Giessen to Dresden Drive – War's Devastation: Dresden 1945 and Parallels Today
From Giessen to Dresden on the long road to Ukraine. Today I reflect on one of the darkest chapters of World War II: the firebombing of Dresden in February 1945. A historic city turned to ash in three days—up to 25,000 civilians killed in the firestorm, entire neighbourhoods erased, refugees and families caught with nowhere to go.
As I walk through the rebuilt streets and see the Frauenkirche standing again, I can't help but draw the parallel to modern sieges like Mariupol in 2022—another European city reduced to rubble, thousands of ordinary lives lost, homes and hospitals destroyed in the name of military goals.
War doesn't change its face: it still turns beauty into ruin and people into statistics. That's why this drive matters to me—delivering a Toyota Hilux pickup via Car4Ukraine to the 82nd Assault Brigade in Pokrovsk. Upgraded with armour and mechanics, it will help evacuate wounded soldiers, move supplies, and give frontline teams one more tool to survive.
