evere flooding in Fujian, China, followed days of extreme rainfall linked to Typhoon Saudel, with rivers rising above warning levels and communities inundated across the province. In Putian, an embankment failure sent floodwater into villages and an industrial area after more than 400 millimetres of rain fell across Thursday and Friday.

More than 83,000 people were evacuated from risk areas across Fujian before the worst conditions arrived. Officials confirmed people were missing, more than 1,200 people were rescued in Putian, and more than 100 houses were reported collapsed.

Saudel had already made two landfalls before strengthening again over the South China Sea and coming ashore in Fujian for a third time. Even as the system weakened over land, its slow-moving circulation continued producing intense rainfall over mountainous terrain, while authorities warned that saturated slopes could increase the risk of landslides.
