More than 300 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Navy operates one of its most unusual underwater research facilities—not along the coast, but beneath Lake Pend Oreille in the mountains of Idaho. Reaching approximately 1,150 feet deep, this quiet lake has become a massive natural laboratory for testing some of America’s most advanced submarine technology.

Beneath the surface are four major acoustic test ranges, 158 hydrophones, 36 underwater projectors and miles of fiber-optic cable. The Navy also operates Cutthroat—the world’s largest unmanned submarine model—powered by 1,680 batteries, alongside scaled models connected to the Virginia-class, Columbia-class and USS Zumwalt programs.

In this video, DiscoverTube investigates why the Navy selected this remote Idaho lake, how Ice Age glaciers created the perfect underwater testing environment and what engineers are learning from the mysterious vehicles moving through its depths.

🔍 In this video:
• Why the U.S. Navy tests submarines in landlocked Idaho
• The 1,150-foot-deep lake created by Ice Age glaciers
• The world’s largest unmanned submarine model
• 158 hydrophones hidden beneath the water
• Four secretive underwater acoustic ranges
• A 14-mile fiber-optic connection beneath the lake
• How the facility contributes to next-generation submarines
• What the Navy reveals—and what remains classified

Much of the facility is publicly known. But its most important results—including acoustic signatures, stealth improvements and the true capabilities of experimental technology—remain hidden. If this much has already been revealed, what is the U.S. Navy testing beneath Lake Pend Oreille that the public won’t learn about for years?
