Boise State TE Matt Wagner breaks down his 4th-down TD catch vs. Oregon
Sep 10, 2026
Back to your touchdown, Maddock was saying you had a similar catch in practice last week.
You know, how familiar did that feel just kind of diving and getting that?
Yeah, it was like déjà vu, I'll tell you what. I mean, he joked about it in the press conference,
I saw it, but it was the exact same play to the different side. But even my celebration when I
scored it in practice was the exact same. So coming off to the sideline and kind of
see like replaying that in my head, I was like, wow, that felt really like I did it in practice.
So it just kind of goes back to show the like, how you practice how you're going to play and
that stuff does correlate to a game. So I practice hard every day. And that's what this team does.
It was great to see that correlate to the game in such a critical situation.
To be able to do it in such a critical moment, you know, fourth down,
you guys need this or you turn the ball or just how big did that boost you guys? Did you feel?
Oh, yeah, I felt like we, we obviously were in a little bit of a slump there. I mean,
they had 10 unanswered coming out of half. So I think it was a great opportunity as our
offense drove down the field, just took a step back and just realized that we just need to do
our job one play at a time. And we put together a really nice drive there and being able to execute
on fourth down, obviously, it's great. And like I said, like in the last press conference with you
guys, like I've always wanted to improve my dependability as a pass catcher, like in those
critical situations. So it was awesome to see that be able to pay off.
That kind of along those lines, like really your career kind of known as maybe like more the in-line tight end, right?
The run ball is a pass catcher. So as you get the opportunity to split out and line up with a slot there,
fourth and two, game on the line, second ranked team, defense around the road,
what is kind of going through your mind right there?
Yeah, honestly, like, I felt it when we said we're going for it on fourth down.
I saw the personnel that we had on the field. And I, I kind of knew the situation on the seven yard
line. Like I knew what the play was going to be like, and you could kind of feel that game flow.
And you hear Maddox say the formation, I didn't need to hear the rest of the play. I knew exactly
what play we're running. And right then and there, I knew I needed to go make a play.
The look they gave us actually, I wasn't the read for it. But ultimately, I just had to go out and
one on one versus number three, obviously in the slot, just being able to go out and win versus
man coverage, and give us a chance in that situation because they played a little differently
than what we what we thought they would do.
