Where Did the Water in the Nepal–Tibet Mega Flood Come From?

A mountain of rock and glacier ice collapsed high in the Himalayas. Soon afterward, a destructive debris-rich flood surged through the river system below.

But where did all that liquid water actually come from?

A collapsing glacier is not simply a giant tank of water. Much of the material moving down the mountain was still solid rock, ice, snow, and debris.

In this documentary, we follow the water through the Nepal–Tibet mountain watershed to reconstruct how the flood may have been assembled.

We examine the water that was already flowing through the river system, the contribution from melting ice and snow, the possibility that avalanche debris temporarily restricted the river and stored water upstream, the effect of rapid release, downstream tributaries, and the enormous amount of sediment, rock, timber, and debris entrained by the moving flow.
