Indonesia is facing widespread volcanic disruption after six volcanoes erupted within the same day, with activity stretching across the archipelago from North Maluku to North Sumatra. The eruptions involved Ibu, Semeru, Lewotobi, Ili Lewotolok, Anak Krakatau and Sinabung, raising questions about whether the unusual timing could be connected.

Indonesia’s volcanology authorities say there is currently no evidence that the six eruptions were caused by a single underground process. Each volcano has its own magma system, and simultaneous activity does not mean one eruption triggered another.

The most significant disruption developed around Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. Continued eruptions sent volcanic ash into airspace used by flights serving Jakarta, forcing operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to stop. By Sunday afternoon, 712 flights had been affected and eight airports had suspended operations, disrupting domestic and international routes. Around 150,000 passengers were caught up in the closures.

Volcanic ash also reached communities along the Banten coast, while authorities advised residents to wear masks and schools in Jakarta moved to remote learning. Officials reported no casualties from the Anak Krakatau eruption and said there was no current tsunami threat.
Elsewhere, Mount Sinabung produced an ash column around 3.5 kilometres above its summit, prompting the evacuation of 615 residents. Semeru, Ibu and Ili Lewotolok also produced eruptions and ash emissions during the wider period of activity.
