A community is coming together to mourn a 14-year-old boy.
Police say Hunter Russe was chased down,
hit, and killed while riding his e-bike.
And now Russe's loved ones are working
to make sure his legacy will live on.
Fox 35's Larissa Leon live in Brevard County tonight with
what is just a truly heartbreaking story, Larissa.
Jack, absolutely heartbreaking.
But his aunt tells me that she made sure he
was loved at the very last moments of his life.
And it was pretty clear tonight from that vigil
that so many people loved Hunter.
He was just a beautiful child that was taken far too soon.
14-year-old Hunter Russe is remembered as a charismatic teen
who would always look out for others.
He would go out of his way to walk girls home
that didn't want to be walking alone,
even though they would live a mile away
from his house in the opposite direction.
Hunter was allegedly hit
and killed by convenience store owner Kayvon Patel.
Patel reportedly told police he thought
Hunter was breaking into the store,
and investigators say he never called 911 for help.
Police didn't find Hunter for at least an hour.
Patel is now held without bond on second-degree murder charges.
We reached out to his attorney for comment,
and we are waiting to hear back.
Now, his classmates and loved ones are grieving the young life lost.
It is difficult knowing that someone close to you has passed,
but as we move on, we know he's still here.
I was so mad, and I mean,
one mistake never should have cost him his life.
I love you, Hunter, so much, and you'll never be forgotten,
and I hope you rest easy, brother.
Hunter's mother passed away in 2016.
His aunt says one thought is bringing
her comfort through this heartbreak.
Knowing that when everything was said and done,
that he would be with my sister, and I feel he is.
Hunter's family tells me that they are donating his organs
so he can continue to save some lives.
They also say that he will be holding a vigil
in a memorial service this Saturday for family and close friends.
