Oh, this is going to be a special night. We have special guests. Dan and Shay are here to help us
celebrate. Plus local filmmaker I've known him got 15 years. Ray Martin is in studio. Okay. Hi,
Vince. Oh, hello. This is our one year anniversary. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you.
Sounded good. One year we've been doing this. Yeah, it seems like,
wow. Yeah. That's fine. The blink of an eye. All right. But it's really cool that Dan and
Shay agreed to be on the show tonight. Well, our first show, Rachel and Kelly and Oscar nominee
or something. Right. Not to be confused with Kelly and the other guy. Yeah. And the Delilah's
girls are here. Come on out. The look on your face. Now that aired the first week, didn't it?
When you went to learn how to be a stripper? Oh, yeah. Yeah. All right. Still work the pole from
time to time. All right. So the people who've been with us for a full year, thank you for
watching this show. We know who you are. People who have been with us for a full year died with
the TV on that first night. That's so true. We hope they find you soon. All right, let's do a
OK, so yesterday I went down to the lobby of my building and there was a guy there,
security guy who normally is only there on the weekdays. I said, what? Why are you here on a
Sunday? It's Monday. Yeah. I thought all day yesterday was Sunday. Is that why you didn't
come to work? Yes. As a matter of fact, is that why you called me at four o'clock? Where the hell
are you? So that's all funny, by the way. You are off. I was on the day off. But you got to feel
for head coach of the forty niners. They're down in Australia. Oh, that's right. He has no clue to
what day it is because the game is going to air Thursday night. No, Wednesday night, right? No.
Are they? I think Wednesday night is the remake or the read. Super Bowl Thursday night. OK,
it's funny who the 49ers playing the Rams in Australia. Yeah. Down under. So when we're
watching Thursday night, the game will be played in the morning Friday in Australia.
So he's all screwed up. Listen to him at a press conference. Like I said, we're a little confused
with when I look at my clock and it says the time and then I try to see my family's time.
It says the time, but it says yesterday. I don't get how that's possible. So I feel like I'm in
the future. And then also when we play on our Friday, which I think is a Thursday in the U.S.,
we're such creatures of habit. So I call today Tuesday. No, wait. So I call today Wednesday,
which is the first day we put in a game plan. But I think it's Monday. However, though, it's Sunday
and the president. So like I'm going to mess that up all week if you guys ask me. But today is just
our first day of the game plan, which is a Wednesday. We'll put in some on a Thursday.
Friday is the final part of the game plan. Saturday, we walk through when we play on Sunday,
which is a Friday in Australia and a Thursday in the U.S. So don't ever make me do that again.
What the hell did he just say? Well, he's clearly still recovering from that car accident.
Oh, my God. So I don't know if if the Eagles ever play and they will down in Australia,
do you think we would travel? Well, we being the Eagles fans. Oh, yeah. Well,
I think so, too. We had that one guy. Remember, we had the guy from Australia on his daughter
lives here now. Yes. And we zoomed with him back around the Super Bowl. And the Eagles actually
brought him in last season to have to go to a game. Wow. There is a guy. I listen to WIP.
You know, I'm starting to get up at four o'clock. They have a guy that calls in every
overnight from Australia. Wow. And he's he's going to a he's going to this game. That's
cool. Forty niners Rams. OK, next up. Do you know much about wombats? No, I don't either.
I do know that they're squatty little creatures. Are they with a big they have a small head,
but a big are they in Australia? Yeah, I'm pretty sure they want. I'm sorry. They have
small head, but a big butt. Oh, and well, you know what they say? What? Never trust a big
butt and smile. Who says that? Sir, mix a lot. Oh, that's right. I like my anaconda. Don't want
none. If it ain't got buns. Well, Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda.
Oh, God. So anyway, how do they fight off predators? They run into the they they burrow
holes, but they run in into the hole and turn their butts around so the predator can't get in
to get to the baby face down, booty up. Exactly. Here it is. Here's an attack that will run inside
its burrow and seal the entrance with its enormous butt. And if its babies are inside, the backside
basically becomes the door. That's because a wombat's rump is reinforced with thick cartilage
and has like no nerve endings. So predators struggle to bite through it. And even when they
do bite, the wombat doesn't feel. But if a predator does stick its head inside the burrow,
it's the last thing it'll ever do, because that's when the wombat will start twerking so hard,
it'll crush the predator to death. It can be twerked to death by a wombat. So the takeaway
here is if you've got young babies you need to protect. Yeah, I am available to wedge myself
in your front door and twerk to safety. What a service. Oh, God. See, I have no nerve endings
in there. You don't? You know, there'd be a lot more. I've sat on it too long. If we didn't have
nerve endings in the butt, there'd be a lot more of that action. You know what I mean? Sadly, I do.
Yeah. Did I tell you that when I went through that radiation for my prostate
and they shoved a balloon up there, I have no hair on my butt now and I never will again.
Not on the inside, but anyway. I had to go to the doctor that does that exam the other day
and he did that exam and when it was done, I said, man, I've been dreading this all day
and he kind of looked at me and said, but I guess it'd be funny if I said to you I've been
looking forward to this all day. I don't suppose he's been looking forward to it either. Are you
kidding? He loved it. Did he? Oh, yeah. All right, he's up there. Speaking of that area of your body,
how often do you change your underwear? Every day unless I have an accident twice a day.
I don't have accidents. Put up the graphic, please. Apparently one in five men will wear
their underwear all week long. Now, maybe in college I would have done that until it's about
to fall off, but not anymore. No, nobody wants that. You know that he does laundry every day.
Yeah, I do. And over the weekend, he replaced his toilet seat. Congratulations. Thank you.
I'm a man. You ever sat on a toilet seat that has that it's kind of spongy? Yes. Has the air in it?
Yeah, I don't think they do this as much anymore. Oh, shoot. Yeah.
Like I mentioned, this is a special night and Dan and Shay are actually on our show. Both of them?
Yes. We have to pick. I think they're sitting next to each other. Wow. We'll be right back.
Tonight on Mike.
You know, they're hit songs like Tequila and Speechless.
Dan and Shay are coming to our area, but first they join us tonight on Mike.
Well, I am speechless because Dan and Shay are on my show. This is awesome. Plus,
I'm drinking tequila. This is perfect. Welcome to Philly, Dan and Shay.
What's happening, Mike? We're drinking tequila as well. Awesome.
Well, it's 1130 at night. I'm from Pennsylvania, so it's good to be back home. Let's go.
Yeah, you're from out the western part of the state, right?
Yeah, I'm from outside of Pittsburgh. Wexford.
Wexford, PA. That's right. That's right. We love us in Philly, though, man. It's a good spot.
Good people. It's always like, don't tell anybody else we say this. It's always the
best show of the tour. Pops off. Why is that? I don't know, man. I feel like the northeast
just does country music right. I feel like, you know, I grew up going to Heinz Field to
see Kenny Chesney, and I know he plays at The Link in Philly. We got to play at The Link. We
actually opened for Kenny in 2021, and that was legit like the craziest show. People were fighting.
It was a whole vibe. I remember. It was lit, man. The tailgate scene was crazy, but big country
music. Shout out to the country radio station in Philly, man. Just good people playing good music.
That's one of the most popular radio stations in Philly, and I think it surprises people that
is a country station, but then didn't you also go to Carnegie Mellon out there in Allegheny County?
I did. I'm a nerd. I went to CMU. Absolutely. I haven't retained any of the knowledge,
as you can tell, and don't use any bit of my finance degree when we're out there trying to
write songs and play shows, but I did go to Carnegie Mellon. Spent a lot of my time in PA.
You wanted to play football too, didn't you? I played for a year. I've done a lot of crazy
things. We're listing off the stats. Played for a year, and I figured I probably wasn't
going to the NFL, so I was like, all right, let's double down and get the grades up.
So how do you guys decide what to open the show with? Would it be tequila,
or do you say that to the end? How do you decide? Yeah, this sounds like a conversation we just had.
Obviously, we've done a lot of tours at this point. Dan has handwritten every single song
that we've ever put out, and he cuts up into strips. So every song has a strip,
and we put that together, try to put together our set list so you can move them around.
And it's tough, man. You got to make sure that you're leaving something to be desired, but also
we've been putting that together. In the past, we've thought about doing something crazy like
about starting with tequila or something like that, but I think we'll probably always save
tequila for last so that people stay. But no, man, we're excited. This is going to be the
funnest tour we've ever done. I feel like we've tried at least to get better every single time
we've been on the road and make sure that we see what works and what doesn't work, and we try to
really refine our craft and make sure that our fans are spending their hard-earned money to
come out and see these shows. So we want to make sure that we're giving 200% of ourselves to be
able to really make it an amazing show and something fresh and new, while also doing exactly
what they want us to do. When they buy those tickets, we're definitely going to be playing
the hits and making sure we put on a fresh show. Well, speaking of fresh and new, congratulations
on the release of Young. Why Young? You even called the tour Young. Yeah, man, the album came
out, broke every record ever. No, I'm just kidding. Look out Taylor Swift. No, we're so proud of this
album, man. It's our most personal and most autobiographical album yet, and I feel like this
album is very, I would say, I don't know, mature. I feel like it's exactly where we are as mid-late
30s guys, and I think the juxtaposition of the word Young, when you think of that word, you're
like, oh, Dan and Shay made like a feel-good summertime album, and it's like, no, you listen
to the album and it's kind of heavy concepts. Say So, the lead single, is about a friend we lost
over a year ago to mental health, or a song like The Old Guys, it's about what you would do if your
spouse passed away before you. There's also like love songs and wedding songs on there, but it's
just a snapshot of real life, and I feel like, you know, real life has hit us in the last few years,
and we're being open and honest about that, and to put that album out, you know, you sucker them
in with the word Young, and they're like, I'm gonna check it out, and then it's like, you hear that
first, the title track, Young, which is a song about aging as a man. It's a message from our
future selves to our current and past selves, and I don't know, I just think it's, it's just,
I think us at our very best in the songwriting room, and man, this album just feels, it feels
so good that it's out in the world. I feel like it was stuff that we needed to get off our chests,
and it's just, man, I'm really proud of it. I think I'm more proud of these 10 songs than anything
we've ever put out in our career. I'm not just saying that either, because it's out, we're trying
to promote it, but I feel really good about it. You're gonna be playing at The Man, which is a
great, you know, half indoor, half outdoor theater. That's on October the 10th, so you better
get your tickets quickly on that one. How did you decide Dan and Shay instead of Shay and Dan?
You know, because Shay and Dan just kind of sounds dumb.
Well, it does now, yeah.
It was, people always would say, like, because, you know, we didn't have a band name when we were
first kind of going around and singing these songs, and everyone would just always say,
we'd show up at the, you know, at the labels or the publishing houses trying to get free food and
stuff whenever people were kind of, you know, trying to sign us, and they'd say, oh, Dan and
Shay is here again. They're here to drink our drinks. So it kind of stuck. Dan and Shay, we
didn't need to get too creative with our name. It was just, there's Dan and Shay coming in here
again trying to get us to take them out for free lunch. If there's any chance when you get here
in October, please come into the studio if you have time to come in and join us in studio. That'd
be awesome. Would love it, man. Would love it.
I love your vibe. I love the setup you got going on.
Oh, thank you. Do you like the color purple? The whole set is purple.
100%. Absolutely.
Thank you, guys. We'll see you in October.
Great talking to you, Mike. Appreciate it.
Coming right back.
Still coming to Christmas dinner?
I was shot by a guy I've known 15 years or more, filmmaker, actor, Ray Martin is here.
Ray, good to see you.
How you doing, sir?
Look at this dome, man.
Yeah, I missed the wave a little bit, but this is for a movie. You have to commit.
When you commit, you go full.
Well, let's talk about what we just saw there. That's Brick City Hustle.
Yes, sir.
What role do you play?
I play Sonny.
That's the main dude.
Main guy, yeah. So Brick City Hustle, Mike. So what was going on, I've done about 17 movies in
four years. Amazon Prime, but a lot of them are on Tubi. So it's either me or Burt Reynolds
are going to watch on Tubi. So I figured Burt was always good at that classic detective or classic,
you know, like Charles Bronson type death wish kind of feel. And I want to bring that. I want
to bring that to Philly with some like crimes a little darker than normally what I would normally
do. So it's about love. It's about loyalty. It's about second chances, right? But most importantly,
it's about, you know, a man, a good man, who gets pushed to the limit. And I don't know if
he can come back from it. And that's the movies really good stuff. Yeah.
Well, where'd you shoot it?
Westchester, Havertown and pepper Cheney Havertown grill. I live in Havertown,
try to try to stay local. And we also shot at the Radnor Hotel and the Wayne Hotel.
Okay, so remind me of where were you born and raised?
So born and raised in Philly, went to Ryan, and then landed the TV show Ed on NBC.
Now, how many years ago was I remember watching Ed? How many years ago was that?
That was about 20. I've been married to my wife, Andrea, for 21 years.
Hey, Andrea. So yeah, about 22 years ago.
But then, and you wanted to do other acting gigs.
Yeah, yeah. So I came home, I started the country's first all green chauffeur service.
And I missed acting. And I said to my wife, I'm like, wonder if we can incorporate the two.
But you had to come back. Was that because your mom?
Yeah, my mom passed away of cancer. Yeah. Yeah. Colon cancer.
You want to take care of her?
I want to take care of her and she passed. And, and yeah, I didn't feel like it was the right
time to go back because her and my dad were together since eighth grade. And I'm an only
child. So she really needed, they both needed. So you decided, I'm just going to make my own
Yes.
How do you do it?
I got lucky. I got lucky. I got Norn from Cheers to play my dad in the very first one.
Yes. What was the name of that one?
Stealing a Survivor. And we got Jason Kelsey to make an appearance before he was
as famous as he is now.
Jason Kelsey.
Yeah. Yeah. Which we have a movie I'd love to tell you about in a second about that. But yeah,
so then we stole Smalls from the kidnap or we kidnapped Smalls. I apologize.
Yeah. From Sandlot.
From Sandlot. Yeah.
I remember that because of the all-star game. Remember the all-star game? They had the boys
ride out on their bicycles and the girls. And I thought of you the minute I was,
I was watching this live. I thought of you, you actually got the guy that played Smalls
in the Sandlot to be in one of your movies.
Yeah. So me and some guys from Goodfellas and Bronx Tale all kidnapped Smalls. It's
called Killing Smalls, but it's spelled differently because I didn't want to get sued.
Yeah. K-I-L-L-I-N and then Smalls with a Z. So that's what we really do. We do a lot of fun
schticky kind of humor, Dom Deluise, that kind of Don Rickles kind of humor. But Brick is our
first, well, actually it's our second. We did 23rd Street, which is about a little boy who
sees his mom and dad get murdered on Christmas Eve.
So Tale is old as time.
Yeah, old as time. It's like, it's a wonderful life. Comes back 40 years later for redemption
to the neighborhood. So I kind of got down that crime trauma again, because if you can't beat
them, join them. So it's me, Charles Bronson, and Burt Reynolds and Alan Tooby that you can just find.
Yeah, but you've outlived them both.
And none of them committed this fool, I don't think, the shave in the head.
You're such a nice guy. How many kids now?
I have three kids, Brody, Nola, and Stella.
Still married, 21 years. We're about to celebrate next year. We're legal to drink.
You've got this thing about you. You like crime and somebody dies in all your movies.
They do.
Except the Smalls thing, nobody died.
Nobody died in Smalls. No, we just kidnapped him. We just kidnapped him. But speaking of
kidnapping, yeah. Well, speaking of all of them kind of together, I have a movie we're filming
right now. We start next week, actually. It's called Unks. And I think it's going to be a
Philadelphia movie that will last a test of time.
Unks. Unks is a bar?
It's a bar where these five best friends, my best friends are always really in the movie. So it's
Joe, Damon, my cousin Jimmy, my best friend Rob. But we're all in all these movies. So we all go
to the same bar, Unks. And we love him like an uncle, of course. And he's going to lose the bar
to the mob because he keeps gambling every week and he keeps losing.
Let me guess. You kill him.
We don't kill him. But he comes up with an idea. $3,000 for the best birds costume on Christmas
Eve.
Eagles.
Eagles, yes. So he says, guys, come and help me set up. So when we get there, he's dead.
I know somebody was going to die.
He's dead. But it was a heart attack. And I decide, hey, we're going to weekend at Bernie's
them. So we weekend at Bernie's them. We prop them up. Within 10 minutes, everybody comes and
we lose them. And everybody realizes he's dead. So six months later, we find out that he left us
the bar. And the guy said to me, Ray, wasn't Jason Kelce in your first movie? And I said,
yeah, he was. And they say, well, you know what? Let's go knock on his door and ask him to do his
podcast. And I go, you're psychos. We can't go knock on his door. I haven't seen him in five
years. That's the second half of the movie. So the whole rest of the movie, we're trying to find
Kelce. I'm thinking next September, because we're going to do some Eagles games. We got Brandon
Graham, who just retired today. We got his company. He partnered up with Ryan Howard with a,
I think it's called Crooked Pop, I believe.
It's a tea.
Yes. They're going to be one of our sponsors. So we're looking for Philadelphia to really get
behind this project. Maybe Wawa, Tasty Cake, and go full-fledged.
Keep going. Keep going.
God bless you guys. Appreciate it. And you're a great co-host, by the way.
Oh, thank you. Should have said that higher up.
Okay. Midnight Snack. What happened? Because it's our one-year anniversary,
they gave us something good?
Well, they could have gotten us a cake.
Yeah. Yeah. Where's the cake?
Or a Delilah's doll.
Coming out of the cake.
Okay. Now, what does that say?
This is apple pie a la mode.
In a cookie.
Now, how are they getting the ice cream in there?
I'll be the judge of that. Smells happily.
Okay.
It's kind of beige inside. I'm going to go like this.
I don't just like it, but it's got kind of a...
I'm telling you, a scale of 1 to 12.
I'm going 4.
Yeah. I might do a 5. You can really taste the apples.
But it's not like a... Anyway.
I don't know. We'll see you later. Thanks for watching.
It's not... It's very artificial tasting, so I want to finish it.
Yeah.
