We continue our series with mayoral candidates tonight.
We invited everyone running for mayor in Summerside
and Charlottetown to speak with us.
Tonight, meet the seven candidates running in Charlottetown.
Well, one of them to start.
CBC's Cody McKay introduces us to them alphabetically by last name.
So tonight, we begin with Philip Brown.
Philip Brown, city of Charlottetown,
candidate for mayor in the election of 2026.
What are at least two or three of the priorities that you see going
into this election that the city is facing right now?
Pressing issues.
Affordability is a big issue.
That's affordable housing.
That's for, and I am proposing that we look at our water
and wastewater rates,
that we freeze them for the next two years.
Right now, it's increased every year based on CPI.
I think we have to freeze them.
I'm looking at the subsidy that we provide
for our youth that are in sports,
that we augment that subsidy
because it hasn't been increased since 2002.
And I think another part of affordability
is the Charlottetown Farmers Market
where local residents can buy local goods produced by our farmers
or local farmers.
And I'm proposing that part of that fix
is we look at the Charlottetown Event Grounds
as a site for the new Charlottetown Farmers Market.
it's downtown it has access to the east
from the east downtown residents coming from the west so
all points converge on that site i think it's an opportunity
so it's an affordability issue
the other issue is the housing we're looking
at housing as you know over the last eight years
we've been focused on it why you you listed a whole myriad of issues
or things that you want
to tackle as mayor why are you philip brown
the person to do it i have the experience eight years
of eight years of experience as as mayor
of this city working not only with our city council the
two city councils but also building relationships
that's another important aspect or component of
the office that is building those relationships
with our provincial federal counterparts our
stakeholders in the community whether they
are business interests NGOs or the the the the
volunteer organizations that make this community work
so i have that experience and that's why
I believe that stability, continuity, steady,
strong leadership is very important for the next four years.
Just a reminder, there are some advance voting days coming up
for the municipal elections that are run by Elections PEI.
That first one is happening this Saturday, October 24th.
Election Day itself is Monday, November 2nd.
You can check where you vote
and when the polls are open on Elections PEI website.
Now, the province's website also has information for you
on the elections it runs outside of five municipalities.
That's the rest of the municipalities.
