Three products people muddle up
The rental company’s CDW — usually included, fat excess still on the voucher.
The broker’s “full cover” add-on — one box at checkout, that hire only.
Standalone excess reimbursement — annual or single-trip from a specialist. Cheaper if you hire more than once a year. You still leave a card hold; you claim the excess back. Do not let the desk be your first quote.
Who I skip: GoldCar frequently wins the comparison table. Loses at the counter — Super Relax, a four-figure hold, a queue built to make you pay to leave. If GoldCar is the only cheap row, I change supplier!
What I check before I pay
Free cancellation. Excess in writing. Depot location — not “airport” when it is a shuttle 20 minutes away. Fuel policy. Mileage. Credit card in the driver’s name with room for the hold. Photos on collection and return.
