As reported Ukrainian FP-1 drones struck a de-ethanization gas treatment unit at the Urengoy Condensate Treatment Plant in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The target is located more than 3,000 kilometers from Ukraine— the farthest facility hit since the start of the full-scale invasion. The plant, a Gazprom processing plant, is located 18 kilometers from Novy Urengoy. The strike disrupts the entire production chain—from gas condensate processing to polyethylene production.
The Ukrainian OSINT project "Kiberboroshno," which conducts geospatial intelligence, collects and analyzes open data, debunks Russian fakes, and analyzes the consequences of strikes on targets, reported details of the attack. According to the channel, this strike is fundamentally different from the preliminary attacks on oil refineries, as it is not an oil refining operation, but a gas processing plant—the first stage of converting unstable gas condensate into a marketable product.
The damaged unit processes gases released during condensate deethanization. These gases contain ethane, a key feedstock for the production of ethylene and polyethylene. From here, deethanization gases are supposed to be supplied to the Novy Urengoy Gas Chemical Complex, whose design capacity reaches up to 400,000 tons of low-density polyethylene per year. According to channel analysts, this accounts for approximately 10% of Russia's total polyethylene and polypropylene production capacity. The plant receives condensate from fields in the Nadym-Pur-Taz region, Russia's largest gas condensate basin, and its design capacity is approximately 19.5 million tons of feedstock per year. Failure of the deethanization gas treatment unit disrupts the entire chain from condensate to polyethylene. Without gas treatment, the supply of ethane to the NGCC is interrupted, thereby halting ethylene and finished polyethylene production. Even if the condensate deethanization units themselves continue to operate, there will be nowhere to feed the deethanization gas.The facility's history is worth noting. In August 2021, the UDC-1 condensate deethanization pre-unit burned down at the plant. Gazprom spent three years building a replacement—the new unit, with a capacity of 8 million tons per year, was officially launched in October 2024 with the direct participation of Gazprom Management Committee Chairman Alexey Miller. The cost of constructing the entire deethanization complex under the 2015 contract was 27.7 billion rubles.
Now, this facility is out of action again—this time not due to an accident, but to a strike by an FP-1 drone that traveled more than 3,000 kilometers. Novy Urengoy is of strategic importance to Russian energy, as the region is one of the country's main gas production centers, and any attacks on local infrastructure are particularly sensitive to the country's fuel and energy sector.
