Worried about water pipes freezing during the winter? In this video, I show you how we're using a self-regulating inline heating cable to provide freeze protection for water lines in the extreme cold of Manitoba, Canada.

Living in a cold climate means frozen water lines can become a serious problem. We've experienced it ourselves when a water line to our barn froze after the original heat trace failed. We ended up carrying buckets of water from the house to the animals until spring.

In this video, I'll show you the Yelo Deer inline heating cable, including how it works, how much power it uses, how we tested it, and how to install it inside a water line.

I also demonstrate a method for pulling the heating cable through an existing pipe using a vacuum, and explain some important considerations when installing it.

The 6-foot section I tested reached approximately 39.9°C and consumed about 14 watts during my test. The system is self-regulating, meaning its resistance changes as the cable heats up, reducing the amount of heating produced.

The cable is designed for different pipe applications and can be used with plastic and metal piping. I also discuss why measuring your installation beforehand is important and why keeping the run as straight as possible can make installation much easier.
