Tristan chen Festival June 2026

Tristan Chen, who has been studying piano at WKMT since 2020 without interruption, gave a committed and expressive performance of two of Felix Mendelssohn’s *Songs Without Words*: Op. 67 No. 32 in F-sharp minor and Op. 53 No. 19 in A-flat major. His continuous dedication over the years deserves particular recognition, reflecting an admirable consistency in his musical studies and a genuine commitment to his development as a pianist.

Mendelssohn’s *Songs Without Words* demand much more than technical accuracy: their lyrical character requires the pianist to shape the melody with the natural phrasing and expressive freedom of a sung line, while maintaining balance and clarity within the accompanying textures. Tristan’s performance demonstrated the significant technical progress he has made throughout his years at WKMT, with increasing control, fluency and refinement at the keyboard. Particularly commendable was his growing attention to expression, phrasing and musical character, allowing the contrasting moods of the two works to emerge with sensitivity and confidence.

Tristan’s performance at our Annual Music Festival was therefore not only a presentation of these beautiful works by Mendelssohn, but also a reflection of the consistency, perseverance and musical maturity he has developed through more than six years of uninterrupted study at WKMT.
