A recent offshore earthquake near Humboldt County looked minor on paper — but it struck above one of the most complicated tectonic zones in North America.

On August 28, 2026, a magnitude 4.8–4.9 earthquake shook communities around Eureka and Petrolia. There was no major damage and no tsunami warning, but the quake renewed attention on the Mendocino Triple Junction, where multiple fault systems and tectonic plates collide beneath the Pacific.

We explore new research suggesting the region may contain at least five moving crustal fragments instead of the simple three-plate boundary shown on older maps, including the mysterious Pioneer Fragment and a piece of North American crust being pulled underground alongside the Gorda Plate.
