Community mourns woman who died in Cape Breton floods
Sep 9, 2026
Shock and sadness is how many are feeling in the small community of Cleveland.
Forty-six-year-old Stephanie Como died on Saturday during a weather event that brought
major flooding to the area.
MLA Trevor Boudreaux, who knew Como, is speaking on behalf of the family.
The community is certainly rallying around the family and so I think it's going to take
time when something like this happens.
Indolences have been pouring in from friends and former colleagues.
Straight supplies posting in part her death will leave a gaping hole in the lives of all
who knew her.
Former employer Maritime Travel Port Hawkesbury sang,
May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her and to all who are grieving her
loss.
Boudreaux says she was very involved in her community.
Exactly what you expect in a Cape Retiner, right?
Good sense of humour, loves her family and her friends, loved photography, loved everything
about life traveling around Cape Retin and so I think, you know, one of the good ones.
RCMP initiated a search early Saturday morning after Como was reported missing.
Her vehicle was discovered parked near her residence on the far side of a flooded bridge.
Her body found a short distance away.
We're struggling with a lot of destruction of infrastructure, bridges, roads, people
cut off, power loss, but really all of that pales in comparison to the loss of life and
our hearts are just broken for her family.
Absolutely terrifying.
Three different counties in Cape Retin called a state of local emergency on Sunday, but
as of Wednesday, the declaration is only active in Richmond County.
To make sure that we have eyes on all of our infrastructure, our bridges, our roadways,
to make sure that that infrastructure is safe and that's what has really maintained the
state of local emergency.
For many in Cleveland, though, the focus is on Como's family and being there for a difficult time.
