methods used to execute Resistance members. Funeral services and memorial ceremonies honor those who gave their lives in the struggle for liberation.
Among the highlights are rare scenes of General Charles de Gaulle attending the Allied victory parade on the Place de la Concorde in Paris, symbolizing the restoration of French sovereignty after four years of occupation.
A major portion of the film is dedicated to the activities of the French Resistance. Hidden printing presses produce underground newspapers and leaflets, clandestine couriers exchange secret messages concealed inside bicycles, and Resistance members distribute propaganda throughout occupied towns. The film also documents acts of sabotage against German communications, including the cutting of telephone lines and the dismantling of railway tracks to disrupt troop movements and supplies.
Several Resistance organizations appear in the footage, including the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), the Mouvement de Libération Nationale (MLN), and Ceux de la Libération (CDLR). The film follows their members from secret forest camps and weapons training to fierce street fighting alongside regular French and Allied forces during the liberation.
The aftermath of liberation is also documented: destroyed bridges and railway lines, the arrest of an alleged collaborator, hospitals treating wounded soldiers and Resistance fighters, reconstruction efforts, and Allied military parades celebrating victory.
Today, these original images provide a rare and authentic visual record of the French Resistance and the liberation of France during one of the decisive moments of the Second World War.
